Book Synopsis Practices for Local Calibration of LRFD Geotechnical Resistance Factors by : Andrew Boeckmann
Download or read book Practices for Local Calibration of LRFD Geotechnical Resistance Factors written by Andrew Boeckmann and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 15 years have passed since the U.S. transportation industry started its transition from allowable stress design (ASD) to load and resistance factor design (LRFD). For geotechnical design, the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications includes provisions that allow state departments of transportation (DOTs) to develop their own design methods and resistance factors. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Synthesis 601: Practices for Local Calibration of LRFD Geotechnical Resistance Factors documents the extent to which state DOTs have developed agency-specific geotechnical design methods and resistance factors and also details the challenges of the development and benefits resulting from implementation of the methods.
Book Synopsis Geotechnical Related Development and Implementation of Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Methods by : George G. Goble
Download or read book Geotechnical Related Development and Implementation of Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Methods written by George G. Goble and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1999 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to geotechnical, structural, and bridge engineers, especially those involved in the development and implementation of the geotechnical aspects of the AASHTO Bridge Code. The synthesis documents a review of geotechnical related LRFD specifications and their development worldwide to compare them with the current AASHTO LRFD Bridge Code. Design procedures for foundations, earth retaining structures, and culverts are summarized and compared with the methods specified by the AASHTO code. This TRB report provides information designed to assist engineers in implementing the geotechnical features of LRFD methods. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying U.S. and Canadian transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search using domestic and international sources. Interviews were also conducted with selected international experts. The limited available experience in the United States and information from international practice are discussed to understand the problems that have arisen in order that solutions may be found. Based on the studies reported here, suggestions for improving the code are identified.
Book Synopsis Modern Geotechnical Design Codes of Practice by : Patrick Arnold
Download or read book Modern Geotechnical Design Codes of Practice written by Patrick Arnold and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ground is one of the most highly variable of engineering materials. It is therefore not surprising that geotechnical designs depend on local site conditions and local engineering experience. Engineering practices, relating to investigation and design methods site understanding and to safety levels acceptable to society, will therefore vary between different regions. The challenge in geotechnical engineering is to make use of worldwide geotechnical experience, established over many years, to aid in the development and harmonization of geotechnical design codes. Given the significant uncertainties involved, empiricism and engineering

Book Synopsis Geotechnical Risk and Safety by : Yusuke Honjo
Download or read book Geotechnical Risk and Safety written by Yusuke Honjo and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communication of risks within a transparent and accountable framework is essential in view of increasing mobility and the complexity of the modern society and the field of geotechnical engineering does not form an exception. As a result, modern risk assessment and management are required in all aspects of geotechnical issues, such as planning, design, construction of geotechnical structures, mitigation of geo-hazards, management of large construction projects, maintenance of structures and life-cycle cost evaluation. This volume discusses: 1. Evaluation and control of uncertainties through investigation, design and construction of geotechnical structures; 2. Performance-based specifications, reliability based design and limit state design of geotechnical structures, and design code developments; 3. Risk assessment and management of geo-hazards, such as landslides, earthquakes, debris flow, etc.; 4. Risk management issues concerning large geotechnical construction projects; 5. Repair and maintenance strategies of geotechnical structures. Intended for researchers and practitioners in geotechnical, geological, infrastructure and construction engineering.

Book Synopsis Proposed Specifications for LRFD Soil-nailing Design and Construction by : Carlos Alberto Lazarte
Download or read book Proposed Specifications for LRFD Soil-nailing Design and Construction written by Carlos Alberto Lazarte and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2011 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains proposed specifications for the design and construction of soil-nailed retaining structures. Despite their advantages in cut applications, these structures are not available to some state DOTs, due to the lack of guidance for their use in AASHTO's standard specifications based on load and resistance factor design (LRFD).

Book Synopsis Model Uncertainties in Foundation Design by : Chong Tang
Download or read book Model Uncertainties in Foundation Design written by Chong Tang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Model Uncertainties in Foundation Design is unique in the compilation of the largest and the most diverse load test databases to date, covering many foundation types (shallow foundations, spudcans, driven piles, drilled shafts, rock sockets and helical piles) and a wide range of ground conditions (soil to soft rock). All databases with names prefixed by NUS are available upon request. This book presents a comprehensive evaluation of the model factor mean (bias) and coefficient of variation (COV) for ultimate and serviceability limit state based on these databases. These statistics can be used directly for AASHTO LRFD calibration. Besides load test databases, performance databases for other geo-structures and their model factor statistics are provided. Based on this extensive literature survey, a practical three-tier scheme for classifying the model uncertainty of geo-structures according to the model factor mean and COV is proposed. This empirically grounded scheme can underpin the calibration of resistance factors as a function of the degree of understanding – a concept already adopted in the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code and being considered for the new draft for Eurocode 7 Part 1 (EN 1997-1:202x). The helical pile research in Chapter 7 was recognised by the 2020 ASCE Norman Medal.
