Book Synopsis A Room for Learning by : Tal Birdsey
Download or read book A Room for Learning written by Tal Birdsey and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2009-09-29 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sometimes I have thought that this school is like the only place where the lilies are considered at all..." In this stirring account of a teacher and his fourteen students tucked away in the Green Mountains of Vermont, educator Tal Birdsey fervently documents the founding year of his small junior high school with wit and humility. Part memoir, part meditation on the power of art and poetry, and part criticism of standardized education, A Room for Learning evokes a spirit of change, in which students were allowed a hand in their own education. With no set curriculum, no prior history, and limited resources, the students delve deep into the poetry of Yeats and Bukowski, the music of Coltrane, the art of Caravaggio, and the emotional landscape of Elie Wiesel's "Night", with each student learning to offer his or her own personal insights. But they also take time out, to be outside amidst the pinecones and fresh air, to be the kids that they still sometimes are and to learn from one another. Isolated from mainstream culture and constantly on the brink of apathy, this diverse group of kids and a teacher created a literary community and celebrated learning and themselves. A Room for Learning is the poignant true story of how one small school demonstrated that a classroom can be a place of transformative power.
Book Synopsis The Battle for Room 314 by : Ed Boland
Download or read book The Battle for Room 314 written by Ed Boland and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this insightfully honest and moving memoir about the realities of teaching in an inner-city school, Ed Boland "smashes the dangerous myth of the hero-teacher [and] shows us how high the stakes are for our most vulnerable students" (Piper Kerman, author of Orange is the New Black). In a fit of idealism, Ed Boland left a twenty-year career as a non-profit executive to teach in a tough New York City public high school. But his hopes quickly collided headlong with the appalling reality of his students' lives and a hobbled education system unable to help them. Freddy runs a drug ring for his incarcerated brother; Nee-cole is homeschooled on the subway by her brilliant homeless mother; Byron's Ivy League dream is dashed because he is undocumented. In the end, Boland isn't hoisted on his students' shoulders and no one passes AP anything. This is no urban fairy tale of at-risk kids saved by a Hollywood hero, but a searing indictment of schools that claim to be progressive but still fail their students. Told with compassion, humor, and a keen eye, Boland's story is sure to ignite debate about the future of American education and attempts to reform it.

Book Synopsis Indigenous Language Politics in the Schoolroom by : Mneesha Gellman
Download or read book Indigenous Language Politics in the Schoolroom written by Mneesha Gellman and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2022-11 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public school classrooms around the world have the power to shape and transform youth culture and identity. In this book, Mneesha Gellman examines how Indigenous high school students resist assimilation and assert their identities through access to Indigenous language classes in public schools. Drawing on ethnographic accounts, qualitative interviews, focus groups, and surveys, Gellman’s fieldwork examines and compares the experiences of students in Yurok language courses in Northern California and Zapotec courses in Oaxaca, Mexico. She contends that this access to Indigenous language instruction in secondary schooling serves as an arena for Indigenous students to develop their sense of identity and agency, and provides them tools and strategies for civic, social, and political participation, sometimes in unexpected ways. Showcasing young people’s voices, and those of their teachers and community members, in the fight for culturally relevant curricula and educational success, Gellman demonstrates how the Indigenous language classroom enables students to understand, articulate, and resist the systemic erasure and destruction of their culture embedded in state agendas and educational curricula. Access to Indigenous language education, she shows, has positive effects not only for Indigenous students, but for their non-Indigenous peers as well, enabling them to become allies in the struggle for Indigenous cultural survival. Through collaborative methodology that engages in research with, not on, Indigenous communities, Indigenous Language Politics in the Schoolroom explores what it means to be young, Indigenous, and working for social change in the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: CONTENT: Views From My Schoolroom Windowis the truecoming-of-agestory of a 19thcentury schoolgirl who became a teacher upon turning 15 years old.Laurentine'snonfiction, historical account, in the form of edited diary and supplemental writings, was based in Janesville, Wisconsin 1856 -- 1870. BecauseLaurentinewas a prolificwriter and an insightful chronicler of changearound her, readers are provided, through the lens of her "father confessor" (her diary), with an engaging, richly detailed and unique set of views of family life, social relations, community debates, education standards, and the face of war -- the Civil War. Laurentine, a surprisingly modern young woman for her time, challenges us to reconsider what we think we know about 19th century women, their expectations in life, and their attitudes towards roles and duties.Laurentine's humor and escapades help us shedmisconceptions of the dark and dour cloaks of thisera in history. While it may be difficult to imagine,Laurentine's descriptions of prairie life as a schoolteacher in Janesville, Wisconsinprecededthose many of us have known fromlives in theLittle Housebooksby more than a generation! Book Synopsis The Schoolroom by : Dale Allen Gyure
Download or read book The Schoolroom written by Dale Allen Gyure and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines schoolrooms and their material contents to reveal insights into the evolution of education and the translation of educational theories and cultural ideals into practice. School attendance is nearly universal in our society, yet very little is known about the history of the classrooms we occupy and the objects we encounter and use in our educational lives. Why are our school classrooms designed as they are? When was the blackboard invented? When did computers start appearing in schools? Through analysis of classrooms and objects within them, The Schoolroom: A Social History of Teaching and Learning details the history of American education, describing how architects, in collaboration with educators, have shaped learning spaces in response to curricular and pedagogical changes, population shifts, cultural expectations, and concern for children's health and well-being. It illustrates connections between form and function, showing how a well-designed school building can encourage learning, and reveals little-known histories of ubiquitous educational objects such as blackboards, desks, and computers.
