Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Texas Landscape Project explores conservation and ecology in Texas by presenting a highly visual and deeply researched view of the widespread changes that have affected the state as its population and economy have boomed and as Texans have worked ever harder to safeguard its bountiful but limited natural resources. Covering the entire state, from Pineywoods bottomlands and Panhandle playas to Hill Country springs and Big Bend canyons, the project examines a host of familiar and not so familiar environmental issues. A companion volume to The Texas Legacy Project, this book tracks specific environmental changes that have occurred in Texas using more than 300 color maps, expertly crafted by cartographer Jonathan Ogren, and over 100 photographs that coalesce to fashion a broad portrait of the modern Texas landscape. The rich data, compiled by author David Todd, are presented in clearly written yet marvelously detailed text that gives historical context and contemporary statistics for environmental trends connected to the land, water, air, energy, and built world of the second-largest and second-most populated state in the nation. An engaging read for any environmentalist or conscientious citizen, The Texas Landscape Project provides a true sense of the grand scope of the Lone Star State and the high stakes of protecting it. Book excerpt: Change looms in Havana, Cuba's capital, a city electric with uncertainty yet cloaked in cliché, 90 miles from U.S. shores and off-limits to most Americans. Journalist Julia Cooke, who lived there at intervals over a period of five years, discovered a dynamic scene: baby-faced anarchists with Mohawks gelled with laundry soap, whiskey-drinking children of the elite, Santería trainees, pregnant prostitutes, university graduates planning to leave for the first country that will give them a visa. This last generation of Cubans raised under Fidel Castro animate life in a waning era of political stagnation as the rest of the world beckons: waiting out storms at rummy hurricane parties and attending raucous drag cabarets, planning ascendant music careers and black-market business ventures, trying to reconcile the undefined future with the urgent today. Eye-opening and politically prescient, The Other Side of Paradise offers a deep new understanding of a place that has so confounded and intrigued us.

High above the bustling streets of Dubai, in the world's tallest and most luxurious skyscraper, reside the gods and goddesses of the modern world. Since they emerged 14 billion years ago from a bus blaring a tune remarkably similar to the Mister Softee jingle, they've wreaked mischief and havoc on mankind. Unable to control their jealousies, the gods have splintered into several factions, led by the immortal enemies XOXO, Shanice, La Felina, Fast-Cooking Ali, and Mogul Magoo. Ike Karton, an unemployed butcher from New Jersey, is their current obsession. Ritualistically recited by a cast of drug-addled bards, The Sugar Frosted Nutsack is Ike's epic story. A raucous tale of gods and men confronting lust, ambition, death, and the eternal verities, it is a wildly fun, wickedly fast gambol through the unmapped corridors of the imagination.

Book excerpt: A historical novel based on the true story of the secret love affair at the heart of World War II amidst the Blitz in London. In 1942, Kay Summersby's life is changed forever when she is conscripted to drive General Eisenhower on his fact-finding visit to wartime London. Despite Eisenhower’s marriage to Mamie, the pair takes an immediate liking to each other, and he buys Kay a rare wartime luxury: a box of chocolates. So begins a tumultuous relationship that, against all military regulation, sees Kay traveling with Eisenhower on missions to far-flung places before the final assault on Nazi Germany. The general does dangerously little to conceal his affair with the woman widely known as “Ike’s shadow,” and in letters Mamie bemoans his new obsession with “Ireland.” That does not stop him from using his influence to grant Kay citizenship and rank in the U.S. Army, drawing her closer still when he returns to America. When officials discover Eisenhower’s plans to divorce from his wife, they threaten the fragile but passionate affair, and Kay is forced to take desperate measures to hold onto the man she loves . . . Based on the scandalous true story of General Eisenhower’s secret World War II love affair, Ike and Kay is a compelling story of love, duty, sacrifice, and heartbreak, set against the backdrop of the most tumultuous period of the twentieth century. Praise for Ike and Kay “Ike and Kay sets the backdrop for an important time in history . . . [and] brings to life controversial romances and characters that shaped world history during the twentieth century.” —Buzzfeed “This poignant novel recreates the war years and explores how a relationship can alter lives and history. Anyone interested in WWII history will savor this beautifully written love story that displays another side to Eisenhower and the war.” —RT Book Reviews “With keen eye for historical detail and strong narrative voice, MacManus has expertly and artfully painted an intimate, authentic portrait of love, duty, and sacrifice against the backdrop of the greatest events of the 20th century. Masterful!”—Pam Jenoff, New York Times–bestselling author of The Orphan’s Tale

