Book Synopsis Generalization in feedforward neural networks by : Darrell Whitley
Download or read book Generalization in feedforward neural networks written by Darrell Whitley and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "One of the important characteristics of feed forward neural networks is their ability to generalize the input/output behavior of functions based on a set of training exemplars. Yet many aspects of the problem of improving generalization in feed forward neural networks has [sic] not been studied well. In this paper we address the importance of this problem and propose two techniques to improve generalization. They are: 1) proper selection of the training ensemble, and 2) a partitioned learning strategy. These techniques are applied to a complex 2-D classification problem. We also evaluate network generalization while using the cascade correlation learning architecture."
Book Synopsis Constructive Neural Networks by : Leonardo Franco
Download or read book Constructive Neural Networks written by Leonardo Franco and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-27 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a collection of invited works that consider constructive methods for neural networks, taken primarily from papers presented at a special th session held during the 18 International Conference on Artificial Neural Networks (ICANN 2008) in September 2008 in Prague, Czech Republic. The book is devoted to constructive neural networks and other incremental learning algorithms that constitute an alternative to the standard method of finding a correct neural architecture by trial-and-error. These algorithms provide an incremental way of building neural networks with reduced topologies for classification problems. Furthermore, these techniques produce not only the multilayer topologies but the value of the connecting synaptic weights that are determined automatically by the constructing algorithm, avoiding the risk of becoming trapped in local minima as might occur when using gradient descent algorithms such as the popular back-propagation. In most cases the convergence of the constructing algorithms is guaranteed by the method used. Constructive methods for building neural networks can potentially create more compact and robust models which are easily implemented in hardware and used for embedded systems. Thus a growing amount of current research in neural networks is oriented towards this important topic. The purpose of this book is to gather together some of the leading investigators and research groups in this growing area, and to provide an overview of the most recent advances in the techniques being developed for constructive neural networks and their applications.
Book Synopsis Ensemble Machine Learning by : Cha Zhang
Download or read book Ensemble Machine Learning written by Cha Zhang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-17 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is common wisdom that gathering a variety of views and inputs improves the process of decision making, and, indeed, underpins a democratic society. Dubbed “ensemble learning” by researchers in computational intelligence and machine learning, it is known to improve a decision system’s robustness and accuracy. Now, fresh developments are allowing researchers to unleash the power of ensemble learning in an increasing range of real-world applications. Ensemble learning algorithms such as “boosting” and “random forest” facilitate solutions to key computational issues such as face recognition and are now being applied in areas as diverse as object tracking and bioinformatics. Responding to a shortage of literature dedicated to the topic, this volume offers comprehensive coverage of state-of-the-art ensemble learning techniques, including the random forest skeleton tracking algorithm in the Xbox Kinect sensor, which bypasses the need for game controllers. At once a solid theoretical study and a practical guide, the volume is a windfall for researchers and practitioners alike.

Book Synopsis Domain Generalization with Machine Learning in the NOvA Experiment by : Andrew T.C. Sutton
Download or read book Domain Generalization with Machine Learning in the NOvA Experiment written by Andrew T.C. Sutton and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-10 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents significant advances in the use of neural networks to study the properties of neutrinos. Machine learning tools like neural networks (NN) can be used to identify the particle types or determine their energies in detectors such as those used in the NOvA neutrino experiment, which studies changes in a beam of neutrinos as it propagates approximately 800 km through the earth. NOvA relies heavily on simulations of the physics processes and the detector response; these simulations work well, but do not match the real experiment perfectly. Thus, neural networks trained on simulated datasets must include systematic uncertainties that account for possible imperfections in the simulation. This thesis presents the first application in HEP of adversarial domain generalization to a regression neural network. Applying domain generalization to problems with large systematic variations will reduce the impact of uncertainties while avoiding the risk of falsely constraining the phase space. Reducing the impact of systematic uncertainties makes NOvA analysis more robust, and improves the significance of experimental results.

Book excerpt: The International Conference on Intelligent Computing (ICIC) was formed to p- vide an annual forum dedicated to the emerging and challenging topics in artificial intelligence, machine learning, bioinformatics, and computational biology, etc. It aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from both academia and ind- try to share ideas, problems and solutions related to the multifaceted aspects of intelligent computing. ICIC 2008, held in Shanghai, China, September 15–18, 2008, constituted the 4th International Conference on Intelligent Computing. It built upon the success of ICIC 2007, ICIC 2006 and ICIC 2005 held in Qingdao, Kunming and Hefei, China, 2007, 2006 and 2005, respectively. This year, the conference concentrated mainly on the theories and methodologies as well as the emerging applications of intelligent computing. Its aim was to unify the picture of contemporary intelligent computing techniques as an integral concept that highlights the trends in advanced computational intelligence and bridges theoretical research with applications. Therefore, the theme for this conference was “Emerging Intelligent Computing Technology and Applications”. Papers focusing on this theme were solicited, addressing theories, methodologies, and applications in science and technology.
