Reliable transfer function and models will enable Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) to more accurately quantify the pavement service and performance life for managing their roadway network. Calibration coefficients for all transfer functions in the Pavement ME Design software package were determined for both flexible and rigid pavements. Both Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) and non-LTPP test sections were used to estimate, for interim use, the local calibration coefficients. The inputs for the non-LTPP calibration sites were based on as-built records and construction files. Thus, these calibration coefficients are considered preliminary until the field investigations have been completed for the non-LTPP sites.

Book excerpt: The Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) was developed under National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Project 1-37A as a novel mechanistic-empirical procedure for the analysis and design of pavements. The MEPDG was subsequently supported by AASHTO's DARWin-ME and most recently marketed as AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design software as of February 2013. Although the core design process and computational engine have remained the same over the years, some enhancements to the pavement performance prediction models have been implemented along with other documented changes as the MEPDG transitioned to AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design software. Preliminary studies were carried out to determine possible differences between AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design, MEPDG (version 1.1), and DARWin-ME (version 1.1) performance predictions for new jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP), new hot mix asphalt (HMA), and HMA over JPCP systems. Differences were indeed observed between the pavement performance predictions produced by these different software versions. Further investigation was needed to verify these differences and to evaluate whether identified local calibration factors from the latest MEPDG (version 1.1) were acceptable for use with the latest version (version 2.1.24) of AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design at the time this research was conducted. Therefore, the primary objective of this research was to examine AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design performance predictions using previously identified MEPDG calibration factors (through InTrans Project 11-401) and, if needed, refine the local calibration coefficients of AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design pavement performance predictions for Iowa pavement systems using linear and nonlinear optimization procedures. A total of 130 representative sections across Iowa consisting of JPCP, new HMA, and HMA over JPCP sections were used. The local calibration results of AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design are presented and compared with national and locally calibrated MEPDG models.

Book excerpt: The main objective of Part 3 was to locally calibrate and validate the mechanistic-empirical pavement design guide (Pavement-ME) performance models to Michigan conditions. The local calibration of the performance models in the Pavement-ME is a challenging task, especially due to data limitations. A total of 108 and 20 reconstruct flexible and rigid pavement candidate projects, respectively, were selected. Similarly, a total of 33 and 8 rehabilitated pavement projects for flexible and rigid pavements, respectively were selected for the local calibration. The selection process considered pavement type, age, geographical location, and number of condition data collection cycles. The selected set of pavement section met the following data requirements (a) adequate number of sections for each performance model, (b) a wide range of inputs related to traffic, climate, design and material characterization, (c) a reasonable extent and occurrence of observed condition data over time. The national calibrated performance models were evaluated by using the data for the selected pavement sections. The results showed that the global models in the Pavement-ME don't adequately predict pavement performance for Michigan conditions. Therefore, local calibration of the models is essential. The local calibrations for all performance prediction models for flexible and rigid pavements were performed for multiple datasets (reconstruct, rehabilitation and a combination of both) and using robust statistical techniques (e.g. repeated split sampling and bootstrapping). The results of local calibration and validation of various models show that the locally calibrated model significantly improve the performance predictions for Michigan conditions. The local calibration coefficients for all performance models are documented in the report. The report also includes the recommendations on the most appropriate calibration coefficients for each of the performance models in Michigan along with the future guidelines and data needs.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has been working toward implementing ME design by characterizing traffic and materials inputs, training with the models and design software, and analyzing current pavement designs in AASHTOware Pavement ME Design software. This study compared the measured performance of asphalt and continuously reinforced concrete pavements (CRCP) from VDOTs Pavement Management System (PMS) records to the predicted performance in AASHTOware Pavement ME Design. Model coefficients in the software were adjusted to match the predicted asphalt pavement permanent deformation, asphalt bottom-up fatigue cracking, and CRCP punchout outputs to the measured values from PMS records. Values for reliability, design life inputs, and distress limits were identified as a starting point for VDOT to consider when using AASHTOware Pavement ME Design through consideration of national guidelines, existing VDOT standards, PMS rating formulas, typical pavement performance at time of overlay, and the data used for local calibration. The model calibration coefficients and design requirement values recommended in this study can be used by VDOT with AASHTOware Pavement ME Design as a starting point to implement the software for design, which should allow for more optimized pavement structures and improve the long-term performance of pavements in Virginia.

