Book excerpt: **SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE STARRING BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH** 'It was a revelation. Moving, terrifying, funny and brilliant. I shall never forget it - an amazing achievement' STEPHEN FRY 'Brash and frightening and funny' NEW YORK TIMES * * * * * * The Sunday Times bestselling Gypsy Boy was the first commercial memoir written by someone on the inside of the notoriously secretive culture of the Romany Gypsies. MIKEY WAS BORN into a Romany Gypsy family. They live in a closeted community, and little is known about their way of life. After centuries of persecution Gypsies are wary of outsiders and if you choose to leave you can never come back. This is something Mikey knows only too well. Growing up, he rarely went to school, and seldom mixed with non-Gypsies. The caravan and camp were his world. But although Mikey inherited a vibrant and loyal culture, his family's legacy was bittersweet with a hidden history of grief and abuse. Eventually Mikey was forced to make an agonising decision - to stay and keep secrets, or escape and find somewhere he could truly belong. Mikey's amazing story is continued in the sequel Gypsy Boy on the Run.

Book excerpt: A masterful work of personal reportage, this volume is also a vibrant portrait of a mysterious people and an essential document of a disappearing culture. Fabled, feared, romanticized, and reviled, the Gypsies—or Roma—are among the least understood people on earth. Their culture remains largely obscure, but in Isabel Fonseca they have found an eloquent witness. In Bury Me Standing, alongside unforgettable portraits of individuals—the poet, the politician, the child prostitute—Fonseca offers sharp insights into the humor, language, wisdom, and taboos of the Roma. She traces their exodus out of India 1,000 years ago and their astonishing history of persecution: enslaved by the princes of medieval Romania; massacred by the Nazis; forcibly assimilated by the communist regimes; evicted from their settlements in Eastern Europe, and most recently, in Western Europe as well. Whether as handy scapegoats or figments of the romantic imagination, the Gypsies have always been with us—but never before have they been brought so vividly to life. Includes fifty black and white photos.

Book excerpt: Romany Gypsy True stories, Bittersweet and sometimes funny, from my childhood.1943 to 1959. Family History: Lords, Ladies, and Gypsies going back over 700 hundred years. These are true Romany Gypsy stories from my childhood as I remember them, with a little bit of the author's artistic licence to make them more enjoyable. If you are looking for stories that romanticise a Romany Gypsy life on the open road, then this book is probably not for you. However if you are interested in the true life of Romany Gypsy's, you may find this book interesting. Not all Romany Gypsies lived in wagons but more often houses, preferring a permanent base where they couldn't be told to move on, but still travelling and living the gypsy life in their horse-drawn vardo wagons, carrying on the Romany traditions of flower and rag rug making, duckering (fortune-telling), and hawking (selling) flowers and firewood logs from a horse-drawn cart, as me and mum did, travelling back and forth from the gypsy Camp on Belverdere Marshes the hop picking and fruit farms. Many kept their carts and horses in their backyards as we did. Some had vardos (horse-drawn wagons) and houses, as did my grandad's sister, Ocean. Family History: Lords, Ladies, and Gypsies going back to over 700 hundred years. We are related to Princess Di and her boys, for me and I suppose you [Lenny Harvey] are the same generation as me. I think that makes her our fifteenth cousin once-removed (that means fifteen generations back, we shared a grandad).Winston Churchill is also our thirteenth cousin three times removed. The removed bit means they are not of the same generation as us. Diana is actually of my mum's generation, and Winston is the same generation as my great grandad. Sarah Ferguson and her daughters are also our cousins. We share a great granddad back in the 1400s called Richard Yate. I met HRH Prince of Wales in 1996 in Crimea, Ukraine. At the time, I was not aware that he was family. He never mentioned it either. Sadly none of the family were invited to either Diana or Sarah's wedding. Probably with all our travelling about they lost our address.

Linguist Yaron Matras, who has spent years working with the Roma, gives the first comprehensive account of their culture, language and history, shattering the myths that surround them. 'Absorbing . . . almost everything we imagine we know about Gypsies is wrong.' Margarette Driscoll, Sunday Times 'Fascinating, compassionate and knowledgeable . . . Yaron Matras is an authority.' Melanie McDonagh, Evening Standard 'An ancient and rich culture, immaculately researched.' Peter Stanford, Observer 'Romani history is unseen and unrecognised. Matras synthesises what facts we have to create a visible, compelling record.' David Morley, Independent

Book excerpt: Romany Legends Daniel and Dolly Buckley The Gypsy Way traces Mary King’s unique family history back to the 1920s. The book follows the Buckleys, a well-known Romany gypsy family that lived according to gypsy traditions. The book contains tales, reflections, memories and anecdotes of days gone by; from when Daniel and Dolly were just young children, to them raising their own young family whilst living in a wagon. The couple faced struggles on a daily basis, but lived a happy, content life. The end of their lives saw their funerals becoming events of an unprecedented scale, and rightly so, for in their time this couple were living legends. “Many of the gypsies of today will be amazed by my upbringing, as it won’t be the familiar gypsy way that they live and breathe now; but it was the only way of life I knew as a child.” Inspired by Maggie Smith-Bendell’s Rabbit Stew and a Penny or Two, the book provides a unique insight into Romany gypsy life, which Mary hopes will inspire readers to preserve traditions that are lost in modern life. Romany Legends Daniel and Dolly Buckley The Gypsy Way is illustrated with photographs and will appeal to readers who want to learn more about gypsy traditions.

Book excerpt: In a lifetime traversing Britain's lanes and byways, Dominic Reeve has witnessed a changing world for the Romani Gypsies. Since the 1950s, the horse-drawn wagons have given way to brightly chromed vehicles, stopping-places have disappeared - but the Travellers still cling to the precious old traditions and the freedom of an outdoor life. Beneath the Blue Sky tells of horse-fairs and fireside deals, of snowbound Christmases and the joy of taking possession of a new motor. Dominic Reeve recalls feuds and friendships, cycles of parting and meeting, and the struggle in the face of prejudice. Above all, he paints an unforgettable picture of the self-reliance, wit and courage of the Romani people.
