Book Synopsis The Politics of the Impure by : Joke Brouwer
Download or read book The Politics of the Impure written by Joke Brouwer and published by V2_ publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: It is crucial to understand that our progression through the twentieth century towards our contemporary global Crystal Palace (Peter Sloterdijk) of purity and transparency has been constantly accompanied by an almost physical desire for the pure, not just Mondrian's crystalline structures, but also the addictive taste of white sugar and white bread. This book investigates this urge for the pure, but also advocates a much deeper need for the impure, not to reinstate a new organicism, one more back-to-nature movement, but to trace that progression to a point where all modernist values reverse, where technology becomes an agent for the impure and the imperfect. Technology, long an agent for homogeneity and purity, is now turning into one for heterogeneity and global contingency.

Book excerpt: Colette herself considered The Pure and the Impure her best book, "the nearest I shall ever come to writing an autobiography." This guided tour of the erotic netherworld with which Colette was so intimately acquainted begins in the darkness and languor of a fashionable opium den. It continues as a series of unforgettable encounters with men and, especially, women whose lives have been improbably and yet permanently transfigured by the strange power of desire. Lucid and lyrical, The Pure and the Impure stands out as one of modern literature's subtlest reckonings not only with the varieties of sexual experience, but with the always unlikely nature of love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the small North Carolina mountain town of Eli was flooded in the early 1940s to make way for a TVA dam and lake, the homes and businesses were buried beneath the water—but buildings weren’t the only things buried. There are hushed stories of a spirit that lingers beneath the murky waters, hiding a dark secret. Judy and her husband Craig journey to the area to care for her ailing adopted grandfather. The elderly man reveals some interesting anecdotes about his own life in Eli, but the sharing of this information is more than mere storytelling. Judy and Craig are now entangled in a sinister plot, set in motion seventy-five years earlier by an evil presence and complicit town residents. Seeking truth, Judy and Craig begin investigating, but their poking around does not go unnoticed. Their lives are in danger as Judy uncovers past nefarious plots while moving closer and closer to the answers she seeks. This is a battle of good versus evil, influenced by both Appalachian and Cherokee myth, as four time periods coalesce to reveal a terrible truth.
Book Synopsis Impure Cultures by : Daniel Lee Kleinman
Download or read book Impure Cultures written by Daniel Lee Kleinman and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2003-10-15 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are the worlds of university biology and commerce blurring? Many university leaders see the amalgamation of academic and commercial cultures as crucial to the future vitality of higher education in the United States. In Impure Cultures, Daniel Lee Kleinman questions the effect of this blending on the character of academic science. Using data he gathered as an ethnographic observer in a plant pathology lab at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Kleinman examines the infinite and inescapable influence of the commercial world on biology in academia today. Contrary to much of the existing literature and common policy practices, he argues that the direct and explicit relations between university scientists and industrial concerns are not the gravest threat to academic research. Rather, Kleinman points to the less direct, but more deeply-rooted effects of commercial factors on the practice of university biology. He shows that to truly understand research done at universities today, it is first necessary to explore the systematic, pervasive, and indirect effects of the commercial world on contemporary academic practice.
Book Synopsis Chemistry: The Impure Science (2nd Edition) by : Jonathan Simon
Download or read book Chemistry: The Impure Science (2nd Edition) written by Jonathan Simon and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012-06-26 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you associate with chemistry? Explosions, innovative materials, plastics, pollution? The public's confused and contradictory conception of chemistry as basic science, industrial producer and polluter contributes to what we present in this book as chemistry's image as an impure science. Historically, chemistry has always been viewed as impure both in terms of its academic status and its role in transforming modern society. While exploring the history of this science we argue for a characteristic philosophical approach that distinguishes chemistry from physics. This reflection leads us to a philosophical stance that we characterise as operational realism. In this new expanded edition we delve deeper into the questions of properties and potentials that are so important for this philosophy that is based on the manipulation of matter rather than the construction of theories./a

