Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Mellon (1907--1999) assembled one of the world’s greatest collections of British drawings and watercolors. In his memoirs he wrote of their “beauty and freshness… their immediacy and sureness of technique, their comprehensiveness of subject matter, their vital qualities, their Englishness.” This catalogue celebrating the centenary of Mellon's birth features eighty-eight outstanding watercolors from the fifty thousand works of art on paper with which he endowed the Yale Center for British Art. The selection spans the emergence of watercolor painting in the mid-18th century to its apogee in the mid-19th. These works highlight the diversity of British watercolors, showcasing both landscape and figurative works by some of the principal artists working in the medium, including Thomas Gainsborough, Thomas Rowlandson, William Blake, and J. M.W. Turner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Whitworth Gallery, founded in 1889, holds one of the finest collections of British watercolours and drawings. This is the first book to publish this outstanding group of works in its entirety, and provides a fascinating insight into the collection. The collection is especially important because of the broad range of artists it encompasses. Holdings of Turner and Girtin are particularly significant, as are the works by Alexander and John Robert Cozens. While the main strength comes from the eighteenth century, there are also important nineteenth-century entries, including famous watercolours by Ford Madox Brown, Millais, Burne-Jones, Rossetti and Holman Hunt. Combining broad popular appeal with scholarly interest, this watercolour collection provides a source of enjoyment to the many collectors of English watercolours. The book begins with a brief introduction to the background of the collection, followed by each work presented alphabetically by artist. Each entry includes a short biography and description, followed by listings of other works. All 2,500 works are included, 2,000 of which are illustrated in black and white, and 32 in colour.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Water-Colour Painting of to-Day, 1921 The finished drawing, with its wealth of detail, has almost disappeared. It has been supplanted by the photograph, and what was achieved in days gone by with infinite toil, can now be obtained in a few minutes by a machine, albeit it lacks the essence of all creative art - individual expression. The modern tendency in water-colour painting points more and more in the direction of recording this essence in a visible form, and it is hoped that the examples in the following pages will give some idea of the various methods being adopted to achieve this end. While much of the work which is being pro duced to-day - re ecting, as it does, the general state of affairs, desperately groping after ideas but dimly conceived may, in time, develop so that it reaches a form which can be understood by the lay mind, at present it cannot be said to have advanced much beyond the experimental stage, and it has therefore been omitted from this survey. The water-colours which have been chosen for illustration are not experiments. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English landscape watercolor painting, a perfect marriage of genre and medium, entered a lively period of experimentation in style and content during the second half of the nineteenth century, with rich and diverse results. Through all the changes of style and technique and all the debates over the appropriate use of the medium, it was watercolor's ability to convey the timeless truth and reality of the natural world that mattered to artists, critics, and audiences. British watercolors of the Victorian period continued to observe an essential humility before nature; they remain fresh and compellingly immediate because they derived in the first place from the artists' heartfelt communion with the elements of nature. Victorian Landscape Watercolors begins with a consideration of the continuing influence of the great generation who earlier in the century, during the extraordinary parallel rise of watercolor and landscape painting, had established the landscape watercolor as a major British contribution to the arts. The second chapter examines the role of the landscape watercolor in the aesthetic thought of John Ruskin, whose critical voice played a dominant role in shaping that art. The third chapter looks at the place of landscape within the watercolor societies and its development as it appeared in their annual exhibitions. The final chapter deals with the tug of new and old, foreign and native in the later Victorian period. The book also features 126 watercolors, from public and private collections in America and England, all reproduced in full color and accompanied by individual commentaries. Among the 76 artists represented are David Cox, Sr. and Jr., Walter Crane, William HolmanHunt, Edward Lear, Samuel Palmer, James Mallord William Turner, James McNeill Whistler, and Ruskin himself, along with dozens of lesser-known masters of the medium. Victorian Landscape Watercolors is published in conjunction with the first exhibition to survey this period of this particularly British contribution to the arts; the exhibition, organized by the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, Connecticut, will also be seen at the Cleveland Museum of Art and in Birmingham, England.

Book excerpt: This illuminating volume explores a century in British painting that produced an enormous variety of work, ranging from the beginnings of Romanticism in the late 18th century to the British adoption of impressionism in the late 19th century. Dividing this prolific period into nine sections, the work of each artist is discussed, analyzed, and presented in biographical context. With longer sections devoted to such maior figures as Lawrence, Turner, Constable, Rossetti, Leighton, and Whistler, the artists are placed in the framework of their historical, social, and economic backgrounds. The majority of the paintings and drawings that are examined are handsomely reproduced in more than 300 plates, making this an excellent choice for students, connoisseurs, and collectors as well as anyone interested in British art. Among Luke Herrmann's books is "J.M.W. Turner Watercolours and Drawings."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of British Water Colour Painting: With a Biographical List of Painters When Horace Walpole wrote his "Anecdotes of Painting in England," in 1762, he remarked that this country had not a single volume to show on the works of its painters, and it had very rarely given birth to a genius in that profession, Flanders and Holland having sent the great men. For this latter reason he apologised for not being able to call his work "The Lives of English Painters." At the present time, however, if an apology be needed, it must be offered for adding yet another volume to the vast multitude of books which have been written concerning English painters and paintings. The earliest form of water colour painting was tempera. It is as old as the early Memphic dynasties of Egypt, i.e. 3,000 years B.C. The Egyptian painters on papyrus or on walls mixed their colours with water, and used mastic, wax, and various glues as a medium to fix them.
