Book excerpt: Implementation of a Social Skills Curriculum to Reduce Behavioral Problems of African American Boys in Elementary Classroom Settings. Foster, Evaline L., 2004: Applied Dissertation, Nova Southeastern University, Fischler School ofEducation and Human Services. Peer Support Groups/Anger Management/Conflict Resolution/Social Skills/Bullying/Teacher Student Relationships This applied dissertation was designed to reduce the disruptive verbal and physical behaviors within the regular behavior enrichment classroom during the 2003-2004 school year. From August 2002-May 2003, 18 home suspensions, 25 in-school suspensions, and 85 office referrals due to extremely disruptive verbal and physical behaviors were recorded for students enrolled in the regular education behavior enrichment classroom. The purpose of this applied dissertation was to modify the negative behaviors of students into appropriate behaviors that would allow them to productively function academically, socially, and emotionally in the regular education classroom setting. The writer developed lesson plans and strategies to reduce the verbal and physical behaviors of students within the regular behavior enrichment classroom. Strategies taught included (a) facilitation of peer support groups and instruction, (b) modeling, (c) reinforcement of conflict resolution skills, (d) self-management techniques, (e) anger management techniques, and (f) social skills lessons. This applied dissertation also has the potential to provide other educators with the strategies necessary to maintain positive behaviors in the classroom. An analysis of data revealed a decreased number of verbal and physical antisocial behaviors in students. Through this implementation, students learned how to better self-manage their behaviors and use conflict resolution skills to solve controversial issues The presence of these factors helped to motivate students, improve behavior, increase cognitive developments levels, and strengthen parent/teacher relationships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “SUSPENDED FOR LIFE” takes an empirical look via real experiences at how Zero Tolerance Policies contained in the schools “Code of Conduct “disregards the rights of the student, especially students with disabilities. These policies are failing students everywhere including my residence of Syracuse New York. Statistically these unfair and biased “Zero Tolerance Policies” have led to very high suspension rates affecting mainly, inner-city students but overwhelmingly target students with IEPs, 504 Accommodations, the “untested but suspected LD student “ and the intellectually gifted student. Healthcare, Mental Health and Medical Privacy (HIPPA) now play large roles in school especially in decisions to suspend a student however coupled with a school districts Code of Conduct they have become a crucial aspect for suspension. Once you understand the link between a referral to “In-School-Suspension (ISSwarehousing students) or a referral for Out-of-School Suspension (OSS—push out of students) you will realize that in most cases suspension can lead directly to the prison industrial complex for our young women and men. Stopping this from happening to your student may depend on how well you are prepared to advocate for your child. We must not allow suspension to push out our children because ostensibly it may be ensuring them a life sentence of unemployment, crime, or even death. We say it starts at home with the parents, so if we can better understand our student’s rights and the rights we have as parents we can better prepare ourselves to advocate for our student and to hold the school district accountable for the Education of Our Children!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has changed in the area of school law since the first edition of The Educator’s Guide was published in 1986. This new ninth edition offers an authoritative source on all major dimensions of Texas school law through the 2017 legislative sessions. Intended for educators, school board members, interested attorneys, and taxpayers, the ninth edition explains what the law is and what the implications are for effective school operations. It is designed to help professional educators avoid expensive and time-consuming lawsuits by taking effective preventive action. It is an especially valuable resource for school law courses and staff development sessions. The ninth edition begins with a review of the legal structure of the Texas school system, incorporating recent innovative features such as charter schools and districts of innovation. Successive chapters address attendance, the instructional program, service to students with special needs, the rights of public school employees, the role of religion, student discipline, governmental transparency, privacy, parent rights, and the parameters of legal liability for schools and school personnel. The book includes discussion of major federal legislation, such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Every Student Succeeds Act. On the state level, the book incorporates new laws pertaining to cyberbullying and inappropriate relationships between students and employees. Key points are illustrated through case law, and a complete index of case citations is included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utilizing Dr. Martin Luther King's Beloved Community framework, activists will be empowered to create change and equity through fierce yet compassionate dialogue against racism and systematic white supremacy. Although committed to antiracism, many people struggle with confronting racist behavior. Difficult conversations are avoided or end in negativity, aggression, and even violence. How to Have Antiracist Conversations gives the tools to approach hard conversations with compassion and authenticity by embracing the 6 principles of Kingian Nonviolence: 1. Nonviolence is the way of life for courageous people 2. The Beloved Community framework is the future 3. Attack forces of evil, not persons doing evil 4. Accept suffering without retaliation for the sake of the cause 5. Avoid internal violence of spirit as well as external physical violence 6. The universe is on the side of justice Combined with an understanding of racist theory, readers can approach sensitive topics and address discriminatory behavior while minimizing harm. Drawing on her experience as a clinical psychologist and an Afro-Caribbean immigrant, Manning provides a model of dialogue, demonstrated with practical applications, which can be applied to a variety of situations where difference in power and privilege exist.
