Dans ce contexte, on a besoin de comprendre les impacts du changement climatique et les effets possibles des mesures d'adaptation. En Mésoamérique, l'eau et la préservation de la biodiversité sont deux thèmes majeurs des politiques. Ce travail présente une évaluation des impacts du changement climatique sur les écosystèmes et leurs services hydrologiques, ainsi qu'une évaluation de l'efficacité comme mesure d'adaptation des écosystèmes, d'un réseau régional de corridors et d'aires protégées. Les impacts ont été évalué avec le calibrage, la validation et l'utilisation d'un modèle de transferts sols-végétation-atmosphère. Le modèle a été calibré puis il a été utilisé pour simuler des changements de végétation et d'hydrologie selon scénarios climatiques futurs. Nos résultats montrent une diminution générale du ruissellement et du LAI. Des tendances mixtes ont été trouvées pour l ́evapotranspiration. L'évaluation des réseaux des aires de protection recourt à un modèle des automates cellulaires pour la dispersion des espèces selon scénarios climatiques et politiques de préservation environnementale. Nous trouvons que les changements de climat sont trop rapides pour les espèces à dispersion lente et que les corridors de biodiversité les plus utilisés pour la dispersion sont les plus étendus en superficie et ceux qui prolongent les aires protégées avec un gradient altitudinal. Nos résultats marquent les premières travaux pour la Mésoamérique sur les impacts du changement climatique et une évaluation des politiques de conservation.

It is based on a survey of more than 9,000 farmers in 11 countries: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Niger, Senegal, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The study uses a Ricardian cross-sectional approach in which net revenue is regressed on climate, water flow, soil, and economic variables. The results show that net revenues fall as precipitation falls or as temperatures warm across all the surveyed farms. In addition to examining all farms together, the study examined dryland and irrigated farms separately. Dryland farms are especially climate sensitive. Irrigated farms have a positive immediate response to warming because they are located in relatively cool parts of Africa. The study also examined some simple climate scenarios to see how Africa would respond to climate change. These uniform scenarios assume that only one aspect of climate changes and the change is uniform across all of Africa. In addition, the study examined three climate change scenarios from Atmospheric Oceanic General Circulation Models. These scenarios predicted changes in climate in each country over time. Not all countries are equally vulnerable to climate change. First, the climate scenarios predict different temperature and precipitation changes in each country. Second, it is also important whether a country is already hot and dry. Third, the extent to which farms are irrigated is also important.

Book excerpt: In view of the massive change in the area of distribution of many world biota across classical biogeographical realms, and of the drastic restructuring of the biotic components of numerous ecosystems, the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE) decided at its general Assembly in Ottawa, Canada, in 1982 to launch a project on the 'Ecology of Biological Invasions'. Several regional meetings were subsequently organized within the framework of SCOPE, in order to single out the peculiarities of the invasions that took place in each region, the behaviour of their invasive species and the invasibility of their ecosystems. Most noteworthy among such workshops were one in Australia in August 1984, one concerning North America and Hawaii in October 1984, and one dealing with southern Africa in November 1985. A leitmotiv of these workshops was that most of the invasive species to those regions were emanating from Europe and the Mediterranean Basin, inadvertently or intentionally introduced by man. It was therefore considered as a timely endeavour to organize the next regional meeting in relation to this region. The workshop on 'Biological Invasions in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin' was held in Montpellier, France, 21 to 23 May 1986, thanks to the financial support of SCOPE and of the A.W. Mellon Foundation, and the logistic facilities of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (C.N .R.S.).
