Book excerpt: In the last ten to fifteen years there have been many important developments in the theory of integrable equations. This period is marked in particular by the strong impact of soliton theory in many diverse areas of mathematics and physics; for example, algebraic geometry (the solution of the Schottky problem), group theory (the discovery of quantum groups), topology (the connection of Jones polynomials with integrable models), and quantum gravity (the connection of the KdV with matrix models). This is the first book to present a comprehensive overview of these developments. Numbered among the authors are many of the most prominent researchers in the field.

An active and productive field of research, it has important applications in fluid mechanics, nonlinear optics, classical and quantum fields theories etc. This book presents a broad view of soliton theory. It gives an expository survey of the most basic ideas and methods, such as physical background, inverse scattering, Backlünd transformations, finite-dimensional completely integrable systems, symmetry, Kac-moody algebra, solitons and differential geometry, numerical analysis for nonlinear waves, and gravitational solitons. Besides the essential points of the theory, several applications are sketched and some recent developments, partly by the authors and their collaborators, are presented.

Download or read book Basic Methods Of Soliton Theory written by Ivan V Cherednik and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-08-22 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 25 years of its existence Soliton Theory has drastically expanded our understanding of “integrability” and contributed a lot to the reunification of Mathematics and Physics in the range from deep algebraic geometry and modern representation theory to quantum field theory and optical transmission lines. The book is a systematic introduction to the Soliton Theory with an emphasis on its background and algebraic aspects. It is the first one devoted to the general matrix soliton equations, which are of great importance for the foundations and the applications.Differential algebra (local conservation laws, Bäcklund-Darboux transforms), algebraic geometry (theta and Baker functions), and the inverse scattering method (Riemann-Hilbert problem) with well-grounded preliminaries are applied to various equations including principal chiral fields, Heisenberg magnets, Sin-Gordon, and Nonlinear Schrödinger equation.
Book Synopsis Recent Developments in Integrable Systems and Riemann-Hilbert Problems by : Kenneth T-R McLaughlin
Download or read book Recent Developments in Integrable Systems and Riemann-Hilbert Problems written by Kenneth T-R McLaughlin and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of papers presented at a special session on integrable systems and Riemann-Hilbert problems. The goal of the meeting was to foster new research by bringing together experts from different areas. Their contributions to the volume provide a useful portrait of the breadth and depth of integrable systems. Topics covered include discrete Painleve equations, integrable nonlinear partial differential equations, random matrix theory, Bose-Einstein condensation, spectral and inverse spectral theory, and last passage percolation models. In most of these articles, the Riemann-Hilbert problem approach plays a central role, which is powerful both analytically and algebraically. The book is intended for graduate students and researchers interested in integrable systems and its applications.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Dynamical Systems by : B. Fiedler
Download or read book Handbook of Dynamical Systems written by B. Fiedler and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2002-02-21 with total page 1099 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is volume II in a series collecting mathematical state-of-the-art surveys in the field of dynamical systems. Much of this field has developed from interactions with other areas of science, and this volume shows how concepts of dynamical systems further the understanding of mathematical issues that arise in applications. Although modeling issues are addressed, the central theme is the mathematically rigorous investigation of the resulting differential equations and their dynamic behavior. However, the authors and editors have made an effort to ensure readability on a non-technical level for mathematicians from other fields and for other scientists and engineers. The eighteen surveys collected here do not aspire to encyclopedic completeness, but present selected paradigms. The surveys are grouped into those emphasizing finite-dimensional methods, numerics, topological methods, and partial differential equations. Application areas include the dynamics of neural networks, fluid flows, nonlinear optics, and many others. While the survey articles can be read independently, they deeply share recurrent themes from dynamical systems. Attractors, bifurcations, center manifolds, dimension reduction, ergodicity, homoclinicity, hyperbolicity, invariant and inertial manifolds, normal forms, recurrence, shift dynamics, stability, to namejust a few, are ubiquitous dynamical concepts throughout the articles.

Book Synopsis Nonlinear Dynamics of Rotating Shallow Water: Methods and Advances by :
Download or read book Nonlinear Dynamics of Rotating Shallow Water: Methods and Advances written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-04-03 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rotating shallow water (RSW) model is of wide use as a conceptual tool in geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD), because, in spite of its simplicity, it contains all essential ingredients of atmosphere and ocean dynamics at the synoptic scale, especially in its two- (or multi-) layer version. The book describes recent advances in understanding (in the framework of RSW and related models) of some fundamental GFD problems, such as existence of the slow manifold, dynamical splitting of fast (inertia-gravity waves) and slow (vortices, Rossby waves) motions, nonlinear geostrophic adjustment and wave emission, the role of essentially nonlinear wave phenomena. The specificity of the book is that analytical, numerical, and experimental approaches are presented together and complement each other. Special attention is paid on explaining the methodology, e.g. multiple time-scale asymptotic expansions, averaging and removal of resonances, in what concerns theory, high-resolution finite-volume schemes, in what concerns numerical simulations, and turntable experiments with stratified fluids, in what concerns laboratory simulations. A general introduction into GFD is given at the beginning to introduce the problematics for non-specialists. At the same time, recent new results on nonlinear geostrophic adjustment, nonlinear waves, and equatorial dynamics, including some exact results on the existence of the slow manifold, wave breaking, and nonlinear wave solutions are presented for the first time in a systematic manner. · Incorporates analytical, numerical and experimental approaches in the geophysical fluid dynamics context· Combination of essentials in GFD, of the description of analytical, numerical and experimental methods (tutorial part), and new results obtained by these methods (original part)· Provides the link between GFD and mechanics (averaging method, the method of normal forms); GFD and nonlinear physics (shocks, solitons, modons, anomalous transport, periodic nonlinear waves)

Download or read book Dynamical Systems and Probabilistic Methods in Partial Differential Equations written by Percy Deift and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains some of the lectures presented in June 1994 during the AMS-SIAM Summer Seminar at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley. The goal of the seminar was to introduce participants to as many interesting and active applications of dynamical systems and probabilistic methods to problems in applied mathematics as possible. As a result, this book covers a great deal of ground. Nevertheless, the pedagogical orientation of the lectures has been retained, and therefore the book will serve as an ideal introduction to these varied and interesting topics.
