Book Synopsis Salinity in the Northern Segment of the Brazos River Alluvium Aquifer by : Erin P. Noonan
Download or read book Salinity in the Northern Segment of the Brazos River Alluvium Aquifer written by Erin P. Noonan and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brazos River Alluvium Aquifer is a minor aquifer in central and east Texas under water table conditions. It is an underutilized resource and may be considered a supplemental water source. However, variability in salinity occurs throughout the Brazos River Alluvium Aquifer and the source of this variability is unclear. The objective of this study is to characterize the variability of salinity in the northern segment of the Brazos River Alluvium Aquifer and evaluate potential sources of elevated salinity. Three potential sources of elevated salinity were evaluated: Interactions between the aquifer and the river, concentration from irrigation, and brine contamination from historic oil and gas fields. Based on the ionic and isotopic composition of aquifer and river samples, in-situ water samples, core descriptions, batch leaching of sediment, and hydrographs, the Brazos River and historic oil and gas fields do not appear to be the source of elevated salinity for the aquifer; although, irrigation could impact aquifer salinity.

Book Synopsis Alternative Groundwater Resources in North-central Texas for the Development of the Barnett Shale Gas Play by : Edward R. McGlynn

This book was released on 2012 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Texas water resources are under pressure due to population growth expected in the coming decades, increasing industrial demands, and frequent periods of drought. With this increasing demand for limited water resources it is important to explore alternative water sources within the State. One of those resources that can be developed is the many small aquifers which have never been well-characterized but could be an alternative source of fresh and brackish water for agriculture, municipal, and industrial applications. The natural gas industry's demand for water is growing in Texas as new drilling techniques such a hydraulic fracturing have opened new reserves previously considered economically non-viable. The development of smaller aquifers containing brackish water is a viable alternative to the gas industry's current reliance on fresh (potable) groundwater resources. The aquifer sections containing brackish water need to be mapped and characterized so they can be developed as an alternative water resource by the gas industry. The Barnett Shale in North-central Texas is one of the first major gas plays in the United States to use the technique of hydraulic fracturing in field development. This technique requires large quantities of water to create the required hydraulic pressure down the gas well to fracture the normally low permeability shale. A typical horizontal well completion consumes approximately 3.0 to 3.5 million gallons (11,400 to 13,200 m3) of fresh water. Projections of future groundwater demand for the Barnett Shale gas play total 417,000 AF (5.1x108 m3), an annual average of 22,000 AF (2.7x107 m3) over the expected 2007-2025 development phase. This level of water demand has the gas industry and groundwater managers exploring alternative sources of water for future development of the Barnett Shale. One alternative source of water for the expanding footprint of the Barnett Shale gas play are the smaller local Paleozoic aquifers on the western edge of the play. These small aquifers are underutilized and contain waters with higher levels of TDS. These levels are, however, acceptable to the drilling industry. In order to characterize theses aquifers, TWDB databases were utilized to analyze water chemistry and well productivity.

Book Synopsis Source Identification of Groundwater Salinization Within a Localized Aquifer System in Texas by : Tara L Urbanski
Download or read book Source Identification of Groundwater Salinization Within a Localized Aquifer System in Texas written by Tara L Urbanski and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates an abrupt groundwater salinization event in a localized aquifer system in North Central Texas. Salinization increases observed in this system are potentially related to petroleum production, agriculture/livestock activity or interaction with deeper groundwater. Analysis of hydrogeochemical data revealed unusual Ca-Mg-Cl waters with little HCO 3- or Na+ . Cl- proportion correlated directly with TDS. Leaching of soil samples revealed direct correlation between soils-derived-TDS and distance from nearest oil well. Resistivity measurements identified a shallow high-conductivity zone extending down-gradient from the well. Indications of conductive material were observed in the near surface (0-10m) in the 2D resistivity profile. Low NO 3- levels indicated that agriculture and livestock contributions to salinization are unlikely. Minimal SO42- and low Na+ /Cl- ratios suggest little contribution from evaporites. High TDS and low Na+ /Cl- ratios infer petroleum production activities as the likely contributor to groundwater quality reduction at this site. Whether these fluids arise from the oil production interval or from intervening brackish aquifers is still unknown.

Book Synopsis The Shale Dilemma by : Shanti Gamper-Rabindran
Download or read book The Shale Dilemma written by Shanti Gamper-Rabindran and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US shale boom and efforts by other countries to exploit their shale resources could reshape energy and environmental landscapes across the world. But how might those landscapes change? Will countries with significant physical reserves try to exploit them? Will they protect or harm local communities and the global climate? Will the benefits be shared or retained by powerful interests? And how will these decisions be made? The Shale Dilemma brings together experts working at the forefront of shale gas issues on four continents to explain how countries reach their decisions on shale development. Using a common analytical framework, the authors identify both local factors and transnational patterns in the decision-making process. Eight case studies reveal the trade-offs each country makes as it decides whether to pursue, delay, or block development. Those outcomes in turn reflect the nature of a country's political process and the power of interest groups on both sides of the issue. The contributors also ask whether the economic arguments made by the shale industry and its government supporters have overshadowed the concerns of local communities for information on the effects of shale operations, and for tax policies and regulations to ensure broad-based economic development and environmental protection. As an informative and even-handed account, The Shale Dilemma recommends practical steps to help countries reach better, more transparent, and more far-sighted decisions.
Book Synopsis Management and Effects of Coalbed Methane Produced Water in the Western United States by : National Research Council
Download or read book Management and Effects of Coalbed Methane Produced Water in the Western United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-10-15 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In some coalbeds, naturally occurring water pressure holds methane-the main component of natural gas-fixed to coal surfaces and within the coal. In a coalbed methane (CBM) well, pumping water from the coalbeds lowers this pressure, facilitating the release of methane from the coal for extraction and use as an energy source. Water pumped from coalbeds during this process-CBM 'produced water'-is managed through some combination of treatment, disposal, storage, or use, subject to compliance with federal and state regulations. CBM produced water management can be challenging for regulatory agencies, CBM well operators, water treatment companies, policy makers, landowners, and the public because of differences in the quality and quantity of produced water; available infrastructure; costs to treat, store, and transport produced water; and states' legal consideration of water and produced water. Some states consider produced water as waste, whereas others consider it a beneficial byproduct of methane production. Thus, although current technologies allow CBM produced water to be treated to any desired water quality, the majority of CBM produced water is presently being disposed of at least cost rather than put to beneficial use. This book specifically examines the Powder River, San Juan, Raton, Piceance, and Uinta CBM basins in the states of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. The conclusions and recommendations identify gaps in data and information, potential beneficial uses of CBM produced water and associated costs, and challenges in the existing regulatory framework.
