Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to examine companies in the bottomweights market who have identified niche productsD arkets for use in testing the Parrish Niche Strategy Model (2003). Another purpose of this research study was to analyze factors that contribute to the establishment of niche marketing strategies within the bottomweights market, as well as issues that arise when implementing a niche strategy. The conceptual model for this research is the Parrish Niche Strategy Model (2003). The Parrish Niche Strategy Model (2003) is the only niche model that is specific to the textile and apparel industries. This model encompasses the sectors within the textile complex (fiber and yarn producers, mill producers, sewn goods producers, and auxiliary companies) and identifies two approaches to a niche strategy: product (push marketing) and market (pull marketing). The Parrish Niche Strategy Model (2003) was developed utilizing trade theories that predict specialization as a result of trade. In addition, Parrish utilized Porter's (1980) Generic Competitive Strategies -- Differentiation Strategy -- in developing the Parrish Niche Strategy Model (2003). One aspect of Porter's premise is that a differentiation strategy serves as a way to increase competitiveness. This research used a two-phase methodology. The first phase was exploratory in nature and identified niche bottomweight markets and companies competing in these markets with niche bottomweight products. Secondary data were used conduct competitive analyses on the companies to develop an understanding of the current state of the companies and to assess current strategies used by the companies. The second phase of the research used a concurrent triangulation strategy to gather primary qualitative and quantitative data through an interview methodology. The interview was conducted using a researcher developed interview instrument which focused on five areas: current state of the company, factors that inf.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to analyze how a niche strategy can be used by US textile and apparel companies to compete with lower priced imports. With the increasing globalization of the industry, it has been suggested that companies focus on products that offer a competitive advantage over commodity products (Standard and Poor's, 2003). One way of doing this is to focus on specialized, or niche, products. The conceptual models used in this study provided a framework for specialization within trade. The trade theories examined were 1) Ricardo's Comparative Advantage Theory (Ricardo, 1817), 2) Heckscher-Ohlin Trade Theory of Factor Proportions (Heckscher & Ohlin, 1991), 3) Posner's Technology Trade Gap Theory (Posner, 1961), 4) Vernon's Theory of the Product Life Cycle of Trade (Vernon, 1966), and 5) Porter's Model of Competitive Advantage (Porter, 1998). Each of these trade theories predicts specialization as a result of trade. This means that as trade barriers decrease, a country's resources will focus on those processes in which it has a competitive advantage. For the US textile and apparel industry, this means moving away from basic textile items used in apparel production, such as basic fabrics, and moving towards more focused and specialty products, which includes niche products. The methodology used in this study consisted of two phases. Phase I used a deductive research design with an aim to clarify niche strategy issues and provide breadth on the topic (quantitative data). The instrument utilized in this phase was an online survey, which was developed by the researcher and contained three sections: company information, niche markets and globalization. Because of the limited literature on niche markets, the survey was used to obtain information to develop Phase II of the study. The initial sample for Phase I was made up of 63 companies from five sectors in the US textile and apparel industry. These were fiber and yarn producers, mill producers, sewn good.

Book excerpt: This book analyzes the dramatic social impacts of global economic restructuring in the US textile industry and the consequences for Southern textile mill communities. With the expansion of markets in the global economy, government policies such as NAFTA and GATT are greatly affecting the domestic production of textiles. Increased global competitiveness has led to technological modernization, plant shutdowns, and downward pressure on wages. Many family-owned companies are merging into conglomerates, some of which are international. Concurrently, the structure of power and domination in Southern textile communities is changing. Paternalistic control, typically portrayed as a form of traditional authority and benevolent protection of workers, is no longer dominant. With the decreased need for skilled labor, textile company owners are not obligated to provide mill villages with housing electricity, and water. Formerly protected communities are now players on an international scale, with workers competing for jobs on a global level. New forms of class exploitation, racism, and sexism provide a contested terrain for mill employees. As the industry restructures, workers and their households are faced with new challenges. To understand these social impacts, I examine globalization, restructuring, and spatialization as processes embedded in multiple layers of reality. The multi-level analysis focuses on the Southern textile industry, a leading firm, its surrounding labor market area, and members of the community. Historical, statistical and qualitative interviewing methods yield data that demonstrate redefined labor markets, reconstituted race relations, and household adaptations. Changes in firm and industry impact shop-floor labor processes, including increased production pace, new management strategies and technological adjustments. As embedded layers of social relations, the multi-level outcomes are both negative and positive, creating new winners and losers in Southern communities.

