Book Synopsis Memory Improvement by : Douglas J. Herrmann
Download or read book Memory Improvement written by Douglas J. Herrmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memory Improvement: Implications for Memory Theory brings together researchers working on various aspects in the field. Recent findings on memory improvement are examined, and their relevance to memory theory is demonstrated. A majority of the chapters review how certain psychological factors (psychopharmacology, emotional state, metamemory, strategies, practice, external aids, social interaction, context, and attention) may be influenced to improve one's memory. In the final chapters an attempt is made to relate memory-improvement phenomena to the theory of memory improvement and to memory theory in general. This book extends understanding of memory and questions to what extent the memory system functions independently of the rest of the psychological system. The book is aimed at a broad spectrum of psychologists interested in state-of-the-art memory-improvement research from both a practical and a theoretical perspective.

Book Synopsis Strategic Help Seeking by : Stuart A. Karabenick
Download or read book Strategic Help Seeking written by Stuart A. Karabenick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is considerable agreement that more successful learners are active, engaged, and self-regulating learners who understand and are motivated to apply learning strategies under appropriate conditions. One important strategic activity is seeking help when necessary, rather than giving up or engaging in fruitless persistence. Research on strategic help seeking has matured significantly in recent years. This volume captures the current state of knowledge, research, and theory on help seeking as a strategic learning resource. It is international in scope, with contributors from the U.S., the Netherlands, Japan, and Israel. As a whole, the book suggests that strategic (adaptive) help seeking is a critical school readiness skill that is facilitated by mastery-oriented classroom achievement and social goals, by teachers who invite questions rather than those who ask them, and by cultural characteristics that support student inquiry. A conceptual overview is followed by three chapters that examine help seeking from complementary theoretical perspectives and make important distinctions between forms of help seeking; two chapters that focus on how learners' achievement and social goals affect classroom help seeking; one chapter specifically devoted to cross-cultural comparisons of help seeking in Western cultures and in Japan; two chapters that examine the most frequent manifestation of help seeking--that of question asking; and one chapter that explores help-seeking in the information age (the library reference process, information technology, and computer-mediated communication). All chapters include attention to the implications of research and theory for help seeking in instructional settings. Strategic Help Seeking is an excellent resource for educational researchers and practitioners including teachers, school administrators, instructional designers, reference librarians.

Download or read book Educational Accountability written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age when responses to accountability regimes in education range from hysteria to cynicism, this volume reframes accountability in narratives of collective, participatory responsibility that leave one feeling inspired and ready to act. The authors, all scholar-practitioners speaking from contexts spanning leadership, policy, literacy, indigenous education, and diversity, explore ways to navigate accountability discourses with wisdom, courage and hope.—Tara Fenwick, PhD, Head, Dept. of Educational Studies, University of British Columbia. In this collection, the preoccupation of educational institutions with accountability is critically examined by writers who work in the field. They consider the impact of accountability regimes on professional practice and the learning agenda, challenge current policies and call for a rethinking of accountability. The skills and knowledge associated with this work is what we should hold schools accountable to. It is, as you see from reading these contributions, time for change.—Stephen Murgatroyd, PhD, Chief Scout, The Innovation Expedition Inc. About the Book From their diverse perspectives, nine educational practitioners discuss current educational accountability policies and how these affect students, educators, learning and teaching in a variety of settings, from K-12 schools to post-secondary institutions and government agencies. The authors combine theory, research and their day-to-day experiences to reflect on the challenges posed by realities such as outcomes-based curricula, high-stakes testing, standardized reporting and management by objectives. By examining current accountability initiatives and their effects in relation to core values of public education such as equity, diversity, democracy and opportunity, this book offers educators a range of insights for thinking about and doing education differently.

Because we believe research matters, we formed this space to encourage a wider sharing and a broader consideration of educational research. We believe research can help us seek answers to key questions;we also believe engaging in research to answer our questions helps us become connected and powerful. Our agenda is to investigate all aspects of life of/in schools, focusing upon the good work of teachers and the learning of both children and teachers. We believe we are part of a large community of colleagues who wish the same. With this journal, to create a meeting place for those of us who seek to better understand teaching and learning. What is happening in the United States with teaching and learning the space we are building can be seen as a bit radical. It is our resistance to outside force. It is encouragement for us all in our difficult work.

Download or read book Bucking Conservatism written by Leon Crane Bear and published by Athabasca University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-25 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With lively, informative contributions by both scholars and activists, Bucking Conservatism highlights the individuals and groups who challenged Alberta’s conservative status quo in the 1960s and 70s. Drawing on archival records, newspaper articles, police reports, and interviews, the contributors examine Alberta’s history through the eyes of Indigenous activists protesting discriminatory legislation and unfulfilled treaty obligations, women and lesbian and gay persons standing up to the heteropatriarchy, student activists seeking to forge a new democracy, and anti-capitalist environmentalists demanding social change. This book uncovers the lasting influence of Alberta’s noncomformists---those who recognized the need for dissent in a province defined by wealth and right-wing politics---and poses thought-provoking questions for contemporary activists.
