The real, the essential being, does not die. Death is resurrection; rising up out of the body in which the real being has lived. When the material, the sense and sex relations, have served their purposes, life goes forward upon higher planes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From the Spirit World We call our world here the celestial world because, be ing freed from the earthly form, we are at liberty to move among celestial bodies if we choose; and I have chosen so to do. Still, this world may also be properly called the ethereal or spiritual world - celestial, ethereal, spiritual. You are well aware that all space is ether or ethereal; that this ether is filled by spiritual, celestial and material bodies or forms; that these forms differ both in shape and density. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book represents to a large extent the translation of the German "Vorlesungen über Himmelsmechanik" by C. L. Siegel. The demand for a new edition and for an English translation gave rise to the present volume which, however, goes beyond a mere translation. To take account of recent work in this field a number of sections have been added, especially in the third chapter which deals with the stability theory. Still, it has not been attempted to give a complete presentation of the subject, and the basic prganization of Siegel's original book has not been altered. The emphasis lies in the development of results and analytic methods which are based on the ideas of H. Poincare, G. D. Birkhoff, A. Liapunov and, as far as Chapter I is concerned, on the work of K. F. Sundman and C. L. Siegel. In recent years the measure-theoretical aspects of mechanics have been revitalized and have led to new results which will not be discussed here. In this connection we refer, in particular, to the interesting book by V. I. Arnold and A. Avez on "Problemes Ergodiques de la Mecanique Classique", which stresses the interaction of ergodic theory and mechanics. We list the points in which the present book differs from the German text. In the first chapter two sections on the tri pie collision in the three body problem have been added by C. L. Siegel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celestial Bodies is the International Booker-winning and internationally bestselling novel from Jokha Alharthi. Set in the village of al-Awafi in Oman, we encounter three sisters: Mayya, who marries Abdallah after a heartbreak; Asma, who marries from a sense of duty; and Khawla who rejects all offers while waiting for her beloved, who has emigrated to Canada. These three women and their families witness Oman evolve from a traditional, slave-owning society slowly redefining itself after the colonial era, to the crossroads of its complex present. Elegantly structured and taut, Celestial Bodies is a coiled spring of a novel, telling of Oman’s coming-of-age through the prism of one family’s losses and loves. PRAISE FOR CELESTIAL BODIES "An innovative reimagining of the family saga . . . Celestial Bodies is itself a treasure house: an intricately calibrated chaos of familial orbits and conjunctions, of the gravitational pull of secrets” NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW "The great pleasure of reading Celestial Bodies is witnessing a novel argue, through the achieved perfection of its form, for a kind of inquiry that only the novel can really conduct. The ability to move freely through time, the privileged access to the wounded privacies of many characters, the striking diversity of human beings across a relatively narrow canvas, the shock waves as one generation heaves, like tectonic plates, against another, the secrets and lapses and repressions, at once intimate and historical, the power, indeed, of an investigation that is always political and always intimate―here is the novel being supremely itself, proving itself up to the job by changing not its terms of employment but the shape of the task." THE NEW YORKER "Breathtaking. The tale is replete with history, poetry, and philosophy, but also slavery, broken marriages, passion, and not-so-secret lovers." THE ATLAN

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celestial Empires Not scientific to mm up science and religion in the same book Then God himself is unsci entific, for he has so largely and legibly written himself into that Book of Nature that contains all the sciences that even the heathen are without excuse for not reading his eternal power and god head in the things that are made. Is it scientific to attack religion from the side of science, and unscientific to defend it from the same side? Is it sc1entific to illustrate one science by another, as is daily done without rebuke, and unscientific to illustrate that supreme science which we call relrgron by that other science which we call as tronomy? Is it scientific to notice the gigantic tracks of birds in the rocks of the Connecticut valley, and unscientific to notice in both earthly and heavenly strata the still more gigantic foot prints of the Creator? Was it scientific and in excellent taste for the scholar who in the year I 500 found an aged parchment in the monastery of Corwey, in Westphalia, to cry out so that all Europe heard him, This reads like Tacitus, and unscientific as well as in bad taste for the scholar who finds still more ancient inscriptions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Celestial Home: An Astronomer's View of Heaven Professor Drummond in his grand work, Natural Law in the Spiritual World, seems to entertain similar views. He well says that eternal life is not merely existence prolonged forever: it is to know God, to