Book excerpt: We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced with a Z boson in 4.1 fb−1 of data collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron. In events consistent with the decay of the Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair and the Z boson to electrons or muons, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on the ZH production cross section times the H --> b{bar b} branching ratio. Improved analysis methods enhance signal sensitivity by 20% relative to previous searches beyond the gain due to the larger data sample. At a Higgs boson mass of 115 GeV/c2 we set a limit of 5.9 times the standard model value.

Book excerpt: In this Thesis a search for Higgs boson production has been performed analysing data gathered by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) from proton-antiproton (p$\bar{p}$) collisions at the center of mass energy √s = 1.96 TeV. Event selection has been optimized on Higgs decaying into W+W- bosons in order to reconstruct final states with two charged leptons formed by either an electron and a tau or a muon and a tau focusing on taus decaying into hadrons. No evidence of Higgs production has been found analysing 4.8 fb-1 of data and an up- per limit has been set on the production cross section as a function of the mass mH in the range from 130 to 200 GeV/c2 with a 95% Confidence Level. For a Higgs mass hypothesis of 160 GeV/c2 the observed limit is 33.5 times the Standard Model predicted cross section [sigma]SM while the expected upper limit for the same mass is 19.6×[sigma]SM. The high recorded luminosity along with the development of new analysis techniques are expected to improve the CDF sensitivity to the search for Higgs boson with hadronic taus reconstructed in the final state, in the mass range 130 to 200 GeV/c2.

Book excerpt: In this work, the interaction between the Higgs boson and the top quark is studied with the proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV provided by the LHC at the CMS detector at CERN (Geneva). At the LHC, these particles are produced simultaneously via the associate production of the Higgs boson with one top quark (tH process) or two top quarks (ttH process). Compared to many other possible outcomes of the proton-proton interactions, these processes are very rare, as the top quark and the Higgs boson are the heaviest elementary particles known. Hence, identifying them constitutes a significant experimental challenge. A high particle selection efficiency in the CMS detector is therefore crucial. At the core of this selection stands the Level-1 (L1) trigger system, a system that filters collision events to retain only those with potential interest for physics analysis. The selection of hadronically decaying τ leptons, expected from the Higgs boson decays, is especially demanding due to the large background arising from the QCD interactions. The first part of this thesis presents the optimization of the L1 τ algorithm in Run 2 (2016-2018) and Run 3 (2022-2024) of the LHC. It includes the development of a novel trigger concept for the High-Luminosity LHC, foreseen to start in 2027 and to deliver 5 times the current instantaneous luminosity. To this end, sophisticated algorithms based on machine learning approaches are used, facilitated by the increasingly modern technology and powerful computation of the trigger system. The second part of the work presents the search of the tH and ttH processes with the subsequent decays of the Higgs boson to pairs of τ lepton, W bosons or Z bosons, making use of the data recorded during Run 2. The presence of multiple particles in the final state, along with the low cross section of the processes, makes the search an ideal use case for multivariant discriminants that enhance the selectivity of the signals and reject the overwhelming background contributions. The discriminants presented are built using state-of-the-art machine learning techniques, able to capture the correlations amongst the processes involved, as well as the so-called Matrix Element Method (MEM), which combines the theoretical description of the processes with the detector resolution effects. The level of sophistication of the methods used, along with the unprecedented amount of collision data analyzed, result in the most stringent measurements of the tH and ttH cross sections up to date.

Book excerpt: Abstract: We present a search for standard model Higgs boson production in association with a W boson in proton-antiproton collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. WH candidate events have a signature of a single lepton, missing transverse energy, and two jets. The search looks for candidate events in approximately 2.7 fb−1 of data recorded with the CDF II detector. The high transverse momentum (high-pT) lepton (electron or muon) in the events provides a distinct signature for triggering and most of the events in the dataset come from high-pT lepton triggers. Our analysis improves on prior searches by including events recorded on the Missing Transverse Energy (MET) plus 2 jets trigger with a lepton reconstructed as an isolated high-pT charged particle. We increase the sample purity by identifying ("tagging") long-lived b-hadrons in jets. A neural network combines distinguishing kinematic information into a function optimized for WH sensitivity. The neural network output distributions are consistent with the standard model background expectations and we set limits upper limits on the rate of Higgs production. We set 95% confidence level upper limits on the WH production cross section times branching ratio for Higgs masses from 100 to 150 GeV/c2 and express our results as a ratio of the experimental limit to the theoretical Standard Model production rate. Our limits range from 3.6 (4.3 expected) to 61.1 (43.2 expected) for Higgs masses from 100 to 150 GeV/c2, respectively.

Book excerpt: We search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with an electroweak vector boson in events with no identified charged leptons, large imbalance in transverse momentum, and two jets where at least one contains a secondary vertex consistent with the decay of b hadrons. We use ≈1 fb−1 integrated luminosity of p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV recorded by the CDF II experiment at the Tevatron. We find 268 (16) single (double) b-tagged candidate events, where 248 ± 43 (14.4 ± 2.7) are expected from standard model background processes. We place 95% confidence level upper limits on the Higgs boson production cross section for several Higgs boson masses ranging from 110 GeV/c2 to 140 GeV/c2. For a mass of 115 GeV/c2 the observed (expected) limit is 20.4 (14.2) times the standard model prediction.

