Book excerpt: Because fragments from in-flight engine failures can damage critical aircraft components and produce catastrophic consequences, the Federal Aviation Administration is sponsoring research to mitigate the effects of uncontained engine bursts. SRI International is evaluating the ballistic effectiveness of fabric structures made from advanced polymers and developing a computational ability to design fragment barriers. In this reporting period, SRI solved several numerical problems associated with modeling the crimped geometry and interaction of woven yarns. When an orthotropic model is invoked and direction-dependent yarn properties specified, the yarn, as it is loaded, exhibits no appreciable stiffness until it straightens. The model behaved properly in simple simulations of single yarn response to axial and transverse loads. Laboratory and field site tests were performed to provide data for developing and validating the computational model. The ballistic response of fabrics to fragment impact was evaluated; the phenomenology of fabric deformation and failure was elucidated in quasi-static penetration tests; and the tensile properties of yarns and fibers were measured. Three high-strength polymer materials were examined: PBO (Zylon), aramid (Kevlar), and polyethylene (Spectra). Future work will include verification of the microstructural fabric model by implementing it into the DYNA3D code, simulating the static and dynamic penetration tests, and comparing the results. The material properties most important in resisting penetration will be identified and the effects of boundary conditions investigated. SRI will also perform fragment impact tests to generate data on boundary condition effects, measure yarn-on-yarn friction, and participate in full-scale fragment barrier tests at the Navy Air Warfare Center.

Book excerpt: This report documents the results of testing conducted in July and August 2001 at the Naval Air Warfare Center-Weapons Division, China Lake, CA, as part of the continued effort to characterize uncontained engine events. This effort was performed in support of the Federal Aviation Administration Aircraft Catastrophic Failure Prevention Program. Data generated from this test will support the penetration equation development for the Uncontained Engine Debris Damage Analysis Model (UEDDAM), a developmental design tool for conducting aircraft safety analysis for engine rotor burst events. This testing investigated composite materials and metals for use in component shielding applications. Previous testing had focused on aircraft skins and structural components. Four materials were investigated during this series of testing: 2024-T351 aluminum, Ti-6Al-4V titanium, Inconel(Trade Name) 625 low-cycle fatigue, and a generalized composite. Impact data from these materials was used to characterize the ballistic response via a material constant within the penetration equations. This material property was previously denoted as the dynamic shear modulus. Examination of the ballistic limit equation used within the UEDDAM has determined that the material constant is more appropriately a shear constant.

Book excerpt: One of the difficulties with developing and verifying accurate impact models is that parameters such as high strain rate material properties, failure modes, static properties, and impact test measurements are often obtained from a variety of different sources using different materials, with little control over consistency among the different sources. In addition there is often a lack of quantitative measurements in impact tests to which the models can be compared. To alleviate some of these problems, a project is underway to develop a consistent set of material property, impact test data and failure analysis for a variety of aircraft materials that can be used to develop improved impact failure and deformation models. This project is jointly funded by the NASA Glenn Research Center and the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center. Unique features of this set of data are that all material property data and impact test data are obtained using identical material, the test methods and procedures are extensively documented and all of the raw data is available. Four parallel efforts are currently underway: Measurement of material deformation and failure response over a wide range of strain rates and temperatures and failure analysis of material property specimens and impact test articles conducted by The Ohio State University; development of improved numerical modeling techniques for deformation and failure conducted by The George Washington University; impact testing of flat panels and substructures conducted by NASA Glenn Research Center. This report describes impact testing which has been done on aluminum (Al) 2024 and titanium (Ti) 6Al-4vanadium (V) sheet and plate samples of different thicknesses and with different types of projectiles, one a regular cylinder and one with a more complex geometry incorporating features representative of a jet engine fan blade. Data from this testing will be used in validating material models developed under this program. Book excerpt: The aim of this research is to develop a methodology which can be utilized to certify an aircraft for tire debris impact onto structural components and also to predict structural response by numerical simulation. After the aircraft experiences a tire burst scenario, tire debris projected from the rotating tire can impact the structural components of the aircraft. European Aviation Safety Agency's notice of proposed amendments (CS 25.734) demonstrated that the structural components and systems which are essential to the safe operation of aircraft should be protected from the damaging effects of tire debris. In this study, a computational methodology is developed to model and analyze the effects of tire debris impact on aircraft structural components. Experimental data from the tire fragment impact test on to the aluminum plate is compared with the numerical data to validate the tire debris model developed in this study. Parametric study is then conducted on validated tire debris model by impacting it onto the aircraft inboard flap. Inboard flaps are one of the major structural parts which are located in the zone of vulnerability defined by European Aviation Safety Agency and Federal Aviation Administration. Structural deformations and energy analysis on inboard flap by impacting tire debris model at two locations for different angle of attack and varying impact velocities are to be considered for this study. Detailed geometry of the inboard flap for the aircraft and tire debris are modeled in Catia V5 R21. Finite element modeling and fastener connections are defined in Altair Hypermesh 12.0. Material properties and boundary conditions are defined in LS-Prepost 4.2. This study provides a computational methodology to certify aircraft as per certification standards. This methodology provides design engineers the effects of tire debris impact on a structural component and also to change initial design requirements for structural components.
