Download or read book On Belief written by Slavoj Zizek and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the basis of belief in an era when globalization, multiculturalism and big business are the new religion? Slavoj Zizek, renowned philosopher and irrepressible cultural critic takes on all comers in this compelling and breathless new book. From 'cyberspace reason' to the paradox that is 'Western Buddhism', On Belief gets behind the contours of the way we normally think about belief, in particular Judaism and Christianity. Holding up the so-called authenticity of religious belief to critical light, Zizek draws on psychoanalysis, film and philosophy to reveal in startling fashion that nothing could be worse for believers than their beliefs turning out to be true.

Book Synopsis Knowledge, Belief, and God by : Matthew A. Benton
Download or read book Knowledge, Belief, and God written by Matthew A. Benton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent decades have seen a fertile period of theorizing within mainstream epistemology which has had a dramatic impact on how epistemology is done. Investigations into contextualist and pragmatic dimensions of knowledge suggest radically new ways of meeting skeptical challenges and of understanding the relation between the epistemological and practical environment. New insights from social epistemology and formal epistemology about defeat, testimony, a priority, probability, and the nature of evidence all have a potentially revolutionary effect on how we understand our epistemological place in the world. Religion is the place where such rethinking can potentially have its deepest impact and importance. Yet there has been surprisingly little infiltration of these new ideas into philosophy of religion and the epistemology of religious belief. Knowledge, Belief, and God incorporates these myriad new developments in mainstream epistemology, and extends these developments to questions and arguments in religious epistemology. The investigations proposed in this volume offer substantial new life, breadth, and sophistication to issues in the philosophy of religion and analytic theology. They pose original questions and shed new light on long-standing issues in religious epistemology; and these developments will in turn generate contributions to epistemology itself, since religious belief provides a vital testing ground for recent epistemological ideas.
Book Synopsis A Church Beyond Belief by : William L. Sachs
Download or read book A Church Beyond Belief written by William L. Sachs and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addresses “belonging before believing” and other new patterns for remaking congregations As we move beyond the “emergent” or “missional” church paradigm, pastors and other church leaders are discovering a new reality: people (especially younger generations) are coming to church not as believers, but to find a place to belong—with or without faith. This book describes the dilemma and the distractions that currently prevent congregations from being the place where that sense of belonging can unfold and guide newcomers in the discovery of faith. The authors argue that despite elaborate talk of change, spirituality, transformation, and conflict resolution, congregations are still mired in old patterns of belonging. Using broad-based career experiences, surveys of religious life, historical precedent, and insights from social psychology about what it means to belong today, the book suggests new and effective approaches to help churches make vital connections.
Book Synopsis Belief in God in an Age of Science by : John Polkinghorne
Download or read book Belief in God in an Age of Science written by John Polkinghorne and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1998-03-30 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Polkinghorne is a major figure in today’s debates over the compatibility of science and religion. Internationally known as both a theoretical physicist and a theologian—the only ordained member of the Royal Society—Polkinghorne brings unique qualifications to his inquiry into the possibilities of believing in God in an age of science. In this thought-provoking book, the author focuses on the collegiality between science and theology, contending that these "intellectual cousins" are both concerned with interpreted experience and with the quest for truth about reality. He argues eloquently that scientific and theological inquiries are parallel. The book begins with a discussion of what belief in God can mean in our times. Polkinghorne explores a new natural theology and emphasizes the importance of moral and aesthetic experience and the human intuition of value and hope. In other chapters, he compares science’s struggle to understand the nature of light with Christian theology’s struggle to understand the nature of Christ. He addresses the question, Does God act in the physical world? And he extends his ideas about the role of chaos theory, surveys the prospects for future dialogue between scientific and theological thinkers, and defends a critical realist understanding of the activities of both disciplines. Polkinghorne concludes with a consideration of the nature of mathematical truths and the links between the complementary realities of physical and mental experience.

