Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Life in Labrador In a book, sketch, or series of sketches, one of the last things to be written - and often one of the last to be printed - is the introduction. Why, then, it should be so invariably placed first is a question for the causalist. I shall vary the usual proceedings in such cases, and, writing my introduction last, shall both print and place it last. The subject of the present and last number of Bird Life in Labrador is very briefly stated. In 1875, the writer made a Summer excursion to Labrador, remaining there two months, traveling chiefly within a radius of sixty miles southwest and ten miles northeast of Bonne Esperance. In 1880, he visited the coast in September and remained until the following September, calling at nearly every harbor of importance from Mingan to Red Bay. In 1882, a third exploring party continued the work of the two previous trips, as far as Fox Harbor, St. Lewis Sound. Other trips to portions of these same grounds have been made, and much new material gained, but not beyond St. Lewis Sound, as above mentioned. When the sketches that have just appeared in the American Field were written, after returning from the trip in 1882, I had never seen any account whatever of the birds of this region, saving from occasional glimpses in odd volumes of the works of Audubon, and not all of these. I cannot, therefore, be charged with literary piracy, so often urged upon writers of any particular subject or region. To prove the above fact, I am prepared to take upon me the most solemn obligation that can be required of any author. I make this statement simply as a precautionary measure of self-protection. Book excerpt: THE Labrador trip, long contemplated, was made with the usual object, that of procuring birds and making the drawings of them for the continuation of the "Birds of America," the publication of which was being carried on by the Havells, under the supervision of Victor, the elder son, who was in London at this time. To him Audubon writes from Eastport, Maine, under date of May 31, 1833:

Book excerpt: The Birds of America. One man's dream to illustrate and publish a work depicting all the birds of North America. Midway through the nearly twelve-year project, the French-American painter and naturalist John James Audubon was beset by obstacles and began to doubt if he could complete it. He still needed to find and paint scores of additional species before he could lay aside his brush. The uncharted shores of Labrador beckoned with rumors of avian rarities, but an expedition to the north would be a severe trial. It was a desolate land, and its brief summer would afford him little time to accomplish his mission. At the age of forty-eight, he questioned how much longer he could maintain the punishing pace his project demanded. His wife, Lucy, feared for his health. Audubon was undaunted. However, as he sailed for Labrador in early June, developments abroad threatened to undo his work. Robert Havell Jr., the brilliant London engraver who had brought Audubon's vision to the page, was ready to quit. At the same time, the naturalist's harshest critic in England had just unleashed an attack on him in Britain's foremost natural-history journal. Half a world away, Audubon was unable to respond.Through the lens of this heretofore unwritten tale, Audubon scholar Peter B. Logan offers a beautifully textured narrative for historians and Audubon lovers. Meticulously researched, using many previously unknown sources, this groundbreaking book portrays the panoramic sweep of Audubon's remarkable life, from his illegitimate birth through his aimless early years as a frontier storekeeper to his decision to launch a daring enterprise from which he would emerge as America's greatest naturalist. At the heart of this saga lies the Labrador expedition. With the reader alongside during the most critical point in his career, Audubon is revealed as his closest friends knew him--dynamic, gregarious, utterly indomitable, while simultaneously insecure, egotistical, and not beyond stretching the truth when it suited him. This compelling biography rewrites the unforgettable story of the iconic American woodsman, whose passion produced an enduring monument to natural history that remains unmatched.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "John James Audubon's paintings of birds are as familiar as they are beautiful. But even among his admirers, many may be surprised to learn that Audubon was a gifted writer. In this one-of-a-kind anthology, Christoph Irmscher and Richard J. King have curated a collection of Audubon's coastal and sea writing, which represent Audubon's most compelling and evocative depictions of the natural world and early nineteenth-century American life. The collection is geographically diverse, bringing to light the variety of people and wildlife Audubon met or observed, pulling from the massive Ornithological Biography (1831-1839) as well as the "Autobiography" and journals. The editors supplement the selections with an instructive introduction and powerful coda, section headnotes, explanatory notes, and an appendix linking Audubon's species to current taxonomy and geographic ranges. The book is lavishly illustrated as well. There is much more in Audubon at Sea than descriptions of birds: we have stories of life aboard ship, of travel in early America and Audubon's work habits, the origins of iconic paintings, and, in the end, the carefully drawn commentary on a flawed and, at best, ambiguous hero"--
