Book excerpt: Wireless power transmission is a technique that converts energy from radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic (EM) waves into DC voltage, which has been used here for the purpose of providing a power supply to bio-implantable batteryless sensors. The main constraints of the design are to achieve the minimum power required by the application, by still keeping the implant size small enough for the living subject's body. Resonance-based inductive coupling is a method being actively researched for the use in this type of power transmission, which uses two pairs of inductor coils in the external and implant circuits. In this work, we have employed the resonance-based inductive coupling technique in order to develop a design and optimization procedure for the inductors. We have designed two systems with different configurations, and have achieved power transfer efficiencies of around 80% at a coil distance of 50mm for both systems. We have also optimized the power delivered to the load (implant) and developed a power harvesting unit. Misalignment issues due to the subject's movements have been modeled for calculating the worst-case alignment, and finite element modeling of the inductors has been performed.

This biotelemetry link has many requirements such as data bandwidth and power consumption. Designing an appropriate link that meets these requirements is one of the most significant engineering challenges associated with these implants. Communications methods that are currently used for this link include standard Radio Frequency (RF) approaches, inductively coupled approaches, and load modulation approaches. This thesis describes the development of a unique capacitance-based biotelemetry system for implantable applications. This system consists of two distinct parts: the implanted transmitter and the external body-mounted receiver. The prototype transmitter is based on a custom Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) fabricated using the AMI 1.5[mu] [micron] process. This ASIC encodes and transmits predetermined data packets by driving two electrodes in a slew-controlled manner, all contained within a biocompatible material. The receiver consists of charge-sensitive amplifier front end using a discriminator to distinguish individual bits. A Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) decodes the transmitted data and relays it to a PCbased LabVIEW interface. Test results using a saline-based human tissue model are presented.

Few people have studied the problem of transcutaneous data transmission at the rates required by NASA's Life Sciences-Advanced BioTelemetry System (LS-ABTS). Implanted telemetry eliminate the problems associated with wire breaking the skin, and permits experiments with awake and unrestrained subjects. Our goal is to build a low-power 174-216MHz Radio Frequency (RF) transmitter suitable for short range biosensor and implantable use. The BioLink Implantable Telemetry System (BITS) is composed of three major units: an Analog Data Module (ADM), a Telemetry Transmitter Module (TTM), and a Command Receiver Module (CRM). BioLink incorporates novel low-power techniques to implement a monolithic digital RF transmitter operating at 100kbps, using quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation in the 174-216MHz ISM band. As the ADM will be specific for each application, we focused on solving the problems associated with a monolithic implementation of the TTM and CRM, and this is the emphasis of this report. A system architecture based on a Frequency-Locked Loop (FLL) Frequency Synthesizer is presented, and a novel differential frequency that eliminates the need for a frequency divider is also shown. A self sizing phase modulation scheme suitable for low power implementation was also developed. A full system-level simulation of the FLL was performed and loop filter parameters were determined. The implantable antenna has been designed, simulated and constructed. An implant package compatible with the ABTS requirements is also being proposed. Extensive work performed at 200MHz in 0.5um complementary metal oxide semiconductors (CMOS) showed the feasibility of integrating the RF transmitter circuits in a single chip.