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose for this 30-day bed-rest study was to investigate the effects of short-term, high-intensity isotonic and isokinetic exercise training on maintenance of aerobic work capacity (peak oxygen uptake); muscular strength and endurance; and orthostatic tolerance, equilibrium, and gait. Other data were collected on muscle atrophy, bone mineralization and density, endocrine analyses of vasoactivity and fluid-electrolyte balance, muscle intermediary metabolism, and performance and mood of the subjects. Nineteen men (32-42 yr) were allocated into three groups: no-exercise control (peak oxygen uptake and isokinetic tests once/wk, N = 5), isotonic exercise training (electronic Quinton ergometer, supine, N = 7), and isokinetic exercise training (electronic Lido ergometer, supine, N = 7). The exercise training regimens were conducted near peak levels for 30 min in the morning and 30 min in the afternoon 5 d/wk. The protocol consisted of a 7-d ambulatory control period during which the subjects equilibrated on the standardized diet, 30 d of 6 degrees head-down bed rest, and a final 4.5 d of ambulatory recovery. Their diet consisted of commonly available fresh and frozen foods; mean caloric consumption of 2,678 +/- SE 75 kcal/d (control), 2,833 +/- SE 82 kcal/day (isotonic), and 2,890 +/- SE 75 kcal/d (isokinetic) resulted in mean weight losses during bed rest of 1.01 kg, 0.85 kg, and 0.0 kg, respectively. The results indicated that: (1) The subjects maintained a relatively stable mood, high morale, and high esprit de corps throughout the study. Scores improved in nearly all performance and mood tests in almost all the subjects. Isotonic training, as opposed to isokinetic exercise training, was associated with decreasing levels of psychological tension, concentration, and motivation, and with improvement in the quality of sleep. (2) Peak oxygen uptake was maintained during bed rest with isotonic exercise training; it was not maintained as well with isokinetic ( -9.0%) or no-exercise ( -18.2%) training. If a 9% reduction in aerobic power is acceptable, isokinetic exercise training could be used for maintenance of strength, endurance, and the reduced aerobic capacity in astronauts during flight. (3) In general, there were few decreases in strength or endurance of arm or leg muscles during bed rest, in spite of reduction in size (atrophy) of some leg muscles. (4) There was no effect of isotonic or isokinetic exercise training on orthostasis, because tilt-table tolerances were reduced similarly from 42-53 min to 30-34 min in the three groups following bed rest. (5) Bed rest resulted in significant decreases of postural stability and self-selected step length, stride length, and walking velocity, which were not influenced by either exercise training regimen. Pre-bed-rest responses were restored by the fourth day of recovery.

His children are also shocked to learn that Lester has saved an enormous amount of money from his secret life as the exclusive television and radio repairman to a Long Island Mafia family. To stop the nurse from getting this surprise inheritance they must stop the marriage. They try every trick in the book: legal, religious, psychological and – in the case of one son – criminal. But they fail; or do they? Lester, it seems, has a few tricks up his own sleeve. Stroke of Luck is a dark comedy that explores the themes of greed and guilt, how to reunite families that have been driven apart, and how debilitating physical ailments do not necessarily mean diminished mental faculties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How changing the way we think about water and energy can secure the long-term sustainability of both precious resources Although it is widely understood that energy and water are the world's two most critical resources, their vital interconnections and vulnerabilities are less often recognized. This farsighted book offers a new, holistic way of thinking about energy and water--a big picture approach that reveals the interdependence of the two resources, identifies the seriousness of the challenges, and lays out an optimistic approach with an array of solutions to ensure the continuing sustainability of both. Michael Webber, a leader and teacher in the field of energy technology and policy, explains how energy and water supplies are linked and how problems in either can be crippling for the other. He shows that current population growth, economic growth, climate change, and short-sighted policies are likely to make things worse. Yet, Webber asserts, more integrated planning with long-term sustainability in mind can avert such a daunting future. Combining anecdotes and personal stories with insights into the latest science of energy and water, he identifies a hopeful path toward wise long-range water-energy decisions and a more reliable and abundant future for humanity.
