According to 'research findings, it was concluded that the reason for teenage pregnancy varies from school to school and from place to place within the same state. Factors that are associated with teenage pregnancy include rapid urbanization, low socioeconomic status, low educational and career aspiration, residence in a single parent home and poor family relationship. The study further found that teenage pregnancy has a detrimental effect on the education and future plans of teenagers Therefore, it was recommended among others that. Teenage programmes should be tailored to the needs of individual communities and include health promotion information and advice, especially on risk taking behaviors. Federal and state governments can contribute in the effort to reduce teenage pregnancy by providing stable funding for comprehensive educational and support services to pregnant and parenting teenagers and parents should not be too harsh on teenagers but they should be approachable so that the children can confide in them whenever there is a pressure from peers. Finally, teenagers should be enlightened about the consequence of engaging in sex at the early stage of their lives and parents should stand at best to meet the needs of the teenage child.

Book excerpt: Diploma Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Sociology - Children and Youth, , course: Diploma in Social Work, language: English, abstract: Although considerable attention has been paid to the prevalence of adolescence childbearing in Kenya today, few studies have focused on the educational consequences of the schoolgirl pregnancy. Using data collected in selected schools in Embu Municipality, this study examines the factors associated with schoolgirl pregnancy as well as the likelihood of school dropout and subsequent re‐enrollment of schoolgirls who become pregnant. The analysis is derived from the data collected from secondary schoolgirls, education officials and teachers on factors that predispose girls to pregnancy, the extent to which teenage pregnancy contributes to school dropout and the eventual levels of re‐admission. The data analysis shows that girls in secondary schools are actually already sexually active though they lack the relevant information to help them make the right choices as far as their sexuality is concerned. The little information that they have is not conclusive and it is evident that they yearn for information which would be useful for them. Policy on re‐admission has been formulated but the extent to which it is applied is still a questionable issue. A lot of gaps also exist in record keeping of the girls who become pregnant while in school and what becomes of them when they dropout. Such records would be vital in determining for sure if these girls become pregnant before dropping out of school or otherwise and subsequently tracking them down for re‐admission purposes. A question is then raised on what other factors would be causing these girls to drop out of school other than just the pregnancy. However, poverty, cultural practices and peer pressure are among the factors assumed to be predisposing girls to pregnancy from the findings of this study, while these factors in themselves would also cause dropouts. Given the increasing levels of female school participation in Kenya today through the affirmative action motion targeting the girl child, the findings of this study suggest that future studies will benefit from exploring the causal relationships between the factors mentioned above, adolescent reproductive health behavior and subsequent school attendance.

Book excerpt: The Subcommittee on Human Resources and Intergovernmental Relations of the House of Representatives Committee on Government Reform and Oversight met to consider the causes of and solutions to teen pregnancy and the role of community organizations in prevention efforts. Opening remarks by Representative Christopher Shays were followed by statements by a number of people with expertise in teen pregnancy prevention, beginning with the statement of Representative Edolphus Towns, which emphasizes that in many cases the fathers of the babies of teenage girls are much older than the mothers. Statements of Representatives Nancy Johnson and Eva M. Clayton further defined the problem and emphasized that solutions must be community based. Remarks and a panel discussion were presented by: (1) Henry W. Foster, Jr., Senior Advisor to the President; (2) Kristin A. Moore, from the National Campaign To Prevent Teen Pregnancy; (3) Pat Funderburk Ware, former director of the Office of Adolescent Pregnancy Programs; and (4) Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Lieutenant Governor of Maryland. The panel discussion of these representatives of national initiatives was followed by a panel discussion of representatives from Best Friends, a program for girls and young women, and the Institute for Responsible Fatherhood and Family Revitalization. The transcribed comments and prepared statements of members of both panels are supplemented by letters, statements, and other documents submitted for the record. Panelists and Congress members were in general agreement that community-based approaches are needed to address the problems of teen pregnancy and that the role of fathers must be strengthened. (SLD)