Improved accuracy of the design process requires that the models be calibrated to local conditions. Therefore, the objective of this study was to implement the AASHTOWare PMED software for rehabilitated pavement design by performing local calibration for state-managed roads in Kansas, New Jersey, and Maine. Transfer functions for translating mechanistic pavement responses into visible distresses embedded in the AASHTOWare PMED software were locally calibrated to eliminate bias and reduce the standard error for rehabilitated pavements in Kansas and New York. Calibration was performed using version 2.5 and then verified with version 2.6.2.2, which was released in September 2022. Rehabilitated pavement sections included asphalt concrete (AC) over AC in Kansas and the New England region and jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP) sections in Kansas. Because the PMED software requires periodic recalibration of the prediction models to account for improvements in the models, changes in agency design and construction strategies, and updates in performance data, this study also developed an automated technique for calibrating the AASHTOWare PMED software performance models. This automated methodology incorporated robust sampling techniques to verify calibrated PMED models. In addition, statistical equivalence testing was incorporated to ensure PMED-predicted performance results tended to agree with the in-situ data. A comparison of results for the AASHTOWare PMED versions 2.5 and 2.6.2.2 showed that most predicted distress values in Kansas remained the same, except for the predicted AC total fatigue cracking, specifically asphalt bottom-up fatigue cracking. For both distress types, slightly higher values were obtained with version 2.6.2.2. Results of three candidate crack tests showed that IDEAL-CT test results can be used as cracking-resistance criterion for mixtures in Kansas. The rehabilitation models were also successfully calibrated for the New England region.

This study was initiated to calibrate MEPDG distress models for Kansas. Twenty-seven newly constructed projects were selected for flexible pavement distress model calibration, 21 of which were used for calibration and six that were selected for validation. In addition, 22 newly constructed jointed plain concrete pavements (JPCPs) were selected to calibrate rigid models; 17 of those projects were selected for calibration and five were selected for validation. AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design (ver. 2.2) software was used for design analysis, and the traditional split sampling method was followed in calibration. MEPDG-predicted distresses of Kansas road segments were compared with those from Pavement Management Information System data. Statistical analysis was performed using the Microsoft Excel statistical toolbox. The rutting and roughness models for flexible pavement were successfully calibrated with reduced bias and accepted null hypothesis. Calibration of the top-down fatigue cracking model was not satisfactory due to variability in measured data, and the bottom-up fatigue cracking model was not calibrated because measured data was unavailable. AASHTOWare software did not predict transverse cracking for any projects with global values. Thus thermal cracking model was not calibrated. The JPCP transverse joint faulting model was calibrated using sensitivity analysis and iterative runs of AASHTOWare to determine optimal coefficients that minimize bias. The IRI model was calibrated using the generalized reduced gradient nonlinear optimization technique in Microsoft Excel Solver. The transverse slab cracking model could not be calibrated due to lack of measured cracking data.

Book excerpt: "Abstract: The AASHTOWare Pavement METM Design is the next generation of AASHTO pavement design software, which builds upon the newly developed NCHRP Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG). Pavement METM reflects a major change in the methods and procedures engineers use to design pavement structure and represents the most current advancements in pavement design. In preparation for DOTD to adopt the new design guide, there is an urgent need to evaluate the MEPDG pavement design software based on typical Louisiana pavement structures and local conditions. This study selected a total of 162 projects (pavement sections) from the existing DOTD highway network for the evaluation of MEPDG pavement design, local calibration, and validation of Pavement ME in Louisiana. The selected projects consisted of flexible pavements with five types of base (asphalt concrete base, rubblized PCC base, crushed stone or recycled PCC base, soil cement base, and stabilized base with a stone interlayer), rigid pavements with three types of base (unbound granular base, stabilized base, and asphalt mixture blanket), and HMA overlay on top of existing flexible pavements. Pavement design information including structure, materials, and traffic were retrieved from multiple network-level data sources at DOTD. A Louisiana default input strategy of Pavement ME that reflects Louisiana’s condition and practice was developed from results of sensitivity analysis. In addition, based on a consensus distress survey and pavement management system (PMS) distress triggers, the design reliability and performance criteria were established for different highway classes in Louisiana. The predicted performance from the Pavement ME was then compared with the corresponding measured performance retrieved from PMS. The analysis results indicate that the Pavement ME’s nationally-calibrated distress models generally under-predict alligator cracking, but over-predict rutting for DOTD’s flexible pavement types. For rigid pavements, Pavement ME over-predicts slab cracking but under-predicts joint faulting. For those nationally-calibrated distress models that showed constant bias and large variation, local calibration was carried out against the performance data retrieved from PMS. After the local calibration, the Pavement ME designs were verified by additional projects outside of the evaluation projects’ pool. Based on the results of this study, an implementation guideline document was prepared. The document contains all necessary design input information and calibration coefficients for DOTD to use the latest MEPDG software on a day to day basis for design and analysis of new and rehabilitated pavement structures in Louisiana."--Technical report documentation page.