Book excerpt: This book of essays, which draws on the expertise of leading textile scholars in Britain and the United States, focuses on the problem of and responses to foreign competition in textiles from the late nineteenth century to the present day. A short introductory essay by the editor is followed by a survey of the debates surrounding the British cotton industry, foreign competition and competitive advantage. The other essays consider various aspects of that competition, including textile machine-making, Lancashire perceptions of the rise of Japan during the inter-war period and responses to foreign competition in the British cotton industry since 1945, whilst others deal with the decline and rise of merchanting in UK textiles and European competition in woollen yarn and cloth from 1870 to 1914. A recurring theme in a number of the essays is Japanese competitive advantage in textiles. The book is unique since although there are numerous books dealing with the problems of British staple industries, none focuses primarily on the issue of competition, its sources and responses, nor on textiles in general rather than a single industry. Moreover, since the scope is international rather than limited only to the UK, it follows recent trends in British busines history away from single company case studies towards a more thematic, comparative approach. In addition, the international authorship of these papers gives this book, first published in 1991, wide appeal.

Book excerpt: The textile manufacturing industry (NAfICS 313) has played an important role in the history of the United States and continues to be a major industrial employer, not only in the US, but also around the world. Textiles are mainly considered a component part of the supply chain, with end uses ranging from apparel to home textiles to industrial goods to medical textiles. Even though apparel is the largest end use of textiles and has increasingly moved offshore to low-cost labor countries, there remains a growing textile manufacturing industry in the US for capital and technology-intensive products, such as nonwovens and those with military end uses.

What shapes the decisions of importers in these markets to purchase inputs from a more costly supplier? Current theories highlight the role of the market or firm strategy as possible explanations. It’s Not Just the Economy, Stupid! Trade Competitiveness in the 21st Century relies on 12 years of research of the US textile industry and the apparel industry throughout the Latin American and Caribbean regions to provide an alternative answer to these questions. The book argues that market factors and business strategies alone do not determine industry competitiveness and firm import behavior. Rather, special international trade programs and regulated trade agreements, which are commonly described as free trade agreements, make it possible for an industry that is less competitive in the global market to become highly competitive in specific markets. Furthermore, these same international trade programs and agreements create incentives for importers to purchase inputs from specific markets, including those with higher costs. For example, the US textile industry is less cost competitive than the same industry in a number of other countries, such as China. Although less expensive textile suppliers exist, some Latin American and Caribbean countries continue to import a majority of their textiles from the United States for use in their garment exports. The book shows that this particular trend results from special trade programs and regulated trade agreements. The findings presented here complement existing scholarship on international trade by focusing on the behavior of importers rather than exporters. Furthermore, whereas current studies explain how industries compete in the global market, the book shifts the emphasis toward industry competitiveness in specific markets.

Book excerpt: The only comprehensive historical analysis of the globalization of the U.S. apparel industry, this book focuses on the reemergence of sweatshops in the United States and the growth of new ones abroad. Ellen Israel Rosen, who has spent more than a decade investigating the problems of America's domestic apparel workers, now probes the shifts in trade policy and global economics that have spawned momentous changes in the international apparel and textile trade. Making Sweatshops asks whether the process of globalization can be promoted in ways that blend industrialization and economic development in both poor and rich countries with concerns for social and economic justice—especially for the women who toil in the industry's low-wage sites around the world. Rosen looks closely at the role trade policy has played in globalization in this industry. She traces the history of current policies toward the textile and apparel trade to cold war politics and the reconstruction of the Pacific Rim economies after World War II. Her narrative takes us through the rise of protectionism and the subsequent dismantling of trade protection during the Reagan era to the passage of NAFTA and the continued push for trade accords through the WTO. Going beyond purely economic factors, this valuable study elaborates the full historical and political context in which the globalization of textiles and apparel has taken place. Rosen takes a critical look at the promises of prosperity, both in the U.S. and in developing countries, made by advocates for the global expansion of these industries. She offers evidence to suggest that this process may inevitably create new and more extreme forms of poverty.