Book excerpt: Teenage pregnancy rates continue to be alarming despite the fact that education about access to birth control is more prevalent than at anytime in history. Adolescent pregnancy and parenthood continue to be a major public and health professional concern because of the potentially adverse consequences of these conditions for individuals, families and society. It is the major contributor to the alarming increase rates in birth, maternal death and morbidity rates. In Africa 24-40%, of all women have their first child before the age of 18 years and up to 40% of all children are unwanted at birth. While in Zambia previous studies have shown that one third of the adolescents became pregnant by the age of 17 years. The main objectives of the study were to explore the factors contributing to an increased rate of teenage pregnancies among high school girls in Mufulira, Zambia and also to establish the teenagers' opinions regarding teenage pregnancy.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2019 in the subject Sociology - Gender Studies, grade: 3, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (EDUCATION), course: GCE 816, language: English, abstract: This study examines the sexual behaviour of adolescents and youths in Anambra State, Nigeria, and tries to give guidance on how the social and health risks that might come about from such action can be treated. Sexual behaviour of adolescents and youth are categorized as one of the main health priorities of a society because of high prevalence of HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted Infections. This paper focused on school counselling strategies for resolving disciplinary problems in Nigerian public secondary schools. Students’ disciplinary problems are growing at alarming rate prompting the need for effective strategies for curbing them. Two theories were used in this study, the Gender Schema Theory and Theory of Planned Behavior to explain sex before marriage. Based on the findings it was concluded that sex before marriage is now part of social life of students, Therefore it was recommended that early sex education and campaigsn should be given to children to create awareness on sex before marriage. Those should be carried out by the parents, government and general public to reduce the rate of premarital sex among students in tertiary institutions in Anambra State.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In pre-industrial societies, people moved from childhood to adulthood directly, getting married and going to work early in life. Although this still holds true for many cultures, in countries such as the USA or Japan, adolescence has become a specific stage of life, where young people are cultural trendsetters and market drivers. The International Encyclopedia of Adolescence is an exhaustive socio-cultural survey of young people around the world. The focus is cultural and historical, and the work offers a rarely found worldwide perspective. Entries are compiled by experts from many fields of study, including anthropology, history, psychology, and sociology. Unlike existing works, the Encyclopedia does not stress biological or psycho-pathological issues. It addresses myths and realities of adolescence by looking at the actual life of young people in regions as varied as Iran, India, France, the USA, or Japan. It also explains how teen cultures have developed in some countries and how young people deal with the conflicts between tradition and modernity in others. Country coverage examines cultural beliefs, gender, personal and cultural identity, relationships (familial), friends and peers, love and sexuality, education, work, media, problems, and outlook for the future, plus topics particular to the culture or region discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of factors influencing teenagers' pregnancy is a topic of importance for this review, among different studies done I read, four of them were chosen for making this review. On first study tilted gender and sexuality notions as determinants of school pregnancies in Tanzania where the researcher wanted to measure perceptions of girls and boys on sexuality, It is a very good study that showed difference between girls and boys by sex and responsibilities and showed that due to decision making capacity, girls fall under boys and influence pregnancy to them, he said that adolescent themselves must take measures of preventing this issue, I argue saying that critical thinking of adolescents is low meaning that schools should take measures of protecting them while at school. I continue to the study on factors contributing to teenage pregnancy in the Capricorn district of the Limpopo Province, by Tebogo M. Mothiba, Maria S. Maputle, this also enjoyable work despite few arguments in problem statement where there is no explanation of existing problem, there is no statistics showing number of pregnant teenagers, and as he was in the community he was to have data from community members for clarification, in results also, it was better to mention percentages of each factor to influence teen pregnancy, on the factors associated with adolescent pregnancies among secondary school students. A study from Tanga-tanzania by Nyakubega Peter, this is also important work, the researcher mentioned some of factors contributing to adolescents pregnancy in high schools include poverty which is the main factor that contribute up 57.1%, I made argument in recommendation where he recommended parents to teach their children about reproductive health, I argue saying that we are not sure if parents knows about reproductive health and recommendations can be firstly based on important findings, he was to recommend firstly on how to support adolescents from poor families. Concerning The Effects of Teenage Pregnancy on the Educational Attainment of Girls at Chorkor by Charles Gyan, this study also is important, his first objective was to identify factors contributing to teenagers pregnancy then after this he came to effects, he missed an objective, I argued saying that there is no objective showing an intervention on solving existing problem.