Download or read book Impure Migration written by Mir Yarfitz and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-04 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impure Migration investigates the period from the 1890s until the 1930s, when prostitution was a legal institution in Argentina and the international community knew its capital city Buenos Aires as the center of the sex industry. At the same time, pogroms and anti-Semitic discrimination left thousands of Eastern European Jewish people displaced, without the resources required to immigrate. For many Jewish women, participation in prostitution was one of very few ways they could escape the limited options in their home countries, and Jewish men facilitate their transit and the organization of their work and social lives. Instead of marginalizing this story or reading it as a degrading chapter in Latin American Jewish history, Impure Migration interrogates a complicated social landscape to reveal that sex work is in fact a critical part of the histories of migration, labor, race, and sexuality.

Book Synopsis Shakespeare and Impure Aesthetics by : Hugh Grady
Download or read book Shakespeare and Impure Aesthetics written by Hugh Grady and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-13 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare and Impure Aesthetics explores ideas about art implicit in Shakespeare's plays and defines specific Shakespearean aesthetic practices in his use of desire, death and mourning as resources for art. Hugh Grady draws on a tradition of aesthetic theorists who understand art as always formed in a specific historical moment but as also distanced from its context through its form and Utopian projections. Grady sees A Midsummer Night's Dream, Timon of Athens, Hamlet, and Romeo and Juliet as displaying these qualities, showing aesthetic theory's usefulness for close readings of the plays. The book argues that such social-minded 'impure aesthetics' can revitalize the political impulses of the new historicism while opening up a new aesthetic dimension in the current discussion of Shakespeare.
Book Synopsis IMPURE: MENSTRUATION OR MENTALITY by : ISHANI BHATTACHARYA
Download or read book IMPURE: MENSTRUATION OR MENTALITY written by ISHANI BHATTACHARYA and published by JEC PUBLICATION. This book was released on with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When women and men unite they become powerful procreators. However, since menstruation is majorly endured and experienced by women, some men though keep themselves close to the process but the majority distance themselves from discussion and giving care to the women.Procreation is the reality of humankind but we choose not to speak about it and the process related to it yet continues. Now, here is the thing, the majority of men have a fragmented understanding of menstruation. As a result, they see it from the lenses of taboo and not a natural process. There is a constant mention of men here, but let’s change the track and switch to women. What do you think, because women menstruate that allows them to have a balanced perspective about periods? Absolutely, not. Even in this information age, there are many women who think a pack of sanitary napkins should be wrapped in the stories of the newspaper so that people don't read the hidden story. There are women who choose not to discuss this natural phenomenon thinking this is a sex-related concept which can’t be shared. And they just don't put a period here. They go further to preach the same to their sons and daughters. So here is the thing only a few women choose to discuss this phenomenon. And that is why we are living in this illusive reality that blood from the vagina is impure. Menstruation is less of a taboo and more of a confusion. Therefore, it needs more and more discussion. And that is why this anthology, Impure: Menstruation and Mentality was created so that the little section of men and women come up and share their perspectives on Menstruation .
Book Synopsis Christianity and Heavy Metal as Impure Sacred within the Secular West by : Jason Lief
Download or read book Christianity and Heavy Metal as Impure Sacred within the Secular West written by Jason Lief and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-06-13 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the symbolic connections between Christianity and Heavy Metal music in the context of the secular West. Heavy Metal uses symbols and imagery taken from Christianity, even if the purpose is to critique religion. This usage creates a positive connection with an interpretation of Christianity as a form of cultural critique. Given that Metal and Christianity are associated with Western culture, this book explores how Christianity and Heavy Metal function within the context of secularity as a form of ideological critique. Using the ideas of Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, and Charles Taylor as a starting point, this book explores the religious nature of secularism in the West interpreted in the immanent processes of politics and economics. In this connect, both Christianity and Heavy Metal provide a cultural critique through images of death, the grotesque, and sacrifice. By bringing this religious interpretation of secularism into conversation with the ideas of Georges Batailles, Slavoj Žižek, and Jürgen Moltmann, this book will demonstrate the positive relationship between Christianity and Heavy Metal.
