Book excerpt: A need exists for increased human trafficking education among emergency department staff to raise clinician awareness of human trafficking and their ability to treat and provide appropriate community resources to this vulnerable population. This DNP project aimed to improve human trafficking education among clinicians at Intermountain Medical Center's Emergency Department (ED) by implementing an educational module to increase clinician knowledge of human trafficking laws, definitions, prevalence, victim identification, treatment, and community resources. Department clinicians completed pre- and post-intervention surveys to assess sociodemographic information and confidence in knowledge about human trafficking. These surveys contained Likert-style scale responses, and quantitative data were collected during the module intervention and evaluation. Data analysis showed increased clinician confidence at the 4-week mark regarding knowledge of human trafficking laws, definitions, prevalence, victim identification and treatment, and referral of community and social resources. Data analysis from the second post- survey at the 8-week mark showed a slight decrease in clinician confidence in the ability to treat victims and a slight decrease in knowledge of the community and social resources. Outcomes show that human trafficking education did increase but saw a slight decrease in confidence in victim identification and community resources at the 8- week mark. Further investigation will need to be done to ensure long-term content retention. The educational module can be adapted and updated to fit current needs. Project findings support the continued use of the education module at Intermountain Medical Center's ED.

Gaps in the literature and areas for further research are presented with implications for health care practice and policy. Without purposeful and targeted human trafficking identification interventions in the health care setting, victims will continue to go unrecognized.

Women and children are trafficked within and between countries at an alarming rate and it has become a prime agenda for the Bush Administration and the Department of State to call for action and solutions to. This thesis opens with a defining of this problem and overview of the scope of the problem on a global scale. It reviews social, political and economic factors which play a role. It describes laws enacted and police responses and describes what research has been conducted to get a grasp of what is involved and what might be done. This author decided to explore factors that other researchers have suggested are compelling factors in victimization. This research hypothesis for this thesis explores the economic factors. Comparisons are made between countries of origin where victims originate from and destination countries where they are trafficked to. The research findings reveal some significant differences in economic factors exist between the origin and destination countries. The findings lend support in why victims feel compelled to seek entrance to countries like the U.S. and Australia or U.K. and might be easy prey for traffickers. This author makes it clear that the research here does not mean that this is why they are victimized. Further research with victim surveys and victim interviews will be helpful. Furthermore, it will be valuable to conduct more exploration of the economic factors, but more accurate data sources are needed. It is recommended that countries attempt to establish more standardized criteria for reporting economic data.

Nurse practitioners (NP) often unknowingly come into contact with victims of HT, however, few NP’s have had formal education on the topic and may fail to recognize signs and risk factors. The purpose of this study was to initiate HT training for NP students. Methods: A quality improvement (QI) initiative for a university college of nursing (CON) utilizing a prospective, observational, descriptive, cohort design. A plan-do-study-act (PDSA) methodology was implemented. A written case study given before an educational session and an objective structured clinical exam (OSCE) after the educational session involving a victim of HT were evaluated. Results: Grading rubrics for the pre-education written case study were compared to the grading rubrics of the post-education OSCE’s. A paired samples t-test found statistical significance (pImplications: Including HT education in an NP curriculum assisted students to become aware of and recognize signs and indicators of HT. Written case studies and use of an OSCE were an effective means for evaluating learning. As NP’s graduate and begin to practice, further study on their awareness, ability to recognize risk factors and indicators, and providing assistance to victims of HT is recommended.

Book excerpt: BACKGROUND: Human trafficking victims commonly interact with health care professionals during their time of trafficking, and most are not identified as a victim. These interactions with health care provide an optimal time for identification, but only if the health care professionals are educated on clinical indicators, treatment options, and post-trafficking referrals. Currently, evidence suggests that the majority of health care professionals have never received formal training on how to identify, treat or assist a human trafficking victim that would present to a health care facility. PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematized review is to understand the current educational and training programs on human trafficking that are available for health care professionals, and applicable to nursing. Additionally, this review will explore the effectiveness of these training and educational resources and offer recommendations specifically for the discipline of nursing. METHODS: A systematized review of the literature was conducted in September 2017 using the PubMed and CINAHL databases with the search terms human trafficking [MeSH] AND education OR human trafficking [MeSH] AND training. RESULTS: A wide variety of training modalities are available to health care professionals with similar themes of educational content. Training came in the form of online videos, voiceover presentations, online toolkits, education during departmental meetings, or presentations during Grand Rounds. Content of these programs most commonly included information on identification, clinical presentation, referral options, long-term consequences, and treatment. None of these programs were assessed for efficacy or validity, but some programs reported increases in self-rated knowledge and confidence. DISCUSSION: In recent years, there have been considerable improvements in the quality and number of educational/training programs on human trafficking available for health care professionals. The modalities of current programs are diverse and many do not have metrics or objective measurements to evaluate efficacy. Given the important role of the nurse in victim identification, continued improvements in these educational programs could have a meaningful impact on patient outcomes.

There is also a growing body of research on human trafficking, but most of it has focused on trying to show that human trafficking is a problem. Wilson and Dalton explore the extent and characteristics of concrete cases of human trafficking in Columbus and Toledo, Ohio, as well as the awareness of and response to the problem by the justice systems and social service provider communities in the two cities. The authors summarize their content analysis of newspaper accounts as well as key respondent interviews that they conducted with criminal justice officials and social service providers in each site. These identified several cases of juvenile sex trafficking and forced prostitution in Toledo, as well as a smaller trafficking market centered on the forced labor of noncitizens in Columbus. Wilson and Dalton compare the two cities' considerably different responses to human trafficking, and conclude with suggestions on how to raise awareness about human trafficking and improve the responses of the criminal justice system, the juvenile justice system, and social services to the problem.