Book excerpt: Teenage pregnancies and the eventual dropping out of school has been and still is a major problem bedeviling the education sector in many parts of developing countries. There are various factors that have been associated with teenage pregnancies. Among these factors are social and cultural factors that have not been fully explored in the light of the prevailing teenage pregnancies in secondary schools in Kenya. The main purpose of this study was therefore to examine the influence of these factors in teenage pregnancies among secondary school students in Gucha District of Kenya. The study examined the influence of these factors on teenage pregnancies and the interventions that can be adopted to curb the prevalence. The study employed survey research design. The sample consisted of eighty (n=80) form four students and four (n=4) teachers from four girls' secondary schools that were selected to participate in the study. From each of the form 4 classes in respective schools, twenty (20) students were selected using systematic sampling procedure. Questionnaire was used to collect data from the students while interview method was used to collect data from teachers. The collected data were analysed using descriptive statistics, employing both quantitative and qualitative approach. Data from the students were purely analysed quantitatively and presented in frequencies and percentages while data from teachers were analysed qualitatively. From the analysis, the study revealed the following: there are certain social-cultural related factors that influenced teenage pregnancies among secondary school students in Gucha District. These included erosion of African traditional norms and values on sexual behaviour, inadequate involvement of women in decision making (especially on reproductive health matters) and prevalence of female circumcision. In regard to the effects, the study revealed that teenage pregnancies are associated with healthy risks, school drop outs among students in the District. The study suggested all stakeholders in education to work together towards implementation of sound community and school based programs to address the issue of social-cultural aspects that are associated with teenage pregnancies among secondary school students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven million youngsters--one in four adolescents--have only limited potential for becoming productive adults because they are at high risk for encountering serious problems at home, in school, or in their communities. This is one of the disturbing findings in this unique overview of what is known about young people aged 10 to 17 growing up in the United States today. The book explores four problem areas that are the subject of a great deal of public interest and social concern: delinquency, substance abuse, teen pregnancy, and school failure. In examining these problem areas, Dryfoos has three objectives: to present a more cogent picture of adolescents who are at risk of problem behaviors and where they fit in society; to synthesize the experience of programs that have been successful in changing various aspects of these behaviors; and to propose strategies for using this knowledge base to implement more effective approaches to helping youngsters succeed. Among the key concepts emerging from this study are the importance of intense individual attention, social skills training, exposure to the world of work, and packaging components in broad, community-wide interventions. Schools are recognized as the focal institution in prevention, not only in regard to helping children achieve academically, but in giving young people access to social support and health programs. The author also proposes comprehensive youth development initiatives at the local, state and national level, based on programs shown to be effective in real practice. This landmark, state-of-the-art study represents an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the welfare and current problems of youth, including psychologists, sociologists, school administrators, state and federal officials, policymakers, and concerned parents.

Book excerpt: This report presents final impact findings from a large-scale demonstration project and evaluation of the Teen Prevention Education Program (Teen PEP), an in-school, peer-to-peer sexual health promotion program that aims to reduce sexual risk behaviors and associated outcomes among high school students. Although teen pregnancy rates in the United States have decreased over the past 25 years (Martin et al. 2015), teenage pregnancy remains a serious concern. Teen parenting is linked to negative outcomes for both teen parents and their children. Teen mothers are less likely to graduate high school, have lower earnings, receive public assistance for longer periods, and are more likely to be single parents (Hoffman 2008; Perper et al. 2010). Children of teen mothers have worse educational, criminal, and health outcomes as well (Hoffman 2008). Furthermore, teen pregnancy is associated with high costs to the general public; in 2010, teen pregnancy and childbirth in the United States cost taxpayers more than $9.4 billion (National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy 2013). Teen PEP, developed and implemented by the Center for Supportive Schools (CSS) and HiTops, Inc., seeks to reduce rates of teen pregnancy and associated sexual risk behaviors through a combination of school-based, peer-led interactive workshops and school-wide initiatives.