Book excerpt: We present a search for associated production of Z and Higgs bosons in 4.2 fb−1 of {bar p}p collisions at (square root)s = 1.96 TeV, produced in RunII of the Tevatron and recorded by the D0 detector. The search is performed in events containing at least two muons and at least two jets. The ZH signal is distinguished from the expected backgrounds by means of multivariate classifiers known as random forests. Binned random forest output distributions are used in comparing the data to background-only and signal+background hypotheses. No excess is observed in the data, so we set upper limits on ZH production with a 95% confidence level.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents preliminary results of a search for Higgs boson production in association with top quarks in multilepton final states. The search was conducted in the 2012 dataset of proton-proton collisions delivered by the CERN Large Hadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV and collected by the ATLAS experiment. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 inverse femtobarns. The analysis is conducted by measuring event counts in signal regions distinguished by the number of leptons (2 same-sign, 3, and 4), jets and b-tagged jets present in the reconstructed events. The observed events in the signal regions constitute an excess over the expected number of background events. The results are evaluated using a frequentist statistical model. The observed exclusion upper limit at the 95 % confidence level is 5.50 times the predicted Standard Model production cross section for Higgs production in association with top quarks. The fitted value of the ratio of the observed production rate to the expected Standard Model production rate is 2.83 + 1.58 - 1.35.

Book excerpt: The analysis described in this thesis is the search for the Higgs boson, decaying into bb pair, in the associated production with a vector boson, in the extreme Higgs boson transverse momentum region where the Higgs boson is reconstructed using the large-R jet technique. The use of the large-R jets allows to add a part of the phase space unexplored so far, which is particularly sensitive to possible new physics. The analysed data have been collected at LHC by the ATLAS detector between 2015 and 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV. The same dataset has been used to perform the differential pp → ZH and pp → WH cross-section measurements used to extract the information on the Higgs couplings and to put limits on Beyond the Standard Model effects. Furthermore the analysis has been re-used to perform a cross-section measurement of the diboson ZZ and WZ processes because the diboson and the Higgs processes have a similar topology. For the first time the ZZ(bb) and WZ(bb) cross-sections are measured at √s = 13 TeV and the observed cross-section measurements are consistent with the Standard Model predictions.

Book excerpt: A scientifically accurate description of matter interpreted as a substance made up of corpuscular constituents was established during the course of the 19th century. In this description, atoms - the building blocks of the matter - form molecules. The properties of the molecules were described by chemistry or thermodynamics depending on what characteristics of the matter were investigated. In both theories, the molecules can dissociate to atoms when the kinetic energies of the atoms exceed the strength of the chemical bonds. The number of atoms is always preserved in a closed system. This is not true, however, when the matter takes up much higher energies at relativistic scales. New particles can be produced at the expense of the kinetic energy. The number of particles is no longer preserved. There are other conserved quantities, however, these quantities, the charge, baryon number, lepton number, are associated with particles that are considered elementary today. The properties and behavior of these elementary particles are the subject of Particle Physics or High Energy Physics.

Book excerpt: Finding the standard model Higgs boson and discovering beyond-standard model physics phenomena have been the most important goals for the high-energy physics in the last decades. In this thesis, we present two such searches. First is the search for the low mass standard model Higgs boson produced in association with a vector boson; second is the rst search for a dark-matter candidate (D) produced in association with a top quark (t) in particle colliders. We search in events with energetic jets and large missing transverse energy { a signature characterized by complicated backgrounds { in data collected by the CDF detector with proton-antiproton collisions at p s = 1:96 TeV. We discuss the techniques that have been developed for background modeling, for discriminating signal from background, and for reducing background resulting from detector e ects. In the Higgs search, we report the 95% con dence level upper limits on the pro- duction cross section across masses of 90 to 150 GeV/c2. The expected limits are improved by an average of 14% relative to the previous analysis. The Large Hadron Collider experiments reported a Higgs-like particle with mass of 125 GeV/c2 by study- ing the data collected in year 2011/12. At a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV/c2, our observed (expected) limit is 3.06 (3.33) times the standard model prediction, corre- sponding to one of the most sensitive searches to date in this nal state. In the dark matter search, we nd the data are consistent with the standard model prediction, thus set 95% con dence level upper limits on the cross section of the process p p ! t + D as a function of the mass of the dark-matter candidate. The xviii upper limits are approximately 0.5 pb for a dark-matter particle with masses in the range of 0 150 GeV/c2.

Book excerpt: In this Thesis the electro-weak spontaneous symmetry breaking of the Standard Model (SM) is studied by searching for the scalar Higgs particle in the proton antiproton collisions of the Tevatron collider, at the center of mass energy √s = 1.96 TeV. We report on the inclusive search for the Higgs boson decaying to two W bosons in the final state characterized by two charged leptons (e or [mu]) and two neutrinos. The analysis of 4.8 fb$^{-1}$ of data recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) shows no evidence of its production. We set 95% Confidence Level upper limits on the production cross section as a function of the mass $m_H$ in the range 110 to 200 GeV/$c^2$. For $m_H$ = 165 GeV/$c^2$ the observed limit is 1.3 times the SM predicted cross section ([sigma]H); the expected limit, in absence of signal, is 1.2+0.6 -0.4[sigma](H). These limits are the most stringent ones set by a single experiment up to date, for $m_H$ > 130 GeV/c2.
