Book Synopsis Columbia College by : Paulina Ann Batterson
Download or read book Columbia College written by Paulina Ann Batterson and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 1260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Columbia College, formerly known as Christian College, was founded in 1851 in the small frontier town of Columbia, Missouri. Touted as the first women's college west of the Mississippi River, Columbia College emerged as virtually a sister college to the University of Missouri, sharing leadership, faculty, and curriculum. Covering each of the school's presidential administrations, Columbia College examines all aspects of the college--academic, administrative, financial, athletic, and student life. Particular emphasis is placed on the role various individuals played over the years. Although created through the zealous efforts of progressive leaders of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the college was bound by its charter to be nondenominational--an issue that sometimes led to passionate sectarian quarrels within the fledgling institution. Despite pre-Civil War political differences, denominational rivalries, and personality clashes, the college struggled to survive. Through 150 years of continuity and change, Columbia College has tenaciously upheld its liberal-arts tradition as a teaching-centered institution, seeking innovative ways to broaden educational horizons and meet the needs of new generations. From the sheltered environment of Christian Female College, Columbia College has evolved into a modern coeducational institution with twenty-four military and civilian extended campuses across the United States and in Puerto Rico and a thriving evening campus that specializes in adult education. Columbia College will be of great interest to Columbia College alumni, as well as to anyone with an interest in liberal arts and adult education. Those wishing to preserve the endangered tradition of the small private college will find the Columbia College experience not only an inspiration, but also a lesson in creativity, loyalty, and dedication.

Download or read book Fernando Wood written by Jerome Mushkat and published by Kent State University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fernando Wood was one of the most controversial figures of nineteenth-century America. His fellow New Yorkers either respected or despised him, depending whether they considered his policies beneficial or harmful to their interests. The character revealed herein possessed some admirable qualities; high intelligence, sharp analytic skills, great capacity for hard work, and a clear talent to set his executive agenda. But equally evident are Wood's less admirable qualities; ruthless business practices, shoddy personal ethics, corrupt politics, dictatorial tendencies. What emerges is the story of a very complex person: a successful businessman, consummate politician, resourceful three-time may of New York City, and nine-term congressman, beneath which lurked mean and self-destructive tendencies. Take as a whole, Wood's colorful career was a unique microcosm of American history both during and after his lifetime. His business achievements mirrored popular beliefs in upward mobility. And Wood's mayoralty held a promise of revitalizing municipal government, giving it a social conscience, and setting new standards for the future. Despite his shortcomings, Fernando Wood played a major but unappreciated role in the urban and political history of time.
Book Synopsis Wilmington, North Carolina, to 1861 by : Alan D. Watson
Download or read book Wilmington, North Carolina, to 1861 written by Alan D. Watson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2003-01-16 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of America's thirteen original colonies, North Carolina was one of the most rural, its urban population miniscule and its maritime commerce severely limited--except in the town of Wilmington. Prior to the Civil War, the coastal town was North Carolina's largest urban area and principal seaport, with shipping as the mainstay of the local economy. Wilmington indeed was a singular place in colonial and antebellum North Carolina. This book presents the history of Wilmington from its founding and development to the eve of the Civil War. Part I traces Wilmington's history from the incorporation of the town in 1739-40 to 1789, when North Carolina joined the newly formed United States of America. This section focuses on the confused and disputed origins of Wilmington, life in a colonial urban setting, the growing importance of the port, and town governance. Part II expands upon the preceding topics for the years 1789 to 1861. It also examines the economic development of the port, the wide variety of social activities, the growth of the African American population, and Wilmington's role in state and national politics.
Download or read book Joseph Howe written by Murray Beck and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1983-10-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Beck shows how, in Churchillian fashion, the final resolution was preceded by a series of setbacks and disappointments in Howe's public life. These were the result of a bold colonization scheme encompassing an inter-colonial railway between Halifax and Quebec; a quixotic mission of recruitment in the United States for the British armies in the Crimea; the embattled leasdership of an unstable provincial administration in the early 1860s; and the hard-fought campaign to prevent passage of the British North America Act. Disillusioned by the indifference of British politician to his long-standing advocacy of a refurbished British Empire in whose government colonial leaders could share, Howe turned his energies to making the new Canadian federation work. A whole-hearted supporter of Confederation in his later years, Howe displayed an irrepressible vitality that Professor Beck sees as the trademark of the man.
