Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the telecommunication and information field expands and becomes more varied, so do publications about these technologies and industries. This book is a first attempt to provide a general guide to that wealth of English-language publications -- both books and periodicals -- on all aspects of telecommunication. It is a comprehensive, evaluative sourcebook for telecommunications research in the United States that brings together a topically-arranged, cross-referenced, and indexed volume in one place. The information provided is only available by consulting a succession of different directories, guides, bibliographies, yearbooks, and other resources. On the one hand, it is a directory that describes in detail the major entities that comprise the American telecommunication research infrastructure including federal and state government offices and agencies, and private, public, and corporate research institutions. On the other hand, it is a bibliography that identifies and assesses the most important and useful reference and critical resources about U.S. telecommunication history, technology, industry and economics, social applications and impacts, plus policy, law and regulations, and role in the global telecommunication marketplace. No existing guide covers all of these aspects in the depth and detail of this volume.
Book Synopsis Communication and Democratic Reform in South Africa by : Robert B. Horwitz
Download or read book Communication and Democratic Reform in South Africa written by Robert B. Horwitz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-04-09 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines the reform of the communication sector in South Africa as a detailed and extended case study in political transformation - the transition from apartheid to democracy. The reform of broadcasting, telecommunications, the state information agency and the print press from apartheid-aligned apparatuses to accountable democratic institutions took place via a complex political process in which civil society activism, embodying a post-social democratic ideal, largely won out over the powerful forces of formal market capitalism and older models of state control. In the cautious acceptance of the market, the civil society organizations sought to use the dynamism of the market while thwarting its inevitable inequities. Forged in the crucible of a difficult transition to democracy, communication reform in South Africa was navigated between the National Party's embrace of the market and the African National Congress leadership's default statist orientation.

Book Synopsis European Telecommunications Liberalisation by : Kjell A. Eliassen
Download or read book European Telecommunications Liberalisation written by Kjell A. Eliassen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-04 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the process and consequences of telecommunications liberalisation in the context of an ever closer European Union. The creation of a single market for telecommunications and of a wider European single market mirror one another. Telecommunications are also something of a test case for the privatisation process, as this sector has traditionally been a state monopoly. The volume approaches the European experience from three angles: * the politics of regulation and the process of liberalisation in the EU (including case studies of the UK, France, and Germany) * increasing global economic interdependence makes international comparisons essential, and the volume compares the EU experience with that of the Czech Republic, Israel and Thailand * the consequences of technology and continuous innovation

Book Synopsis The Devil Is in the Details: Analysis of Substantial Market Power in Fijian Markets by : Releshni Karan Reddy
Download or read book The Devil Is in the Details: Analysis of Substantial Market Power in Fijian Markets written by Releshni Karan Reddy and published by Scientific Research Publishing, Inc. USA. This book was released on 2022-07-13 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiji, being remotely located with a small population, does not attract many players to its economy. Fewer players with large market shares coupled with high barriers to entry allow firms with substantial market power (“SMP”) to form. This research aims to explore the existence of SMP amongst selected markets and the adequacy of Fiji’s regulatory law, which is inspired by the US and EU competition regulation models. Based on the analysis of competition cases and in-depth interviews with members of the Fijian competition authority, the research examines how FCCC has dealt with the issues of testing SMP in relevant markets. Three industries were randomly selected as case studies. These were the telecommunications industry, shipping industry and the LPG industry. SMP was tested using a three-stage test. Stage One was choosing the relevant market and Stage Two was analysing the market conditions such as market shares of players and barriers to entry. Stage Three was analysing whether the player could maintain its price independently of its consumers and competitors. If Stages Two and Three was affirmative in respect of Stage One, SMP was held to exist. Legislation was closely examined to identify and verify the test of firms holding SMP. The results show existence of firms holding SMP in the chosen markets in telecommunications, shipping and LPG sectors. Competition legislation in Fiji does not limit the mere existence of SMP but punishes abuse of its SMP. The results identify the ways in which the authority seeks to adjust its competition system to the particularities of a small developing country, in terms of legislation, economy, culture and institutional framework. The existing legislation needs to be reformed to include provisions identifying tests for SMP. The study reveals inconsistencies between the formal provisions of the competition law and the manner in which it is applied and advances recommendations for improvement.

Book Synopsis The Privatisation of European Telecommunications by : Johan From
Download or read book The Privatisation of European Telecommunications written by Johan From and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This international volume presents a comprehensive, comparative study of the transformation of the European telecommunications industry from 1990 to the present. The book focuses on the old incumbent operators and their dramatic change from state agencies to listed companies. It analyzes the liberalization process, as well as the corporatization and privatization of these companies. The contributors assess the conditions for the transformations taking place; the driving forces for change; the effects to management, the efforts of the EU during these processes, and ultimately, the role of the private owner. Political science publications have all but excluded analysis of the newly privatized companies; their contribution to the liberalization process both before and after privatization; and the interplay between the national political and company levels. The book redresses this shortcoming, and also features a double empirical focus in that the main national incumbents in Europe are analyzed and compared to Telenor, the Norwegian former incumbent.