Book excerpt: From "the world's greatest tour guide," a deeply-researched, captivating journey through the rich history of Christianity and the winding paths of the French and Italian countryside that will feed mind, body, and soul (New York Times). "What a wondrous work! This beautifully written and totally clear-eyed account of his pilgrimage will have you wondering whether we should all embark on such a journey, either of the body, the soul or, as in Egan's case, both." --Cokie Roberts "Egan draws us in, making us feel frozen in the snow-covered Alps, joyful in valleys of trees with low-hanging fruit, skeptical of the relics of embalmed saints and hopeful for the healing of his encrusted toes, so worn and weathered from their walk."--The Washington Post Moved by his mother's death and his Irish Catholic family's complicated history with the church, Timothy Egan decided to follow in the footsteps of centuries of seekers to force a reckoning with his own beliefs. He embarked on a thousand-mile pilgrimage through the theological cradle of Christianity to explore the religion in the world that it created. Egan sets out along the Via Francigena, once the major medieval trail leading the devout to Rome, and travels overland via the alpine peaks and small mountain towns of France, Switzerland and Italy, accompanied by a quirky cast of fellow pilgrims and by some of the towering figures of the faith--Joan of Arc, Henry VIII, Martin Luther. The goal: walking to St. Peter's Square, in hopes of meeting the galvanizing pope who is struggling to hold together the church through the worst crisis in half a millennium. A thrilling journey, a family story, and a revealing history, A Pilgrimage to Eternity looks for our future in its search for God.
Book Synopsis The Benefits of Belief by : Julián Melgosa

Book excerpt: When was the last time you went looking for a miracle cure or the Fountain of Youth hoping for something to diminish the signs of living on this sinful earth a little too long? Over the past two decades much research has been done on the effects of the religious life on our emotional, mental, and physical health. The documented results are astounding. Did you know that a regular prayer life, an attitude of gratitude and joy, or a spirit of forgiveness can dramatically impact your overall health? Even church attendance and Scripture reading are intimately connected to health, happiness, and longevity. In Benefits of Belief, Dr. Julian Melgosa uses research and personal stories to reveal the amazing benefits everyone can obtain from following the Lord s ways and living the Christian life. Jesus promises that anyone who follows Him will receive a hundredfold now (Mark 10:30). Dr. Melgosa believes it is reasonable to think that these blessings are not exclusively material, but are also related to the exercise of wisdom, resilience, and endurance that ultimately translate into good health, happiness, and well-being.
Book Synopsis In Search of a Better Belief System by : Walt F.J. Goodridge
Download or read book In Search of a Better Belief System written by Walt F.J. Goodridge and published by a company called W. This book was released on 2021-06-09 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a belief system? A belief system is a set of ideas about the physical, mental and spiritual components of life, and what you hold to be true about yourself, others, the world you live in, the reason for your existence, and why you are here. The reason for having a belief system—any belief system—is to help you navigate and negotiate your way effectively through life. Life is simpler provided you have the “correct” belief system. The correlation between having the correct belief system and with happiness and success in life is simple: People with a valid belief system—one that is in synch with reality—make better decisions. Without the correct assessment of reality, the world will not make sense, and you will make poor survival decisions. The process of education and maturing is (or at least should be) about developing an increasingly truthful, effective and “correct” belief system. Sadly, not all belief systems are created equal. Some belief systems are empowering while some belief systems are limiting. Some are so utterly out of synch and out of touch with reality that they lead to utter disappointment and failure. So, how do you determine which kind of belief system you have?

Download or read book In Search of Faith written by Howard W. Roberts and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore several of the stories of biblical characters who were seekers . . . The search by some of these people became watersheds for later seekers. For example, Abraham's search resulted in a clear understanding of radical monotheism. Ruth's seeking and searching challenged the notion that God's love and acceptance were tied to racial purity . . . Allow yourself to be a seeker as you read. May part of your seeking be to consider where your story and each of these stories intersect and may those intersections be places where you seek God and discover that already God is seeking you. --from the Preface In Search of Faith is an exploration of biblical characters who struggled to define their faith. Roberts help readers to identify with biblical characters; to discover kinship with seekers of another era; and to read about themselves in the stories. Some of the biblical characters discussed include Ruth, Jacob, Peter and Hosea. The stories of these biblical characters can be used in a sermon series or a course of study for a small group. In Search of Faith can be a guiding force in the daily lives of seekers by addressing the quest for personal meaning and the desire to belong in community.
