Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the use of journal writing to improve math comprehension. More specifically, determining what effect journal writing had on the conceptual understanding, adaptive reasoning, and productive disposition of four struggling fifth and sixth grade students in mathematics. Students wrote journal entries using a five step journal problem process which were examined by their two teachers. Teacher observation, discussion, and a self-designed survey were also employed to gain a better understanding of the student's disposition towards communicating in mathematics. It was hypothesized that utilizing journal writing in mathematics allows all students to share their thinking and justify their results. The researcher concluded that giving students the chance to explain their thinking through the use of journal prompts in mathematics allowed struggling learners to more effectively demonstrate their knowledge. The journals also helped teachers assess individual student's progress and tailor interventions where needed.
