Book Synopsis Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs by : Harold Abelson
Download or read book Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs written by Harold Abelson and published by Mit Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs has had a dramatic impact on computer science curricula over the past decade. This long-awaited revision contains changes throughout the text. There are new implementations of most of the major programming systems in the book, including the interpreters and compilers, and the authors have incorporated many small changes that reflect their experience teaching the course at MIT since the first edition was published. A new theme has been introduced that emphasizes the central role played by different approaches to dealing with time in computational models: objects with state, concurrent programming, functional programming and lazy evaluation, and nondeterministic programming. There are new example sections on higher-order procedures in graphics and on applications of stream processing in numerical programming, and many new exercises. In addition, all the programs have been reworked to run in any Scheme implementation that adheres to the IEEE standard.

Book Synopsis Computer Architecture for Scientists by : Andrew A. Chien
Download or read book Computer Architecture for Scientists written by Andrew A. Chien and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-10 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic increase in computer performance has been extraordinary, but not for all computations: it has key limits and structure. Software architects, developers, and even data scientists need to understand how exploit the fundamental structure of computer performance to harness it for future applications. Ideal for upper level undergraduates, Computer Architecture for Scientists covers four key pillars of computer performance and imparts a high-level basis for reasoning with and understanding these concepts: Small is fast – how size scaling drives performance; Implicit parallelism – how a sequential program can be executed faster with parallelism; Dynamic locality – skirting physical limits, by arranging data in a smaller space; Parallelism – increasing performance with teams of workers. These principles and models provide approachable high-level insights and quantitative modelling without distracting low-level detail. Finally, the text covers the GPU and machine-learning accelerators that have become increasingly important for mainstream applications.

Book excerpt: Patterns and Skeletons for Parallel and Distributed Computing is a unique survey of research work in high-level parallel and distributed computing over the past ten years. Comprising contributions from the leading researchers in Europe and the US, it looks at interaction patterns and their role in parallel and distributed processing, and demonstrates for the first time the link between skeletons and design patterns. It focuses on computation and communication structures that are beyond simple message-passing or remote procedure calling, and also on pragmatic approaches that lead to practical design and programming methodologies with their associated compilers and tools. The book is divided into two parts which cover: skeletons-related material such as expressing and composing skeletons, formal transformation, cost modelling and languages, compilers and run-time systems for skeleton-based programming.- design patterns and other related concepts, applied to other areas such as real-time, embedded and distributed systems. It will be an essential reference for researchers undertaking new projects in this area, and will also provide useful background reading for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate courses on parallel or distributed system design.

Book Synopsis Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs by : Harold Abelson
Download or read book Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs written by Harold Abelson and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new version of the classic and widely used text adapted for the JavaScript programming language. Since the publication of its first edition in 1984 and its second edition in 1996, Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs (SICP) has influenced computer science curricula around the world. Widely adopted as a textbook, the book has its origins in a popular entry-level computer science course taught by Harold Abelson and Gerald Jay Sussman at MIT. SICP introduces the reader to central ideas of computation by establishing a series of mental models for computation. Earlier editions used the programming language Scheme in their program examples. This new version of the second edition has been adapted for JavaScript. The first three chapters of SICP cover programming concepts that are common to all modern high-level programming languages. Chapters four and five, which used Scheme to formulate language processors for Scheme, required significant revision. Chapter four offers new material, in particular an introduction to the notion of program parsing. The evaluator and compiler in chapter five introduce a subtle stack discipline to support return statements (a prominent feature of statement-oriented languages) without sacrificing tail recursion. The JavaScript programs included in the book run in any implementation of the language that complies with the ECMAScript 2020 specification, using the JavaScript package sicp provided by the MIT Press website.

Book Synopsis Multithreaded Computer Architecture: A Summary of the State of the ART by : Robert A. Iannucci
Download or read book Multithreaded Computer Architecture: A Summary of the State of the ART written by Robert A. Iannucci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multithreaded computer architecture has emerged as one of the most promising and exciting avenues for the exploitation of parallelism. This new field represents the confluence of several independent research directions which have united over a common set of issues and techniques. Multithreading draws on recent advances in dataflow, RISC, compiling for fine-grained parallel execution, and dynamic resource management. It offers the hope of dramatic performance increases through parallel execution for a broad spectrum of significant applications based on extensions to `traditional' approaches. Multithreaded Computer Architecture is divided into four parts, reflecting four major perspectives on the topic. Part I provides the reader with basic background information, definitions, and surveys of work which have in one way or another been pivotal in defining and shaping multithreading as an architectural discipline. Part II examines key elements of multithreading, highlighting the fundamental nature of latency and synchronization. This section presents clever techniques for hiding latency and supporting large synchronization name spaces. Part III looks at three major multithreaded systems, considering issues of machine organization and compilation strategy. Part IV concludes the volume with an analysis of multithreaded architectures, showcasing methodologies and actual measurements. Multithreaded Computer Architecture: A Summary of the State of the Art is an excellent reference source and may be used as a text for advanced courses on the subject.

This book was released on 2019-04-27 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum mechanics, the subfield of physics that describes the behavior of very small (quantum) particles, provides the basis for a new paradigm of computing. First proposed in the 1980s as a way to improve computational modeling of quantum systems, the field of quantum computing has recently garnered significant attention due to progress in building small-scale devices. However, significant technical advances will be required before a large-scale, practical quantum computer can be achieved. Quantum Computing: Progress and Prospects provides an introduction to the field, including the unique characteristics and constraints of the technology, and assesses the feasibility and implications of creating a functional quantum computer capable of addressing real-world problems. This report considers hardware and software requirements, quantum algorithms, drivers of advances in quantum computing and quantum devices, benchmarks associated with relevant use cases, the time and resources required, and how to assess the probability of success.
