Book Synopsis The Plays of David Garrick, Volume 6 by : Harry William Pedicord
Download or read book The Plays of David Garrick, Volume 6 written by Harry William Pedicord and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1982-09 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Garrick's accomplishments as an actor, manager, and theatrical innovator brought him great fame and fortune, and his ideas influenced not only his own age but succeeding ages as well. Yet as a playwright, a part of the elegant combination of talents that was David Garrick, he has never achieved the critical reputation he richly deserves, in main because of the unavailability of texts and the lack of proper assessment of the historic importance of his plays in the English theatre. This first complete edition makes available to scholars and students all the plays of Garrick in well edited texts, with commentary and notes. Contents: Alfred. A Masque (James Thomson and David Mallet), 1751; Every Man in His Humour. A Comedy (Ben Jonson), 1751; Zara. A Tragedy (Aaron Hill), 1754; The Chances. A Comedy (John Fletcher and George Villiers), 1754; and Rule a Wife and Have a Wife. A Comedy (Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher), 1756.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do the temporal and dynamic patterns of media forms and practices create complex constructions of meaning, identity and value? How can we describe the way cinematic images generate and transform the affectively grounded structures that survey, confirm or revise a political community’s horizon of values? Using the exemplary case of feelings of guilt, the author develops an approach that makes patterns of audiovisual compositions intelligible as aesthetic modulations of moral feelings. A sense of guilt is presented here as neither an individualistic psychological emotion nor an external social mechanism of control but as a paradigmatic case for understanding politics and history as based upon embodied affectivity and shared relations to the world. By taking three distinct examples – German Post-War cinema, Hollywood Western and films on climate change – patterns of audiovisual composition and the inherent calculation of affect are analyzed as practices shaping the conditions of possibility of political communities and their historicity.

Book Synopsis Patriot's History® of the Modern World, Vol. II by : Larry Schweikart
Download or read book Patriot's History® of the Modern World, Vol. II written by Larry Schweikart and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling historians turn their focus to America’s role in the world since the end of World War II Schweikart, author of the number one New York Times bestseller A Patriot’s History of the United States, and Dougherty take a critical look at America, from the postwar boom to her search for identity in the twenty-first century. The second volume of A Patriot’s History of the Modern World picks up in 1945 with a world irrevocably altered by World War II and a powerful, victorious United States. But new foes and challenges soon arose: the growing sphere of Communist influence, hostile dictatorships and unreliable socialist allies, the emergence of China as an economic contender, and the threat of world Islamification. The book reestablishes the argument of American exceptionalism and the interplay of our democratic pillars—Judeo-Christian religious beliefs, free market capitalism, land ownership, and common law—around the world. Schweikart and Dougherty offer a fascinating conservative history of the last six decades.
