Book excerpt: Cementing of indirect restorations with resin cements generally requires the pre-treatment of dentin with an adhesive. When dual-cured or chemical-cured resin cements are used with these single-step adhesives, incompatibility issues exist. This has resulted in manufacturers making chemical changes in their products. Kerr Dental markets a new resin cement, Nexus Third generation (NX3), which utilizes a proprietary redox system different from the second generation of composite luting agent (NX2). The aim of this study was to evaluate microtensile bond strength and mode of failure of NX3 and NX2 with two different adhesive systems (total-etch and self-etch) after 1 week and after 3 months of storage. Methods: Sixty-four non-carious teeth were sectioned to expose the dentin using a low-speed saw. Dentin surfaces were ground with 320-grit SiC paper. The adhesives Optibond Solo Plus (SOL), and Optibond All In One (AIO) were applied, and resin cements (NX2, NX3) were used to lute 4-mm composite discs to the treated dentin surfaces. Microtensile bond strength was determined at 1 week (IM) and after 3 months (3MON) of storage using a universal testing machine (MTS). All specimens were examined under the stereomicroscope to determine the mode of failure. Random specimens from each failure group were examined using scanning electron microscopy. Statistical Analysis: Comparisons between the treatment combinations for differences in microtensile bond strength were performed using Weibull-distribution survival analysis. Comparisons between the treatment combinations for differences in the failure mode were performed using Fisher's Exact tests. The group NX3 SOL IM (30.5 MPa) had significantly higher bond strength than NX3 SOL 3MON (13.4 MPa); NX3 AIO IM (11.3MPa); NX3 AIO 3MON (8.2 MPa; NX2 AIO 3MON (5.8 MPa); NX2 SOL IM (6.3 MPa), and NX2 SOL 3MON (3.2 MPa). The group NX2 AIO IM (19.3 MPa) was not significantly different from NX3 SOL IM. The group NX2 SOL 3MON and group NX2 SOL IM had a significantly higher percentage of teeth with mixed failure than all of the other groups. None of the other groups had significantly different failure mode. The group NX3 SOL IM had 90-percent beam survival beyond 17 MPa, and NX2 AIO IM had 50 percent of beams surviving beyond 17 MPa, a better performance. For all the other groups, more than 50 percent of beams failed below 17 MPa. Results show high evidence of degradation for all groups considered in this investigation. The use of these types of cement adhesive combinations in clinical situations should be used with this understanding.

Book excerpt: The widespread demand for, and use of dental adhesives has fueled an intense development of better and easier dental adhesives in rapid succession and dentists have literally been inundated with successive "generations" of adhesive materials. The "generational" definitions help in identification of chemistries involved, the strength of dentinal bond and the ease of use for the practitioner. The clinical use of resin composites has expanded considerably over the past few years due to increased esthetic demands by patients, new improved formulations and simplification of bonding procedures. Evaluation of bond strength provides a screening mechanism use of adhesives and an indication of the potential for their clinical success.the purpose of this study was to find and compare the shear bond strength of three different generation of adhesive systems fifth, sixth and seventh to dentin of human molars using same composite.

Book excerpt: The goal of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets and corresponding resin composite cement degree of conversion as function of pre-cure temperature. Orthodontic brackets were bonded to paired maxillary premolars or mandibular third molars in an environmental chamber with either room temperature (control) or warmed (68°C) resin cement. Bonding was followed immediately by shear testing of the bracket/cement/tooth interface. Residual resin cement on the bracket base was evaluated using micro-Raman spectroscopy to measure the degree of conversion of the cement from ratios of spectral peak heights at 1610cm−1 and 1640cm−1. Results showed no difference in shear bond strength or degree of conversion between room temperature and pre-warmed groups. Also, there was no difference in bond strength between premolar and third molar groups. The evidence suggests that pre-warming resin composite cement is not beneficial for increasing shear bond strength.

It is fundamental to answer these questions when performing the assessment before beginning the final and decisive phase of prosthetic restoration: cementation. Cementation is a complex procedure that requires good skills, and its outcome depends on the knowledge of the substrates involved and the choice of the most suitable cement for the specific situation. The materials and techniques used for cementation are described in this text, which is specifically dedicated to prosthetists and to those who practice conservative dentistry. This manual examines each substrate and defines the cementation protocols for all cases in daily practice.

