Book excerpt: Following on its previous report on the management and control of hospital acquired infections in the NHS (HCP 230, session 1999-00, ISBN 0105566659) published in February 2000, this report by the National Audit Office examines: the extent of progress made towards implementation of good practice recommendations; whether there have been any discernible changes in patient outcomes; and how other countries are addressing these issues. Findings include that implementation and compliance has been patchy, with notable progress at trust level in the strategic prioritisation of infection control processes, although wider factors continue to impede good practice, including the lack of sufficient information on the extent and costs of hospital acquired infections. Further action is required using a range of approaches to change staff behaviour to reduce risks, and a number of recommendations are made to the Department of Health, the Healthcare Commission and NHS trusts which aim to help overcome identified constraints.

It looks at three main areas: the extent and impact of hospital acquired infection; improving knowledge of and compliance with good infection control practice; improving infection control systems and management processes. The conclusion is that progress has been patchy, with a lack of urgency on several key issues such as ward cleanliness and hand hygiene.
