Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to bring more awareness to the needs of foster youth who identify as transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC). TGNC youth in foster care experience challenges due to their gender identity. This inductive exploratory qualitative study will analyze secondary data collected from a previous study whose participants consisted of twenty-five former Los Angeles County foster youth who self-identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, & Queer (LGBTQ). For the purpose of this study, a subset of seven youth who identify TGNC was analyzed. Several themes utilizing thematic analysis were identified to include adult relationships, social connectedness, and resilience. Results showed that social connectedness to gender affirming persons helped promote resilience in these youth. This study hopes that by highlighting the experiences of TGNC youth while in foster care, we can learn how to better serve this population.
