Book Synopsis In Search of Marvellousness by : Marcus Lovett
Download or read book In Search of Marvellousness written by Marcus Lovett and published by Marvellousness. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Search of Marvellousness. Fear, pain and the pursuit of happiness. The back story. Is your pain telling you something? Do you listen to it or just try to drown it out? What if your discomfort inspired you to push beyond, but you chose to avoid being uncomfortable? This is a story of pain, discomfort, fear and rejection and how an action man learns to embrace and listen to his spirit. In Search of Marvellousness is a story where everything happens at once and time is fluid, not unlike Kurt Vonnegut’s “Slaughterhouse-Five”, but without the extraterrestrials. It’s a tale of a life filled with adventure and travel like Roald Dahl’s “Going Solo” but without a war. It reflects Louise Hay’s “You Can Heal Your Life”, where pain and discomfort keep coming until the lesson is learned, but without affirmations. In Search of Marvellousness is the inner story of Marcus Lovett, the boy from Bendigo who just wanted to travel the world and have a good time. From being Australia’s first freestyle skier in the 1988 Olympics Winter Games at Calgary to being an Acapulco cliff diver and stuntman, risking life and limb for glory and a few dollars. The physical pain of breaks and dislocations screamed lessons that were sometimes lost in translation but continued until they were understood. In Search of Marvellousness covers the mental and emotional self-doubts of imposter syndrome. Marcus produces and hosts the long-running television show called the Snowshow. Filmed worldwide and broadcast globally, the Snowshow was a skiing and snowboarding travel show. Though earning money doing what he loved, he still felt like a ski bum looking for his next free ride. In Search of Marvellousness explores the connection between physical, mental, emotional and spiritual discomfort. Marcus explores the joy of fear and discovers self-esteem is the answer, constantly reminding himself to keep the spirit.

Paxton's marvelous song has finally become a stunning picture book, featuring incredible and wildly imaginative art by Steve Cox, illustrator of the award-winning PIGS MIGHT FLY. Book Synopsis The Marvelous Clouds by : John Durham Peters
Download or read book The Marvelous Clouds written by John Durham Peters and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An ambitious re-writing—a re-synthesis, even—of concepts of media and culture . . . It is nothing less than an attempt at a history of Being.” —Los Angeles Review of Books When we speak of clouds these days, it is as likely that we mean data clouds or network clouds as cumulus or stratus. In their sharing of the term, both kinds of clouds reveal an essential truth: that the natural world and the technological world are not so distinct. In The Marvelous Clouds, John Durham Peters argues that though we often think of media as environments, the reverse is just as true—environments are media. Peters defines media expansively as elements that compose the human world. Drawing from ideas implicit in media philosophy, Peters argues that media are more than carriers of messages: they are the very infrastructures combining nature and culture that allow human life to thrive. Through an encyclopedic array of examples from the oceans to the skies, The Marvelous Clouds reveals the long prehistory of so-called new media. Digital media, Peters argues, are an extension of early practices tied to the establishment of civilization such as mastering fire, building calendars, reading the stars, creating language, and establishing religions. New media do not take us into uncharted waters, but rather confront us with the deepest and oldest questions of society and ecology: how to manage the relations people have with themselves, others, and the natural world. A wide-ranging meditation on the many means we have employed to cope with the struggles of existence—from navigation to farming, meteorology to Google—The Marvelous Clouds shows how media lie at the very heart of our interactions with the world around us.
Book Synopsis Marvelous Possessions by : Stephen Greenblatt
Download or read book Marvelous Possessions written by Stephen Greenblatt and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A masterwork of history and cultural studies, Marvelous Possessions is a brilliant meditation on the interconnected ways in which Europeans of the Age of Discovery represented non-European peoples and took possession of their lands, particularly in the New World. In a series of innovative readings of travel narratives, judicial documents, and official reports, Stephen Greenblatt shows that the experience of the marvelous, central to both art and philosophy, was manipulated by Columbus and others in the service of colonial appropriation. Much more than simply a collection of the odd and exotic, Marvelous Possessions is both a highly original extension of Greenblatt’s thinking on a subject that has permeated his career and a thrilling tale of wandering, kidnapping, and go-betweens—of daring improvisation, betrayal, and violence. Reaching back to the ancient Greeks, forward to the present, and, in his new preface, even to fantastical meetings between humans and aliens in movies like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Greenblatt would have us ask: How is it possible, in a time of disorientation, hatred of the other, and possessiveness, to keep the capacity for wonder—for tolerant recognition of cultural difference—from being poisoned?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toronto has long been a place that people of colour move to in order to join queer of colour communities. Yet the city’s rich history of activism by queer and trans people who are Black, Indigenous, or of colour (QTBIPOC) remains largely unwritten and unarchived. While QTBIPOC have a long and visible presence in the city, they always appear as newcomers in queer urban maps and archives in which white queers appear as the only historical subjects imaginable. The first collection of its kind to feature the art, activism, and writings of QTBIPOC in Toronto, Marvellous Grounds tells the stories that have shaped Toronto’s landscape but are frequently forgotten or erased. Responding to an unmistakable desire in QTBIPOC communities for history and lineage, this rich volume allows us to imagine new ancestors and new futures.
