The authors collected and analyzed information and results from CIPs they facilitated or co-advised, such as the improvement of the service level in a bottle manufacturing organization, reduction of changeover in a brewery manufacturing organization, reduction of ambulance response time, and reduction of scrap in a steel transformation manufacturing organization. Many of the CIPs were previously part of award-winning white papers documenting critical improvements. Throughout this book, readers will learn: different types of CIPs metrics to identify successful CIPs the 53 factors related to CIPs success how to manage CIPs behaviors to achieve outstanding results from CIPs. Three of the chapters are supplemented with three or more case studies. In addition, the final chapter includes a list of behaviors expected from directors, continuous improvement managers, CIP leaders/facilitators, and CIP team members to obtain the major benefits from CIPs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Commission's report makes recommendations to the Civil Aviation Authority on the maximum level of airport charges that can be levied at Heathrow and Gatwick airports for the five year period 2008-2013, as well as examining whether either company operated against the public interest in the charges they levied during the period 2002-2007 or through other operational activities. On the basis of the assumptions set out in the report, the Commission recommends i) a maximum opening yield of £10.19 per passenger at Heathrow with charges subsequently increasing at no more than RPI +7.5; and ii) a maximum opening yield of £5.50 per passenger at Gatwick with charges subsequently increasing at no more than RPI -0.5. The recommended levels are significantly below those put forward by BAA, although they are above those proposed by the airlines. The Commission argues that these charges will enable BAA to implement its plans to improve facilities and levels of service at both airports for the benefits of airlines, passengers and other airport users.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the mid-2010s, the Fourth Industrial Revolution has seen remarkable changes in information technology that have blurred the boundaries between the physical, digital and biological worlds. Industry 4.0 has enabled so-called smart factories in which computer systems equipped with machine learning algorithms can learn and control robotics with minimal need for human input. While smart technology has enabled many manufacturing businesses to increase efficiency and cut costs, many others are still struggling with implementing it. This book aims to help students, practitioners and industry leaders to become change agents and take their first steps on the path of transformation. Smart Business and Digital Transformation addresses the challenge of becoming "smart" from three different perspectives: smart factory, smart industry and smart environment. Covering technologies including the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud, artificial intelligence (AI), mobility, 5G and big data analytics, the book shows how enterprises can take advantage of them and ultimately beat the competition. The book considers the importance of operational processes, business models and organisational culture. The contributing authors and editors, based at Corvinus University, present a multidimensional picture of Industry 4.0 which is both diverse in its voices and unified in its vision. Smart Business and Digital Transformation meets the growing demand for a textbook that not only presents the latest concepts and theories but is also practical for planning, managing and implementing digital transformation in practice. The chapters include case studies to demonstrate the practical applications, and each chapter ends with review and discussion questions to develop students’ skills and competencies. Students of business and digital transformation on advanced undergraduate and MBA courses will find it an indispensable guide to a vibrant and challenging topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the author’s view of how the mind “thinks” at various levels of operation. These levels include nonconscious mind (as in spinal/brainstem reflexes and neuroendocrine controls), subconscious mind, and conscious mind. In the attempt to explain conscious mind, there is considerable critique of arguments over whether or not free will is an illusion. Finally, the author summarizes current leading theories for consciousness (Bayesian probability, chaos, and quantum mechanics) and then presents his own theory based on patterns of nerve impulses in circuits that are interlaced coherently into larger networks.
