Book excerpt: Two main areas of offshore activity are addressed in this book: Site investigation on assessment; and Applications and foundation engineering. The 37 contributions from a wide ranging group of international experts, are resulting from the Offshore Site Investigation and Foundation Behaviour Conference, London, U.K., September 1992. Adequate determination of site conditions can only be achieved by the integrated approach of using geological, geophysical and geotechnical data. Developments in data acquisition techniques are illustrated through case histories in the section on Geotechnical Sampling and Testing. In the section on Advanced Interpretation Techniques and Integrated Interpretations the state of the art of these topics is also illustrated by case histories. A review of foundation behaviour is presented in the section on Gravity Foundations, Foundation Performance Monitoring, Piling Research and Design Criteria. These topics are illustrated in the light of field experience and recent research, in particular that involving full-scale tests and monitoring. This book provides many illustrative figures and much pertinent information to exploration and marine geophysicists, petroleum and offshore engineers and for researchers working these fields.

Book excerpt: Geological field reconnaissance and geophysical evaluations were made of four areas within the Laramie Range for the purpose of selecting a site suitable for construction of a hard rock prototype test silo. The investigated areas are located between Laramie and Cheyenne in southeastern Wyoming, within the outcrop belt of Sherman granite. Within three areas, fourteen sites or prospective test beds were investigated by means of seismic surveys and core borings. An evaluation of the data gathered in these areas revealed that Site P6-2A was suited for location of a hard rock prototype silo, and this site was investigated in more detail than were the other sites. This report describes the manner in which field tests were performed, types of information gathered, and data used to evaluate the sites, i.e., geologic and topographic mapping, core borings, in situ velocity measurements, laboratory and in situ strength tests, groundwater studies, etc. (Author).

Book excerpt: Instead of fixating on formulae, Soil Mechanics: Concepts and Applications, Third Edition focuses on the fundamentals. This book describes the mechanical behaviour of soils as it relates to the practice of geotechnical engineering. It covers both principles and design, avoids complex mathematics whenever possible, and uses simple methods and ideas to build a framework to support and accommodate more complex problems and analysis. The third edition includes new material on site investigation, stress-dilatancy, cyclic loading, non-linear soil behaviour, unsaturated soils, pile stabilization of slopes, soil/wall stiffness and shallow foundations. Other key features of the Third Edition: • Makes extensive reference to real case studies to illustrate the concepts described • Focuses on modern soil mechanics principles, informed by relevant research • Presents more than 60 worked examples • Provides learning objectives, key points, and self-assessment and learning questions for each chapter • Includes an accompanying solutions manual for lecturers This book serves as a resource for undergraduates in civil engineering and as a reference for practising geotechnical engineers.

This book was released on 2022-08-17 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents the recent advances on testing and experimentation in civil engineering, especially in the branches of geotechnics, transportation, hydraulics, and natural resources. It includes advances in physical modelling, monitoring techniques, data acquisition and analysis, and provides an invaluable contribution for the installation of new civil engineering experimental facilities. The first part of the book covers the latest advances in testing and experimentation in key domains of geotechnics: soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering, rock mechanics and rock engineering, and engineering geology. Some of the topics covered include new developments in topographic survey acquisition for applied mapping and in situ geotechnical investigations; laboratory and in situ tests to estimate the relevant parameters needed to model the behaviour of rock masses and land structures; monitoring and inspection techniques designed for offshore wind foundations. The second part of the book highlights the relevance of testing and monitoring in transportation. Full-scale accelerated pavement testing, and instrumentation becomes even more important nowadays when, for sustainability purposes, non-traditional materials are used in road and airfield pavements. Innovation in testing and monitoring pavements and railway tracks is also developed in this part of the book. Intelligent traffic systems are the new traffic management paradigm, and an overview of new solutions is addressed here. Finally, in the third part of the book, trends in the field and laboratory measurements and corresponding data analysis are presented according to the different hydraulic domains addressed in this publication, namely maritime hydraulics, surface water and river hydraulics and urban water.

Book excerpt: The most isolated archipelago on the west coast of the Americas, inhabited for at least 10,500 years, Haida Gwaii has fascinated scientists, social scientists, historians, and inquisitive travellers for decades. This book brings together the results of extensive and varied field research by both federal agencies and independent researchers, and carefully integrates them with earlier archaeological, ethnohistorical, and paleoenvironmental work in the region. It imparts significant new information about the natural history of Haida Gwaii, also known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, and the adjacent areas of Hecate Strait. Chapters analyze new data on ice retreat, shoreline and sea level change, faunal communities, and culture history, providing a more comprehensive picture of the history of the islands from the late glacial through the prehistoric period, to the time of European contact, known to the Haida as the "time of the Iron People."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis, Design and Construction of Foundations outlines methods for analysis and design of the construction of shallow and deep foundations with particular reference to case studies in Hong Kong and China, as well as a discussion of the methods used in other countries. It introduces the main approaches used by geotechnical and structural engineers, and the precautions required for planning, design and construction of foundation structures. Some computational methods and computer programmes are reviewed to provide tools for performing a more realistic analysis of foundation systems. The authors examine in depth the methods used for constructing shallow foundations, deep foundations, excavation and lateral support systems, slope stability analysis and construction, and ground monitoring for proper site management. Some new and innovative foundation construction methods are also introduced. It is illustrated with case studies of failures and defects from actual construction projects. Some advanced and modern theories are also covered in this book. This book is more targeted towards the understanding of the basic behavior and the actual construction of many geotechnical works, and this book is not dedicated to any design code or specification, though Euro codes and Hong Kong code are also used in this book for illustration. It is ideal for consulting geotechnical engineers, undergraduate and postgraduate students.
