Download or read book A Fine Gray Rain: In the Shadow of Mount Pinatubo written by Robert Reynolds and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-05-09 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1991, Mount PInatubo awoke after 500-yrs dormancy. Nearby, America's Clark Air Base evacuated military personnel and dependents to Subic Bay Navy Base. One thousand Air Force and civilians remained to safeguard Clark AB. A series of violent volcanic eruptions hurled ash, rock and gas into the sky. At the same time Typhoon Yunya blew in off the Pacific and earthquakes repeatedly rattled the Philippines countryside. As the rain-laden ash fell back to earth, aircraft hangars, warehouses, homes and buildings crashed to the ground as muddy ash covered the terrain. When the eruptions let up, military officials began evacuating tens of thousands from the country while those deemed mission-essential began salvage operations. This is a true account of this historic event from the perspective of a small group of civilians who were present throughout.
Download or read book Raindrop! written by Phalafala Aphane and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-12-20 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rain, in the African context, has a deep cultural significance. It symbolizes the prevalence of peace as a tirade against any cruel authority or fundamentalism of all kinds. Drop of Rain! is a unique, epic, surrealistic and long unparalleled poem . . .which is used ornamentally as a tender whisper of struggle and peace that offers unlimited thinking and space and uncovers the truth that toughens and softens the dark shades of human souls and the shape of the animus within our dreams from multi-textured life. It reveals the conscience, the consciousness and conscientiousness, the wit, care and foresight—to everyone who feels, thinks, sings, and dreams of Rain; to share that inner glowing, glorious, chorally co-operative music of rain and making of tomorrow—as a liberating and humanistic philosophy; to awaken societal and opinionated values and social intercourse. This poetry, I hope, offers a window on African humanity, in and beyond the continent; because the Rain is everywhere. Every Drop of Rain! has a poem to unite our beautiful world for a permanent global peace. ‘Personal Rain alone is not enough, Village Rain alone is not enough, Country Rain alone is not enough, African Rain alone is not enough, European Rain alone is not enough, American Rain alone is not enough and . . . ‘ A cow does not excrete its whole dung at once. Pula ga e ne! Let it rain in four corners of the world! Drop of Rain! will constantly invite your own freedom of interpretation as you enjoy the journey of reading it.

Book excerpt: The Leaf is a story based on the traditional Faustian theme. It describes how the intuitive Elizabeth and the rational John interact when brought together in a seemingly promising union thats destined to end tragically. Neither appreciates that the dark hand of fate is at work in their lives, having been set in motion by Elizabeths father: a spiritually broken cleric and secret practitioner of an arcane art. This is a work of literary fiction that attempts to be innovative in style, not only by portraying its characters conflicts in traditional form, but also in terms of events external to them and by describing these in carefully crafted language. A respected Literary Reader has described The Leaf as A stunning piece of literature In short, it is a highly structured work that seeks to directly engage the reader through its unorthodox use of language and its compelling and thematic storyline.

They outline the major questions of our time as the poet crisscrosses western Canada and the Pacific Northwest. Book Synopsis The Aesthetics of Shadow by : Daisuke Miyao
Download or read book The Aesthetics of Shadow written by Daisuke Miyao and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this revealing study, Daisuke Miyao explores "the aesthetics of shadow" in Japanese cinema in the first half of the twentieth century. This term, coined by the production designer Yoshino Nobutaka, refers to the perception that shadows add depth and mystery. Miyao analyzes how this notion became naturalized as the representation of beauty in Japanese films, situating Japanese cinema within transnational film history. He examines the significant roles lighting played in distinguishing the styles of Japanese film from American and European film and the ways that lighting facilitated the formulation of a coherent new Japanese cultural tradition. Miyao discusses the influences of Hollywood and German cinema alongside Japanese Kabuki theater lighting traditions and the emergence of neon commercial lighting during this period. He argues that lighting technology in cinema had been structured by the conflicts of modernity in Japan, including capitalist transitions in the film industry, the articulation of Japanese cultural and national identity, and increased subjectivity for individuals. By focusing on the understudied element of film lighting and treating cinematographers and lighting designers as essential collaborators in moviemaking, Miyao offers a rereading of Japanese film history.
