Book Synopsis Temporary Monuments by : Marie Warsh

Book excerpt: Rosemary Mayer (1943-2014) was a prolific artist, writer, and critic, who entered the New York art scene in the late 1960s. By the early 1970s, she became known both for her large-scale fabric sculptures--inspired by the lives of historical women--and her involvement in the feminist art movement. As the decade progressed, Mayer gravitated away from sculpture as a fixed form and the gallery as the primary setting for experiencing art. In 1977, she began to create ephemeral outdoor installations using materials such as balloons, snow, paper, and fabric. Mayer called these projects "temporary monuments," and she intended for them to celebrate and memorialize individuals and communities through their connections to place, time, and nature. Temporary Monuments: Work by Rosemary Mayer, 1977--1982 is the first comprehensive presentation of this body of work and includes Mayer's documentation of these impermanent artworks. Mayer created photographs, writings, artists' books, and drawings that expand the realm of these projects and reflect her interest in exploring ideas through a variety of media. An introductory essay by Gillian Sneed situates Mayer within the New York art world of the 1970s and '80s and argues that Mayer's public art anticipated more recent practices of site-specific and socially engaged art.
Book Synopsis The Beast in the Boudoir by : Kathleen Kete
Download or read book The Beast in the Boudoir written by Kathleen Kete and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kathleen Kete's wise and witty examination of petkeeping in nineteenth-century Paris provides a unique window through which to view the lives of ordinary French people. She demonstrates how that cliché of modern life, the family dog, reveals the tensions that modernity created for the Parisian bourgeoisie. Kete's study draws on a range of literary and archival sources, from dog-care books to veterinarians's records to Dumas's musings on his cat. The fad for aquariums, attitudes toward vivisection, the dread of rabies, the development of dog breeding—all are shown to reflect the ways middle-class people thought about their lives. Petkeeping, says Kete, was a way to imagine a better, more manageable version of the world—it relieved the pressures of contemporary life and improvised solutions to the intractable mesh that was post-Enlightenment France. The faithful, affectionate family dog became a counterpoint to the isolation of individualism and lack of community in urban life. By century's end, however, animals no longer represented the human condition with such potency, and even the irascible, autonomous cat had been rehabilitated into a creature of fidelity and affection. Full of fascinating details, this innovative book will contribute to the way we understand culture and the creation of class. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Episodes of exile, murder, drug-taking, wild homosexual orgies and court cases are woven into an original study of a significant theme in European culture. The myth of a homoerotic Mediterranean made a major contribution to general attitudes towards Antiquity, the Renaissance and modern Italy and Greece.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensively-researched two-volume series offers a detailed account of "the coming of the persecuted Protestants of France to the New World, and their establishment, particularly in the seaboard provinces [New England] now comprehended within the United States....The volumes now submitted to the public treat first of these antecedent movements, and then take up the narrative of the events that led to the more considerable and more effective emigration, in the latter years of the seventeenth century." This very readable narrative history is rich with details about persons, places and events. Much of the information preserved on these pages was gleaned from unpublished documents found in the United States, France and England: "Manuscripts in the possession of the descendants of refugees; memorials, petitions, wills, and other papers on file in public offices;" as well as numerous church records and other original documents. Volume I includes: Attempted Settlements in Brazil and Florida, Under the Edict: Acadia and Canada, New Netherland, The Antilles, Approach of the Revocation, and The Revocation: Flight from La Rochelle and Aunis. Illustrations, maps, and an appendix enhance the text. An index to full-names, places and subjects for both volumes is contained in Volume II.

Book Synopsis Being in Contact: Encountering a Bare Body by : Mariella Greil
Download or read book Being in Contact: Encountering a Bare Body written by Mariella Greil and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-03-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This choreographed book is dedicated to the phenomenon of the bare body in contemporary performance. This work of artistic research draws on philosophical, biopolitical, and ethical discourses relevant to the appearance of bare bodies in choreography, setting a framework for a reflexive movement between affect and ethics, sensuous address and response. Acts of exposure and concealment are culturally situated and anchored, and are examined for their methodological and nanopolitical significance. The concepts of anarchic responsibility and choreo-ethics lead to a reevaluation of contact, relationship, and solidarity. Choreography is thus understood as a complex field of revelatory experiences based on ecologies of aesthetic perception and ethico-political agency.

Hahn emphasizes the tension between art and industry and between culture and commerce, a dynamic that significantly marked urban commercial modernity that spread new imaginary about consumption. She argues that Parisian consumer culture arose earlier than generally thought, and explores the intense commercialization Paris underwent.
