Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seldom-recalled Creek War of 1813-1814 and its extension, the First Seminole War of 1818, had significant consequences for the growth of the United States. Beginning as a civil war between Muscogee factions, the struggle escalated into a war between the Moscogees and the United States after insurgent Red Sticks massacred over 250 whites and mixed-bloods at Fort Mims on the Alabama River on August 30, 1813—the worst frontier massacre in U.S. history. After seven months of bloody fighting, U.S. forces inflicted a devastating defeat on the Red Sticks at Horseshoe Bend on the Tallapoosa River on March 27, 1814—the most disastrous defeat ever suffered by Native Americans. The defeat of the Muscogees (Creeks), the only serious impediments to U.S. westward expansion, opened millions of acres of land to the white settlers and firmly established the Cotton Kingdom and slavery in the Deep South. For southeastern Native Americans, the war resulted in the destruction of their civilization and forced removal west of the Mississippi: The Trail of Tears. O'Brien presents both the American and Native American perspectives of this important chapter of U.S. history. He also examines the roles of the neighboring tribes and African Americans who lived in the Muscogee nation.

In a world full of struggle, we must take care that difficult circumstances do not feed a bitter spirit within us. In this honest and hopeful book, pastor and counselor Stephen Viars shows you how to avoid the pitfalls of a bitter heart as you walk through our fallen world. When we learn to process bitterness biblically and effectively, we can move from life's greatest hurts to a life filled with joy.

Book excerpt: How do you feel about how you feel? Our emotions are complex. Some of us seem able to ignore our feelings, while others feel controlled by them. But most of us would admit that we don't always know what to do with how we feel. The Bible teaches us that our emotions are an indispensable part of what makes us human—and play a crucial role in our relationships with God and others. Exploring how God designed emotions for our good, this book shows us how to properly engage with our emotions—even the more difficult ones like fear, anger, shame, guilt, and sorrow—so we can better understand what they reveal about our hearts and handle them wisely in everyday moments.

Book excerpt: The award-winning author of To Seduce a Texan thrills readers once again with the unforgettable story of a love as wild and free as the American West. A BATTLE OF WILLS Spirited heiress Libbie Winters is horrified to find herself in the midst of an Apache rebellion—and amazed to discover that her captor, a scout named Cougar, is the same man who offered her his prized Apache Tears necklace a year before. And though she is promised in marriage to a vengeful cavalry officer, Libbie cannot forget her powerful attraction to the fearless Apache hero. A BLAZE OF PASSION Believing she has rejected his gift, Cougar’s heart is hardened toward the haughty white girl he now holds for ransom. Yet he cannot deny the desire this flame-haired beauty arouses in him, or the love he longs to give her. He knows it is impossible to hold the fiery woman whose spirit is as free as his own—unless Libbie makes the dangerous choice to embrace the passion burning between them . . . Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author and Reviewers' Choice Award-winner Laurie McBain has sold more than 11 million copies of her romances around the world with lush, epic storytelling that has made her a favorite among generations of readers. She has sworn never to love. To many, she has a perfect life-freedom to travel the world, expensive gifts from wealthy men. But consummate actress though she is, Mara Flynn can never make herself believe the passion is real. One more job. That's all she needs to ensure her family's financial future. And California is just teeming with gold. There, her daring impersonation will fool everyone...except one man. He has sworn never to forgive. Mara didn't plan for Nicholas Chantale, though. He has hunted her from the steamy streets of New Orleans all the way to the blinding brilliance of California gold country, only to have his dreams of vengeance crushed when he meets her in the flesh. For though he was sworn to kill her, she was the love he would die for. Praise for Laurie McBain: "Ms. McBain's flare for the romantic intermingled with suspense will keep the reader riveted to the story until the last page." -Affaire de Coeur "Vivid sense of description, colorful characters...I found myself happily lost in the magnificence of the storytelling." -Los Angeles Herald Examiner "Well-crafted and wonderfully romantic. Readers are rewarded with teeming atmosphere." -RT Book Reviews
