Book excerpt: This research, involving CENIM, CORUS, Sidenor and SIMR examined the effect of compositional and processing variables on the grain coarsening characteristics of steels. Compositional variables examined included nitrogen (typical of BOS and EAF steels), aluminium, niobium, titanium and vanadium. In Al-treated steels it was shown that the nitrogen content was equally important in controlling grain coarsening temperature (GCT). In steels with ̃0.004 %N the GCT was about 950°C maximum and in excess of 1 050°C with ̃0.010 %N. Processing history was shown to have a marked influence on GCT. The variables examined included start and finish hot working temperatures, cold working, normalising and heating rate for austenitising. The highest GCT, in hot worked Al-treated steels, was achieved with high reheat temperatures (for complete AIN dissolution), and high finish working temperatures to help retain AIN in solution during cooling. Precipitation of the maximum amount of fine AIN pinning particles was achieved by slow heating (e.g. through 680°C). Abnormal grain growth, characterised by a mixture of very coarse and fine grains, occurred at the GCT and above. At much higher temperatures, Al-treated steels were generally uniformly coarse grained, but these were finer than the very coarse grains in the abnormal grain growth region. Work also examined the effect of grain size, Mn and residuals on the hardening characteristics of plain carbon steels. Grain refinement markedly reduced the depth of hardening achievable, with a lack of surface hardness in extreme instances. The results and data presented should be of major value to the heat treatment industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heat Treatment Of Steels As An Art To Improve Their Service Performance Has Been Practised Ever Since It Started To Be Used As Tools And Weapons. However, The Scientific Basis Of Heat Treatment Of Steels Became More Apparent Only In The First Half Of This Century And Still Some Gaps Remain In Its Complete Understanding.Earlier Books On Heat Treatment Of Steels Mainly Emphasised The Art And The Empirically Arrived Principles Of Heat Treatment. In The Last Few Decades, Our Understanding Of Phase Transformations And Mechanical Behaviour Of Steels, And Consequently Of Heat Treatment Of Steels, Has Considerably Increased. In This Book On Principles Of Heat Treatment Of Steels The Emphasis Is On The Scientific Principles Behind The Various Heat Treatment Processes Of Steels. Though It Is Expected That The Reader Has Sufficient Background In Phase Transformations And Mechanical Behaviour Of Materials, First Few Chapters Review These Topics With Specific Reference To Steels. Basic Principles Of Various Heat Treatment Processes Of Steels Including Surface Hardening Processes, Are Then Covered In Sufficient Detail To Give A Good Overall Understanding Of These Processes. The Detail Engineering Aspects Are, However, Omitted. These Are Easily Available In Various Handbooks On Heat Treatment. The Book Also Covers Heat Treatment Of Tool Steels And Cast Irons. The Book Has Been Well Written And Can Be Used A Textbook On Heat Treatment For Undergraduate Students. It Is Also A Good Reference Book For Teachers And Researchers In This Area And Engineers In The Industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perpetual flow of understanding between phase transformation that controls grain/microstructures and heat treatment which decides the size of grains/microstructures of steels is not well articulated in the perspective of undergraduate students. In Phase Transformations and Heat Treatments of Steels, theories of phase transformation have been used to obtain a desirable phase or combination of phases by performing appropriate heat treatment operations, leading to unification of both the concepts. Further, it includes special and critical heat treatment practices, case studies, local and in-service heat treatments, curative and preventive measures of heat treatment defects for several common and high-performance applications. Features: Presents fundamentals of phase transformation in steels Analyzes basics of phase transformation due to heat treatment of steel under various environmental conditions Explains application of heat treatment for different structural components Discusses heat treatment defects and detection Emphasizes heat treatment of special steels and in-situ heat treatment practices

Book excerpt: This book provides a solid overview of the important metallurgical concepts related to the microstructures of irons and steels, and it provides detailed guidelines for the proper metallographic techniques used to reveal, capture, and understand microstructures. This book provides clearly written explanations of important concepts, and step-by-step instructions for equipment selection and use, microscopy techniques, specimen preparation, and etching. Dozens of concise and helpful “metallographic tips” are included in the chapters on laboratory practices and specimen preparation. The book features over 500 representative microstructures, with discussions of how the structures can be altered by heat treatment and other means. A handy index to these images is provided, so the book can also be used as an atlas of iron and steel microstructures.
