Book Synopsis Feminism and Art in Postwar Italy by : Francesco Ventrella
Download or read book Feminism and Art in Postwar Italy written by Francesco Ventrella and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A renowned art critic of the 1960s, Carla Lonzi abandoned the art world in 1970 to found Rivolta Femminile, a pioneering feminist collective in Italy. Rather than separating the art world luminary from the activist, however, this book looks at the two together. It demonstrates that even as Lonzi refused art, she articulated how feminist spaces and communities drew strength from creativity. The eleven essays in this book document the artistic and feminist circles of postwar Italy, a time characterised both by radical protest and avant-garde aesthetics, using primary and archival sources never before translated into English. They map Lonzi's deep connections to the influential Italian Arte Povera movement, and explore her complicated relationship with female artists of the time, such as Carla Accardi and Suzanne Santoro. Carla Lonzi's written work and activism represents a crucial, but previously overlooked, feminist intervention in traditional art history from beyond the Anglo-American canon. This book is a timely and urgent addition to our understanding of radical politics, separatist feminism and art criticism in the postwar period.
Book Synopsis Journal of Cultural Management and Cultural Policy/Zeitschrift für Kulturmanagement und Kulturpolitik by : Constance DeVereaux

This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Journal of Cultural Management and Cultural Policy offers international perspectives on a wide range of issues in cultural management and cultural policy research and practice. The social situatedness of art and the interplay between artists, non-artists, institutions, and policy makers have changed in the past decades. Democracies are at risk and the geopolitical world order has changed. The global climate emergency and the rise of autocratic governments are just two forces posing new contexts and threatening possibilities for socially engaged art. At the same time, artists and curators are suspected of belonging to a new professional managerial class that entangles them in a neoliberal economic system. Can socially engaged art catalyze progressive civic consciousness? Can art address big questions of social justice? This issue provides some answers to these questions.
Book Synopsis The Uses of Photography by : Jill Dawsey
Download or read book The Uses of Photography written by Jill Dawsey and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2016-09-21 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Uses of Photography examines a network of artists who were active in Southern California between the late 1960s and early 1980s and whose experiments with photography opened the medium to a profusion of new strategies and subjects. These artists introduced urgent social issues and themes of everyday life into the seemingly neutral territory of conceptual art, through photographic works that took on hybrid forms, from books and postcards to video and text-and-image installations. Tracing a crucial history of photoconceptual practice, The Uses of Photography focuses on an artistic community that formed in and around the young University of California San Diego, founded in 1960, and its visual arts department, founded in 1967. Artists such as Eleanor Antin, Allan Kaprow, Fred Lonidier, Martha Rosler, Allan Sekula, and Carrie Mae Weems employed photography and its expanded forms as a means to dismantle modernist autonomy, to contest notions of photographic truth, and to engage in political critique. The work of these artists shaped emergent accounts of postmodernism in the visual arts and their influence is felt throughout the global contemporary art world today. Contributors include David Antin, Pamela M. Lee, Judith Rodenbeck, and Benjamin J. Young. Published in association with the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. Exhibition dates: Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego: September 24, 2016ÐJanuary 2, 2017
Book Synopsis Terrorism and the Arts by : Jonathan Harris
Download or read book Terrorism and the Arts written by Jonathan Harris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the key definitions, forms, contexts and impacts of terrorist activity on the arts in the modern era, using historical and contemporary perspectives. Its empirical case studies include theatre, literature, music, visual art, mass media, film and the mores of ‘ordinary life.’ While its immediate reflective context is Islamic fundamentalist terrorism, the book reviews a broader range of definitions and counter-definitions of 'terrorism', 'state terrorism' and 'states of terror,' examining uses of the terms through a series of comparative analyses. Chapters focus on the intersection of these definitional questions with heuristic analysis of art forms, cultural activities and their socio-historical contexts. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, terrorism, politics and the media, and visual culture.
Book Synopsis In the Canyon, Revise the Canon by : Géraldine Gourbe
Download or read book In the Canyon, Revise the Canon written by Géraldine Gourbe and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the onset of the social and cultural backlash that was brought on by the Reagan administration in the early eighties, Southern California was ripe territory for the genesis and development of emancipation movements for and by African Americans, Chicanos, pacifists, Marxists, feminists and homosexuals. Starting in the late sixties, these revolutionary waves particularly influenced practices such as performance art, video, installation and collaboration, which led to the construction of alternatives like artist-run spaces, non-profit spaces and artist-run community art spaces. In Santa Barbara, Los Angeles and San Diego, collaborative public action was constructed around utopian knowledge which was then redirected towards universities and art schools that favored the emergence of radical pedagogies. These other manners of experimental thinking, doing and teaching permitted artists to deconstruct certain canons that were inherited from European tradition and art history, and provoked a reexamination of 'The American way of life'.

This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents a comprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus Baconia Lewis (Histeridae: Histerinae: Exosternini). Previously, Baconia contained 27 species. We move four species into Baconia from other genera, and describe 85 species as new, bringing the total to 116 species. Identification keys are presented to allow identification of all the species, and most species are illustrated by color photographs and drawings of diagnostic characteristics. The species mainly occur in the Neotropical region. But several species are known from the U.S., and there are even species occurring in eastern and southeastern Asia. Many of the species of Baconia exhibit brilliant metallic coloration, a feature of as yet unknown significance. Many are also strongly flat-tened, an adaptation for a life under the bark of dead trees, where they are believed mainly to prey on bark beetles and their larvae.

Download or read book Vision's Immanence written by Peter Lurie and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2004-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lurie takes particular interest in the influence of cinema on Faulkner's fiction and the visual strategies he both deployed and critiqued. These include the suggestion of cinematic viewing on the part of readers and of characters in each of the novels; the collective and individual acts of voyeurism in Sanctuary and Light in August; the exposing in Absalom! Absalom! and Light in August of stereotypical and cinematic patterns of thought about history and race; and the evocation of popular forms like melodrama and the movie screen in If I forget thee, Jerusalem. Offering innovative readings of these canonical works, this study sheds new light on Faulkner's uniquely American modernism."--BOOK JACKET.