They also exhibit excellent aesthetic outcomes, and life-like translucency. Moreover, glass ceramics can provide better adhesion to the underlying tooth preparation, compared with metal-bonded ceramics and oxide ceramics. This is achieved by application of HF etching and silanization, followed by bonding with resin cement. The resin cement is applied as the means to provide a seal, adhesion and 'filler' in the small space that exists between a restoration and prepared tooth. These unique properties have given rise to expanded restoration designs for glass ceramics in comparison to other ceramics, e.g., veneers, inlays or onlays. Hence, durable and stable adhesion is strongly required for the long-term success of these restorations. The aim of this project was to evaluate the durability of adhesion between CAD/CAM ceramics and resin cements as well as the effect of different factors on long-term ceramic adhesion. In the first experiment, two bonding models were compared and contrasted using a microtensile bond strength test. Two surface treatments and two resin cements were also examined. Ceramic to ceramic, as a bonding model, was found to be better than a ceramic to resin composite model. Surface treatments and resin cements had a significant effect on the microtensile bond strength. The second experiment aimed to evaluate the stability of long-term adhesion using six resin luting cements when bonded to three different CAD/CAM ceramics in water over 12 months. According to the outcomes of this study, VITA Suprinity(R) and VITA Enamic(R) demonstrated better long-term adhesion compared to IPS e.max(R) CAD. Furthermore, the microtensile bond strengths of ceramic and resin cement decreased up to 3 months but thereafter became relatively stable. Different resin cements showed different bonding behaviour during prolonged storage time. The third study examined the effect of two etching times on long-term ceramic adhesion and the effect of six resin luting cements on durability of adhesion. This study indicated that prolonged etching time could increase the microtensile bond strength of glass ceramics in the short-term, however, different etching times did not have an obvious influence on the long-term adhesion. In the fourth experiment, an evaluation of sorption, solubility and dimensional change of six resin luting cements immersed in various storage media was undertaken. Significant differences were observed in the sorption, solubility and dimensional change of the cements when exposed to the different storage media over time. The objective of the last experiment was to evaluate the effect of immersion time and media on fracture toughness of six resin cements. It was concluded that fracture toughness varied among the cements and the value decreased over time. Furthermore, the three storage media evaluated in this study seemed to not have had a significant effect on the fracture toughness. It was concluded that, in general, lower sorption, solubility and dimensional change in resin cements seems to produce a higher fracture toughness and microtensile bond strength to glass ceramics. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the biocompatibility and micromechanical properties of newly synthesized antibacterial monomer and cross-linker functional surfactants into a commercially available dental adhesive (Single Bond, 3M ESPE, Saint Paul, MN, USA) at three concentrations (0.05, 0.1, 0.25 mg/mg). All groups were analyzed by evaluation of micro-tensile bond strength, ultimate tensile strength, cell viability, antibacterial properties, and surface micro-hardness. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used for interfacial characterization. Human extracted molars were used as a substrate for bonding adhesives for the micro-tensile bond strength (MTBS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies. Twenty resin-dentin beams (0.9 ± 0.1 mm2) per group were evaluated at 24 hrs and 6 mos for MTBS. Slabs of ~1 mm were analyzed in the SEM for surface characterization. For the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), ten hour-glass shaped specimens (10 x 2 x 1mm) per group were tested at 24 hrs, 1 wk, and 6 mos. To evaluate toxicity, four disc-shaped specimens (5 x 2 mm) per group were incubated with human gingival fibroblasts (HGF). Antibacterial properties were evaluated by incubating three disc-shaped specimens (8 x 1 mm) per group with a strain of caries-producing bacteria S. mutans. Within the limitations of this in vitro study, it was concluded that incorporation of antibacterial monomer and cross-linker additives may be a viable option to help increase the longevity of tooth-colored adhesive restorations. Single Bond adhesive modified with 0.1 mg/mg monomer appears to provide the optimal balance for biocompatibility and micromechanical properties.
