Book excerpt: The Worker Writers School supports writers from one of New York City's most ubiquitous yet least-heard populations: low-wage workers. Mark Nowak, a writer and founding director of the school, presents a selection of haiku written by "frontline workers" during the Covid 19 crisis. The poets included here had already been studying examples of the form and its connection to political resistance from seventeenth-century Japan to the Black Arts Movement of the twentieth century, as well as its capacity to amplify voices of everyday life. These "coronavirus haiku" convey moments of protest, solace, wonder, certainty, love, and strife. The writers in this anthology hail from the school's worker center partners in New York City including Domestic Workers United, New York Taxi Workers Alliance, Damayan Migrant Workers Association, Street Vendor Project, and Retail Action Project: Thomas Barzey, Kerl Brooks, Estabon Chimilio, Nimfa Despabiladeras, Lorraine Garnett, Davidson Garrett, Seth Goldman, Christine Lewis, Doreen McGill, Alando McIntyre, Kelebohile Nkheranye, Alfreda Small, and Paloma Zapata.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first ever history of India to explore the benefits – institutional, political and civil – of British Colonial Rule on the subcontinent. The story of The Making of India begins in the seventeenth century, when a small seafaring island, one tenth the size of the Indian subcontinent, despatched sailing ships over 11,000 miles on a five-month trading journey in search of new opportunities. In the end they helped build a new nation. The sheer audacity and scale of such an endeavour, the courage and enterprise, have no parallel in world history. This book is the first to assess in a single volume almost all aspects of Britain's remarkable contribution in providing India with its lasting institutional and physical infrastructure, which continues to underpin the world's largest democracy in the twenty-first century.

A masterpiece of technical exposition, it was the basic textbook of astronomy for more than a thousand years, and still is the main source for our knowledge of ancient astronomy. This translation, based on the standard Greek text of Heiberg, makes the work accessible to English readers in an intelligible and reliable form. It contains numerous corrections derived from medieval Arabic translations and extensive footnotes that take account of the great progress in understanding the work made in this century, due to the discovery of Babylonian records and other researches. It is designed to stand by itself as an interpretation of the original, but it will also be useful as an aid to reading the Greek text.

Book excerpt: In the aftermath of slavery, the system of indenture (1838-1917) brought approximately half a million Indians to the Caribbean. The majority of this group settled in either British Guiana (now Guyana) or Trinidad. This monograph demonstrates that in British Guiana, the indenture scheme was habitually unstable owing not just to the actions of indentured Indians on sugar estates, but also the intervention of white colonists, including missionaries, magistrates and politicians whose written interventions helped to destabilise the system. By engaging with a wide variety of texts, this monograph challenges the binaries of 'coloniser' and 'colonised' by showing that during indenture, the line between the two was sometimes blurred. Further, this book engages with a wide variety of characters and texts to demonstrate that textual 'creolisation' occurred in the way in which colonists became influenced by the emerging culture of colonial Guyana.
