Download or read book Pedagogical Lexicography Today written by Fredric Thomas Dolezal and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this monograph, which has rich and evaluative annotations, is to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the issues in a major developing area of pedagogical lexicography. With this monograph researchers and students can have access to a set of 521 articles from a diverse array of publications, many in hard-to-find sources, that will prove valuable in reviewing the literature of the area. Because articles on language users and dictionary users are published in journals devoted to reading research, language acquisition, second language teaching, linguistics, and lexicography, most of the past research in the area has not shown critical awareness of this diffuse collection of research. The annotated bibliography found in this monograph supplies scholars in all the different fields of enquiry a critical guide to past and current work in pedagogical lexicography. Because this subfield of lexicography has developed in a variety of disciplines, it is difficult for researchers in any single discipline or sub-discipline to find relevant and important articles; this annotated bibliography not only provides a highly defined topical index based on a key-word analysis of the literature, but also annotations and commentary that provide the reader with a critical understanding of the important issues and debates in the development of the study of learners' dictionaries and dictionary users. The authors of this monograph have written the critical annotations in a manner that foregrounds the points of debate within the area which helps to define the concerns of the area.

Book excerpt: English Language Teaching (ELT), especially English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL), has been witnessing unprecedented changes in curriculum, teaching methodology, and the application of learning theories. This has created a demand for teachers who can teach English to learners of varied cultural, socio-economic and psychological backgrounds. The book, in its second edition, continues to discuss the modern trends, innovations, as well as the difficulties and challenges in teaching and learning ESL in a non-native context. The book, with contributions from many experts (each one specializing in a particular field) from countries such as UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, India, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, China, and Japan, provides new methods, strategies and application-oriented solutions to overcome the problems in a practical way. The book deals with all topics pertinent to English as a Second Language or English for the non-native speakers, and these are further reinforced by a large number of examples and quotations from different sources. The new edition comes along with thoroughly improvised chapters on Narrative Inquiry for Teacher Development (Chapter 13) and Mass Media, Language Attitudes and Language Interaction Phenomena (Chapter 23): to provide an insight on the innovative approaches in Teacher training and in classrooms, and new approaches and changing language dimensions in the world of media, and in general. What distinguishes the text is its focus on modern innovations and use of technology in ELT/CLT (Communicative Language Teaching). Book Synopsis The Phraseology of Administrative French by : Wendy J. Anderson
Download or read book The Phraseology of Administrative French written by Wendy J. Anderson and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2006 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French administrative language of the European Union is an emerging discourse: it is only fifty years old, and has its origins in the French administrative register of the middle of the twentieth century, but it is also a unique contact situation in which translation has always played a pivotal role. Using the methodology of corpus linguistics, and a specially compiled corpus of texts, covering a range of genres, this book describes the current discourse of EU French from the perspective of phraseology and collocational patterning, and in particular in comparison with its French national counterpart. Corpus methodology and an inclusive notion of phraseology, embracing typical formulae, locutions, and patterning around keywords, reveal subtleties and patterns which otherwise remain hidden, and point to a discourse of EU French whose novel context of production has led it to be phraseologically conservative, compared with the administrative French of France

Book Synopsis English Pronunciation Models by : Katarzyna Dziubalska-Kołaczyk
Download or read book English Pronunciation Models written by Katarzyna Dziubalska-Kołaczyk and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The choice of a pronunciation model for the 21st century learner has become a major issue of debate among applied linguists concerned with teaching English. The standard pronunciation models - Received Pronunciation and General American - have recently been confronted with a new proposal of a Lingua Franca Core (LFC) or English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), put forward as a didactic priority in teaching English pronunciation to foreigners. This volume, which includes selected contributions from the Poznań Linguistic Meetings of 2003 and 2004, does not intend to present yet another model, but sets out to place the teaching and learning of English pronunciation in the context of the 21st century. As the needs of English users are clearly changing fast in the globalizing world, the question is to what extent, if at all, models of pronunciation have been able to keep up with them, and whether they in fact should do so. Thus, key issues in the integration of pronunciation into English as L2 curricula are explored.
Book Synopsis Collocations in a Learner Corpus by : Nadja Nesselhauf
Download or read book Collocations in a Learner Corpus written by Nadja Nesselhauf and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collocations are both pervasive in language and difficult for language learners, even at an advanced level. In this book, these difficulties are for the first time comprehensively investigated. On the basis of a learner corpus, idiosyncratic collocation use by learners is uncovered, the building material of learner collocations examined, and the factors that contribute to the difficulty of certain groups of collocations identified. An extensive discussion of the implications of the results for the foreign language classroom is also presented, and the contentious issue of the relation of corpus linguistic research and language teaching is thus extended to learner corpus analysis.

Book Synopsis User-friendliness of verb syntax in pedagogical dictionaries of English by : Anna Dziemianko
Download or read book User-friendliness of verb syntax in pedagogical dictionaries of English written by Anna Dziemianko and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-02-14 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study examines the user-friendliness of sources of verb syntax in monolingual English learners' dictionaries. It is both theoretical and empirical in nature. The theoretical part is based on an analysis of consecutive editions of major pedagogical dictionaries of English in paper form. The empirical part relies on statistical analyses of numerical data yielded by comprehensive research, which was based, in the main, on the experimental method. In the experiment, the user-friendliness of sources of verb syntax in learners' dictionaries was measured by the frequency with which the properly identified and useful syntactic information was located in particular entry components. The sources of syntactic information in the entries compiled especially for the purpose of the experiment were the ones which featured in the major pedagogical dictionaries most recent at the time of the study. 606 subjects, divided into two groups of different proficiency in English, underlined in the manipulated entries the syntactic information which they considered helpful in answering multiple choice questions. The most user-friendly solutions, both coded and uncoded ones, are recommended in the final part of the book.
