This book was released on 1986 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes a model of the determination of the official and unofficial (parallel) exchange rates for a situation in which there is (potentially) a demand to hold foreign currency and in which holdings of the foreign currency cannot be freely altered by trade at the offical exchange rate (with the central bank). Instead, the existing stock of foreign currency is traded at the unoffical exchange rate and alterations in the existing stock come about only through a costly smuggling activity. The model is nonstochastic. It is a model of a small country- in the sense that foreign prices and interest rates are taken as given- that is inhabited by overlapping generations. No restrictions are imposed on international trade in goods and a special form of exchange rate flexibility is assumed. The model is particularly helpful in isolating different sources for the existence of black markets for foreign currences. It does shed some light on the welfare implications of domestic currency convertibility (when trade restrictions are not significant).

Book Synopsis Currency and Coercion by : Jonathan Kirshner
Download or read book Currency and Coercion written by Jonathan Kirshner and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Kirshner here examines how states can and have used international currency relationships and arrangements as instruments of coercive power for the advancement of state security. Kirshner lays the groundwork for the study of what he calls monetary power by providing a taxonomy of the forms that such power can take and of the conditions under which it can have effect. He then establishes the actual existence of monetary power by showing how the taxonomy is supported by the historical record, including cases from nations from all over the globe and throughout the twentieth century. He uncovers how monetary power is affected by different monetary regimes, the sources of its success and failure, and the factors that lead states to turn to its use. Kirshner thus succeeds in developing a generalized framework for the analysis of an important yet neglected form of state power that is likely to be of increasing importance in the post-Cold War era. Although some distinguished scholars have touched on the issue of monetary power, there has been until now no standard text on the subject. Integrating security studies and international political economy, this book is a timely synthesis that will be important to the entire discipline of international relations.

Download or read book Middle East and Europe written by B. A. Roberson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-06-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading commentators on Europe and the Middle East explore many of the key issues which have informed the relationship between the two regions. Ranging from Europe's colonial legacies to an uncertain economic future in the region the book covers: * the Cold War and after * the profound influence of the US * the rise of political Islam * case studies including Europe and the Iranian revolution, France's experiences in Algeria, and Turkey's position between the two regions. The EU, it is argued, has more influence over economic strategies than security issues in the Middle East. These strategies have in turn promoted stability in the form of free trade zones, ensuring vital economic development between the Middle East and Europe.
