The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the teacher perceptions and experiences of teachers who participated in a one-to-one laptop program at the high school level. The study was framed through the construct of self-efficacy by Bandura and constructivist theory by Dewey.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of one-to-one technology use on students and faculty compared to traditional use of technology. The researcher employed a quantitative study that utilized a quasi-experimental design to investigate the technology effect using survey instruments. Participants included in this study were from schools located in Northwest Arkansas. There were approximately 2,640 students across seven middle schools as well as 63 staff members in the same schools. The results of this study found that while the I3 schools did perform better than their counterparts, the differences were not statistically significant. However, the faculty predominantly supported the use of technology and indicated that technology is beneficial for student learning, instruction, and education overall. The study also found that there was common perception between faculty that the use of technology is needed for students to be not only able to perform tasks in classrooms but also necessary to compete in a changing workforce. Further, the result indicated that out of several independent variables, the only variable found to be a significant predictor of students’ proficient ACT Aspire test scores in all subjects was their grade level. Additionally, the results of this study found that there was a strong, positive correlation between teachers’ use of technology and their perceptions regarding students’ learning. Finally, these results of this study found that students' scores in all subjects were different based on their cohort more than the method of technology use. The scientific implications of these findings in the light of the literature review are also discussed.

As a school experiencing rapid change, Cougar Elementary received help from the business community to design and implement a technology program to enhance the active participation of students academically uninvolved and to serve as a marketing strategy for the school. A specialized laptop program was developed in a wireless environment with a one-to-one student to computer ratio, software available through the Internet by a local application service provider, and with routine technical and ongoing training for teachers and students in the fourth and fifth grades. Selected as subjects were 306 fourth and fifth grade students from three different school years. Case study methodology included the collection and analyses of data from teacher surveys, student surveys, student interviews, classroom observations, and results from the North Carolina End-of-Grade test. Prompted by the conflicting reports regarding the effectiveness of technology in the classroom and the impact on student achievement, the issues of routine accessibility to technology for teachers and students and the need for ongoing teacher training and support were investigated. Recommendations for further study are provided.

Through the use of surveys and interviews, perceptual data was gathered from 72 teachers and 11 administrators located in three southeastern Pennsylvania school districts that have adopted a district-wide one-to-one technology implementation. The findings supported by the research uncovered that the majority of administrators and teachers believed that the purpose of implementing a one-to-one technology initiative was to personalize learning and improve students' creativity through increased collaboration. The personalization of learning was not meant to improve achievement scores but instead meet each student's needs and create more opportunities to learn. Personalizing learning was believed by administrators to be a transformational shift in teachers' pedagogy. However, the majority of teachers believed that although there were clear benefits of the technology, it had not necessarily transformed their pedagogy. The teachers in this study also clearly identified that the professional development to support the one-to-one technology implementation needed to have a focus on a vision, be personalized, and allow for colleague collaboration right from the beginning. Administrator data showed that even though they understood the value of personalizing professional development, they believed there was a benefit in an initial whole group format. This study's findings will provide research based strategies to assist the success of new and established one-to-one technology implementations.

The results of the study found a statistically significant decrease in achievement in the areas of Math and English, for all students, including those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. The significant decrease in overall achievement in Math was double that of English. The implications of the results include the necessity for further evaluation of the role devices play in a student's education. Additionally, the results also suggested that when that role is clear, there is a need for additional training and support for both teachers and students regarding the use of devices in education. Moving forward, future research is warranted on the use of devices in education. Future research should be expanded to include other academic areas as well as levels to determine if devices are beneficial for student achievement at all.
