The attempt of this book is to propose new possibilities and new ways of thinking about Orthodontics beside the ones presented in established and outstanding publications available elsewhere. Some of the presented chapters transmit basic information, other clinical experiences and further offer even a window to the future. In the hands of the reader this book could provide an useful tool for the exploration of the application of information, knowledge and belief to some orthodontic topics and questions.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objectives: This study evaluated the effects of extended acid etching on microtensile bond strength ([micro]TBS) of a etch and rinse adhesive system to sound vital dentin. Etching times of 5, 20 and 80 seconds was used to evaluate the [micro]TBS on vital dentin with resin bonded composite [RBC] restoration (Esthet-X TM) which used a two step etch and rinse adhesive system(Prime Bond NT TM) for bonding. Methods: 26 premolars which were going to be extracted for orthodontic treatment were used for this experiment. The teeth were randomly divided into 3 groups based on the etch times and restored with RBC using two step adhesive and extracted in Guarulhos University (Brazil). After extraction, these teeth were sectioned (Microtome) in such a way to obtain 2 testing beams of 2mm diameter from each tooth were obtained which were trimmed (CNC specimen former, University of Iowa, IA, USA) to a dumb bell shape and tested for the microtensile bond strength in University of Iowa. Out of 26 teeth, 46 beams were obtained. For statistical analysis, One-way ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey-Kramer's test was used to determine whether there were significant differences in micro-tensile bond strength among three etching times under each condition. All tests had a 0.05 level of statistical significance. SAS for Windows (v9.1, SAS Institute Inc, Cary, NC, USA) was used for the data analysis. Fracture mode was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. Results: Bond strengths in 20 seconds and 5 seconds groups were significantly greater than that observed in 80 seconds group, while there was no significant difference between 20 and 5 etching times. SEM showed majority of the failure was adhesive/ joint failure. Significance: The results in this In-vivo study are consistent with other in-vitro studies and thus bring an insight on the importance of duration of phosphoric acid application on dentin and extended etch times could compromise the bond strength of the restorations.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of phosphoric acid etching prior to application of self-etching primer on orthodontic bonding in terms of shear bond strength and the adhesive remnant on the enamel surface at debonding. METHODS: Fifty-one extracted human premolars were pumiced, rinsed, dried, and then subjected to three different treatments: Group 1: no phosphoric acid etching + Transbond Plus SEP; Group 2: 15-second etching with 37% phosphoric acid + rinsed + dried + Transbond Plus SEP; Group 3: 30-second etching with 37% phosphoric acid + rinsed + dried + Transbond Plus SEP. Precoated metal brackets (3M Unitek, APC Plus, Victory brackets) were then bonded following the manufacturer's recommendation. An Instron Universal Testing Machine was used to test shear bond strength (SBS) at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Adhesive remnant index (ARI) was assigned to all specimens under a 16 times magnification using a light microscope. RESULTS: One-way repeated measured analysis of variance test (ANOVA) revealed no significant differences in shear bond strength among all three groups. Kruskal Wallis test revealed that there was a significant difference in ARI score between Group 1 when compared to Groups 2 and 3. Two-way analysis of variance was used to examine any statistical difference in frequency of enamel fracture craters among the three groups. CONCLUSION: There was no statistical difference in shear bond strength between the three groups. Most specimens demonstrated adequate shear bond strength (>/= 6 MPa) for routine clinical application. Etching enamel with phosphoric acid prior to the use of Transbond Plus SEP resulted in more adhesive remaining on the enamel surface. The removal of this excess surface cement may lead to increased enamel loss during post debonding clean up.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers both basic scientific and clinically relevant aspects of dental composite materials with a view to meeting the needs of researchers and practitioners. Following an introduction on their development, the composition of contemporary composites is analyzed. A chapter on polymerization explains the setting reactions and light sources available for light-cured composites. The quality of monomer-to-polymer conversion is a key factor for material properties. Polymerization shrinkage along with the associated stress remains among the most challenging issues regarding composite restorations. A new classification of dental composites is proposed to offer more clinically relevant ways of differentiating between commercially available materials. A review of specific types of composites provides an insight into their key issues. The potential biological issues of dental composites are reviewed in chapters on elution of leachable substances and cariogenicity of resin monomers. Clinical sections focus on material placement, finishing procedures, and the esthetics and clinical longevity of composite restorations. Bonding to tooth tissues is addressed in a separate chapter, as is the efficiency of various composite repair methods. The final chapter discusses future perspectives on dental composite materials.

Book excerpt: While adhesive techniques have already penetrated almost all fields of dentistry, a gap remains between accepted treatment modes and what is carried out in daily practice. This book, a compilation of the proceedings from the 3rd European Symposium on Adhesive Dentistry, provides the information, arguments, and data that clinicians need to incorporate adhesive dentistry into their daily practice. Leaders in the field present the rationale for adhesive techniques in esthetic restorative dentistry. Minimally invasive dentistry and specific issues faced by clinicians using adhesive techniques with ceramic and resin composite restorations are also discussed. Finally, two concluding chapters remind clinicians that they are dentists operating in a biologic system with the objective to restore patients' health.

The volume also stresses the importance of appropriate experimental protocol design in facilitating clinically-relevant research methods, clarifies the mechanisms of adhesion of polymeric materials to hard dental tissues and furnishes a handy reference for routine clinical procedures in restorative and prosthetic dentistry as well as orthodontics. The book introduces important aspects of the chemistry of dental materials and their adaptation to dental hard tissues. It also analyses interfacial phenomena occurring during application of materials, including mechanical properties, and structural-compositional alterations. The text presents the current instrumental approaches in studying related issues and a summary of the current status of theories concerning bonding to dental tissues. This work, in its scope and scientific content, provides an in-depth view of the way in which aesthetic dentistry is currently being practiced.