Since that time, considerable efforts to calibrate the program and its performance prediction models for local conditions have taken place in multiple states attempting to implement the program. Currently, Wyoming DOT is in the process of implementing the DARWIN-ME (the MEPDG in its most current form) on the interstate and the state highway systems. In order to compliment that effort, this study attempted to develop a set of calibration coefficients and localized traffic inputs that can be used on local paved roads. Wyoming is an energy rich state and has seen an increase in the amount of heavy truck traffic that its roadways encounter, thus requiring locally calibrated inputs for the DARWIN-ME. Predicted distresses using the DARWIN-ME were largely different from measured distresses on local paved roadways included in this study, particularly IRI, rutting, alligator cracking, transverse cracking, and longitudinal cracking. These distresses were measured on the local paved roads using Pathway Services Inc. and the surface imaging that it provided. Inputs for trial runs using the DARWIN-ME were determined through work with local county road maintenance superintendents, WYDOT, and previous research regarding climatic data in Wyoming. Localized traffic inputs were developed using Weigh-In Motion (WIM) data collected on non-interstate roadways across Wyoming. Once a significant error and bias were found between predicted and measured distresses, calibration coefficients for IRI, alligator cracking, rutting, and longitudinal cracking were altered to reduce bias and sum of squared errors. The final calibration coefficients settled on in this study reduced the sum of squared errors and bias significantly. A sensitivity analysis was also performed during this study to determine the effect of layer thicknesses on the prediction capabilities of the DARWIN-ME. The process followed in this study can be utilized by other local governments around the country to help them implement the DARWIN-ME.

However, after more than a decade since its publication, the number of agencies that have reported entirely adopting this design system is small. Among the many causes of this phenomenon, the poor predictive accuracy of the performance prediction models is considered the most crucial one. To improve the accuracy of performance predicted by the MEPDG, a preliminary calibration was first conducted for these models with data from the pavement management system (PMS) of Tennessee, and then employed various machine learning algorithms for further improvements. Also, an approach for estimating the modulus of existing asphalt pavement was proposed to enhance the reliability of rehabilitation analysis with the MEPDG. The transfer functions for alligator cracking and longitudinal cracking were validated and calibrated with data collected from the PMS of the state of Tennessee. The results of calibration efforts showed that after calibration, both the bias and variance of the prediction were significantly reduced. It was noted that although local calibration helped improve the accuracy of the transfer functions, the extent of improvement is limited. An observation of the performance models revealed that they were either inadequately formulated or too inflexible to capture sufficient information from the inputs. To further improve the predictive performance of the transfer functions in the MEPDG, several machine learning algorithms were employed including the gradient boosted model (GBM) for fatigue cracking, deep neural networks for rutting, and random forest for IRI. Using the determination of coefficient (R2) and root mean squared error (RMSE) as the measure of model performance, compared with the global transfer functions, the models developed achieved significantly better predictive performance. The results from the regularized regression model indicated that, compared with the model using deflection basins parameters (DBPs), the one without DBPs could still generate modulus prediction of reasonable accuracy. Rehabilitation analyses in the MEPDG with the estimated modulus also contributed to the improved accuracy in pavement performance prediction.

Book excerpt: The Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) method, currently known as Pavement ME, recommends using locally calibrated material characterization models developed from laboratory testing of local materials under specific environmental and traffic loading conditions. The Pavement ME design method offers a more realistic design procedure and reduces the uncertainty that arise from empirical design procedures. This thesis developed a locally calibrated indirect tensile (IDT) strength material model for low temperature cracking predictions of hot mix asphalt (HMA) in Manitoba, Canada. In addition, the research investigated the integration of locally calibrated HMA, and unbound granular material characterization models into the Pavement ME framework to improve the design of flexible pavements. Laboratory IDT testing was conducted on typical HMA mixtures containing extracted binders and varying percentages of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). The laboratory measured IDT strengths were used to calibrate a local IDT strength predictive model for Manitoba. The predictions from the local Manitoba model were compared to the predictions from the global Pavement ME IDT model, and a Michigan calibrated IDT model, using a statistical analysis. It was found that the global Pavement ME IDT strength model, if used without local calibration, produced inaccurate predictions of the IDT strength for Manitoba mixtures. It was also found that binder characterization methods in Level 2 and Level 3 can significantly impact the accuracy of IDT strength predictions. A case study using developed local HMA, base, and subgrade material characterization models in Manitoba were compared to designs using default (Level 3) material input values in Pavement ME design software. The results of integrating the locally calibrated models for HMA, base and subgrade layers demonstrated that the locally calibrated materials model inputs produce lower pavement structural thicknesses with higher reliability in the predicted distresses when compared to the default materials inputs. The effect of using calibrated material inputs was more pronounced for higher traffic loadings. The results of the study demonstrate that the use of calibrated models can potentially produce optimized pavement thicknesses due to improved pavement designs.