have com munion with Him. This is the correspond ence which will never break, with the environ ment which is truly eternal. But, according to Professor Drummond, this is the only cor respondence that possesses everlastingness; all other correspondences are temporal, they belong to time and to this present world. They are in their nature unfitted for an eternal life. These lower correspondences with the material environment must, in some way, be unloosed and dissociated from the higher elements; and this is effected by a closing catastrophe - Death. Of the angel to him, found in the roth chapter of Revelation. My second. Revelation was finished when handing The Messen ger. To the inhabitants of Earth. This was only the un veiling of the New Testament Scriptures. The author then supposed his agency on the earth was finished, but this was a sad mistake. The little open book that St. John was ordered to swallow was not what the au thor supposed. The book that the angel gave to john to swallow was only a spiritual record sketched and laid in spiritual lines, by the spiritual agent, from the great page of nature, and given to the physical agent, John, who had then finished his mission on the earth, and passed back to the Official Court, holding the keys of mystery 1n his possession, until his second return to his exiled brethren on the earth, spanning the lapse of years. Having returned, he is now officiating with joint officers both on the earth and in the Spirit Land, through which joint operations they are near the end of the nineteenth century, opening up the Sixth Seal at the closing out of the Gentile nations of the earth; at which time he will hand - over his official rec ord into the hands of the Executive Chief, the Son of God, who immediately thereafter will proceed to the opening. Up of the Seventh Seal, which will be the end of all mortality on the earth. This agent being closed in by a wall of flesh, could not be fully made to understand that he yet held the little open book in his possession, the contents of which, when fully revealed to man, will bring, to light the deep-laid plans of mediation, who through the co operation of all the obedient angels, aided by the Spirit of Divine Power, would in the end bring into friendly relations the enemies of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celestial Scenery; Or the Wonders of the Planetary System Displayed, Vol. 1 of 2: Illustrating the Perfections of Deity and a Plurality of Worlds Astr'onomy is that department of knowledge which has for its object to investigate the motions, the magnitudes, and tances of the heavenly bodies; the laws by which their move ments are directed, and the ends they are intended to sub serve in the fabric of the universe. This is a science which has in all ages engaged the attention of the poet, the phi losopher, and the divine, and been the subject of. Their study and admiration. Kings have descended from their thrones to render it homage, and have sometimes enriched it with their labours; and humble shepherds, while watching their flocks by night, have beheld with rapture the blue vault of heaven, with its thousand shining orbs, moving in silent gran deur, till the morning star announced the approach of day. The study of this science must have been coeval with the ex istence of man; for there is no rational being who has for the first time lifted his eyes to the nocturnal sky, and beheld the moon walking in brightness amid the planetary orbs and the host of stars, but must have been struck with admiration and wonder at the splendid scene, and excited to inquiries into the nature and destination of those far-distant orbs. Com pared with the splendour, the amplitude, the august motions, and the ideas of infinity which the celestial vault presents, the most resplendent terrestrial scenes sink into inanity, and appear unworthy of being set in competition with the glories of the sky. Book excerpt: A distinguished dance critic offers an enchanting introduction to the art of ballet As much as we may enjoy Swan Lake or The Nutcracker, for many of us ballet is a foreign language. It communicates through movement, not words, and its history lies almost entirely abroad -- in Russia, Italy, and France. In Celestial Bodies, dance critic Laura Jacobs makes the foreign familiar, providing a lively, poetic, and uniquely accessible introduction to the world of classical dance. Combining history, interviews with dancers, technical definitions, descriptions of performances, and personal stories, Jacobs offers an intimate and passionate guide to watching ballet and understanding the central elements of choreography. Beautifully written and elegantly illustrated with original drawings, Celestial Bodies is essential reading for all lovers of this magnificent art form.

In those days there seemed an immense differ ence between the earth upon which men stood, and the bright objects that shone down upon it from the heavens above. The earth seemed to be vast, dark, and motionless; the celestial lights seemed to be small, and moved, and shone. The earth was then regarded as the fixed centre of the universe, but the Copernican theory has Since deprived it of this pride of place. Yet from another point of View the new conception of its position involves a promotion, since the earth itself is now regarded as a heavenly body of the same order as some of those which shine down upon us. It isamongst them, and it too moves and shines Shines, as some of them do, by reflecting the light of the sun. Could we transport ourselves to a neighbouring world, the earth would seem a star, not distinguishable in kind from the rest.
