This book was released on 2004 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By providing highly realistic simulations of sound propagation through complex atmospheric and terrain environments, finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) techniques can potentially reduce development time and improve the battlefield performance of acoustic sensors. In this paper, we summarize recent progress in improving two key aspects of acoustic FDTD calculations for the atmosphere: (1) development of a rigorous implementation of sound propagation in a moving, inhomogeneous fluid, and (2) formulation and numerical implementation of time domain methods for handling sound interactions with partially reflecting ground surfaces. The new techniques are illustrated with highly detailed calculations of sound propagation through simulated, dynamic atmospheric turbulence fields and over a porous ground surface with viscous and thermal relaxation mechanisms.

Book Synopsis An Electromagnetic Finite Difference Time Domain Analog Treatment of Small Signal Acoustic Interactions by :
Download or read book An Electromagnetic Finite Difference Time Domain Analog Treatment of Small Signal Acoustic Interactions written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hyperbolic partial differential equations encompass an extremely important set of physical phenomena including electromagnetics and acoustics. Small amplitude acoustic interactions behave much the same as electromagnetic interactions for longitudinal acoustic waves because of the similar nature of the governing hyperbolic equations. Differences appear when transverse acoustic waves are considered, nonetheless the strong analogy between the acoustic and electromagnetic phenomena prompted the development of a Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) acoustic analog to the existing electromagnetic FDTD technique. The advantage of an acoustic FDTD (AFDTD) code are as follows: (1) Boundary condition-free treatment of the acoustic scatterer -- only the intrinsic properties of the scatterer's material are needed, no shell treatment or other set of special equations describing the macroscopic behavior of a sheet of material or a junction, etc. are required; this allows completely general geometries and materials in the model. (2) Advanced outer radiation boundary condition analogs -- in the electromagnetics arena, highly absorbing outer radiation boundary conditions have been developed that can be applied with little modification to the acoustics arena with equal success. (3) A suite of preexisting capabilities related to electromagnetic modeling -- this includes automated model generation and interaction visualization as its most important components and is best exemplified by the capabilities of the LLNL generated TSAR electromagnetic FDTD code.

This book was released on 2011-03-29 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys recent developments in numerical techniques for global atmospheric models. It is based upon a collection of lectures prepared by leading experts in the field. The chapters reveal the multitude of steps that determine the global atmospheric model design. They encompass the choice of the equation set, computational grids on the sphere, horizontal and vertical discretizations, time integration methods, filtering and diffusion mechanisms, conservation properties, tracer transport, and considerations for designing models for massively parallel computers. A reader interested in applied numerical methods but also the many facets of atmospheric modeling should find this book of particular relevance.
Book Synopsis Numerical Methods for Fluid Dynamics by : Dale R. Durran
Download or read book Numerical Methods for Fluid Dynamics written by Dale R. Durran and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-14 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This scholarly text provides an introduction to the numerical methods used to model partial differential equations, with focus on atmospheric and oceanic flows. The book covers both the essentials of building a numerical model and the more sophisticated techniques that are now available. Finite difference methods, spectral methods, finite element method, flux-corrected methods and TVC schemes are all discussed. Throughout, the author keeps to a middle ground between the theorem-proof formalism of a mathematical text and the highly empirical approach found in some engineering publications. The book establishes a concrete link between theory and practice using an extensive range of test problems to illustrate the theoretically derived properties of various methods. From the reviews: "...the books unquestionable advantage is the clarity and simplicity in presenting virtually all basic ideas and methods of numerical analysis currently actively used in geophysical fluid dynamics."
