Book excerpt: NMSA's position paper This We Believe has come to be recognized as the best articulation of the middle school concept, the accepted standard. But inevitably, a position paper speaks in visionary generalizations; to move these ideals into actual practice is a very demanding task, but one that has to be undertaken if needed and fundamental changes are to be made. This resource will help in the process. Altogether This We Believe in Action is a comprehensive resource, the tool we have been waiting for to assist middle level schools in implementing the characteristics of This We Believe. Every middle school should have a copy, not just to be read, but to use in site-based professional development activities. --Publisher description.

Book Synopsis Middle Grades Curriculum by : Kathleen Roney

Book excerpt: High stakes testing, standards, and accountability politics is taking us away from the importance of the affective domain in curriculum development. This critical learning domain is often an unrecognized and infrequently considered topic in the literature. Through this book we extend the current knowledge base by addressing a curriculum model developed in the 1980s. We add a 2012 knowledge base as we delineate the role of self-perceptions in school-related learning, how middle level curriculum affects self-perceptions, and the type of curriculum planning which enhances self-perceptions and improves learning in the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. The combination of sound psychological principles and practical teaching and curriculum suggestions with an empirical basis makes the book attractive to both higher education and local school professional libraries. In the former it will serve as the primary text in graduate and advanced undergraduate middle level education programs and practices courses. It might also be a primary text in courses or workshops in affective education or other experiences which emphasize affective, values, and self-concept. It also has potential as a supplementary text in undergraduate educational psychology courses. At the in-service level this book could be used as a workshop resource or as a professional reference for middle level teachers, administrators, curriculum workers, and supervisors. Our interest in young adolescents and their school setting coincides with the fourth edition of This We Believe (NMSA, 2010). The self-enhancing school is characterized by “from-to” statements; for example, “from” avoiding parents “to” working with parents. Using theory and research we discuss the costs of staying in the “from” position and the benefits derived from moving to the “to” position. By combining educational psychology and curriculum development we make a unique contribution to middle grades curriculum developers.

Book Synopsis Middle School Matters by : Phyllis L. Fagell
Download or read book Middle School Matters written by Phyllis L. Fagell and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A counselor and popular Washington Post contributor offers a new take on grades 6-8 as a distinct developmental phase--and the perfect time to set up kids to thrive. Middle school is its own important, distinct territory, and yet it's either written off as an uncomfortable rite of passage or lumped in with other developmental phases. Based on her many years working in schools, professional counselor Phyllis Fagell sees these years instead as a critical stage that parents can't afford to ignore (and though "middle school" includes different grades in various regions, Fagell maintains that the ages make more of a difference than the setting). Though the transition from childhood to adolescence can be tough for kids, this time of rapid physical, intellectual, moral, social, and emotional change is a unique opportunity to proactively build character and confidence. Fagell helps parents use the middle school years as a low-stakes training ground to teach kids the key skills they'll need to thrive now and in the future, including making good friend choices, negotiating conflict, regulating their own emotions, be their own advocates, and more. To answer parents' most common questions and struggles with middle school-aged children, Fagell combines her professional and personal expertise with stories and advice from prominent psychologists, doctors, parents, educators, school professionals, and middle schoolers themselves.

Book Synopsis Improving Middle School Instruction by : Judy Reinhartz

Book excerpt: This booklet reviews research on the middle school environment, the characteristics of the middle school student, and the factors involved in teaching effectively at the middle school level, and then proposes a method that middle school teachers can use for analyzing their own classroom behavior and their instructional options. The booklet's first chapter explains the differences between the middle school and the more traditional junior high school. Chapter 2 focuses on the cognitive, moral, and physical development that so drastically alters the attitudes, behaviors, and needs of middle school students. Chapter 3 reviews sets of teacher variables that three major research studies have associated with effective teaching. One of these sets of process variables is examined in greater detail in chapter 4, with particular reference to middle school instruction. The fifth chapter proposes a four-step method of self-assessment for teachers, involving self-diagnosis by teachers; feedback from supervisors, students, and colleagues; the formulation of recommendations for change; and implementation of the changes. Chapter 6 follows a hypothetical teacher through the self-assessment process. Appendixes include instruments from the Self-Assessment System and other evaluation programs. A 67-item bibliography is also provided. (PGD)
