Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: One of the most common foliar diseases of soybeans in Ohio is Septoria brown spot, caused by Septoria glycines Hemmi. The economic impact caused by Septoria brown spot has not been documented in this State, but the disease has been developing earlier in the season. In contrast, during 2006 frogeye leaf spot caused on average 35% yield loss across 500,000 acres in Ohio. While frogeye leaf spot, caused by Cercospora sojina Hara, is common in the southern U.S., no documented losses have occurred previously in Ohio. In the last three years there has been a strong pressure by industry to increase fungicide applications for a perceived "plant health" benefit. Therefore, the objectives of this study were i) to determine the yield losses associated with S. glycines on soybean, and ii) to determine the cause(s) of the increase in prevalence of C. sojina in Ohio. The yield loss associated with S. glycines was determined with two approaches: weekly applications of chlorothalonil and timed applications of pyraclostrobin, tebuconazole, and flutriafol. Both of these approaches allowed for different levels of Septoria brown spot to develop. The ability of C. sojina to overwinter and the prevalence of seed transmission were both evaluated to determine what was the source of primary inoculum. In addition, a collection of C. sojina isolates from Ohio was compared to isolates from the southern U.S. to determine if there was a shift in temperature growth curves which would have favor infections of C. sojina during the growing season in the northern U.S. This same isolate collection was also used to determine if the Rcs3 gene was effective against Ohio's C. sojina population. From this three-year study it was concluded that brown spot in Ohio does contribute to reductions in yield, albeit at 196 to 293 kg/ha. Strobilurin fungicides alone or in combination with a triazole, reduced the severity of brown spot, but did not maintain the yield potential of plants grown under conditions of water stress. However, this family of fungicides may increase soybean yields under certain conditions. In addition, it is important to consider the net return in order to determine if producers have a real benefit or only an extra expense. The use of a highly susceptible cultivar widely planted during 2006, and warmer winter temperatures were both the cause of the increase in prevalence of C. sojina during the previous two years in Ohio. If winter indices continue to increase, then these conditions will enhance survival of this and other plant pathogens that did not previously overwinter at these latitudes.

The impact of mid-season management for foliar diseases and insect feeding on grain yield was studied in a series of field experiments. The first objective was to evaluate the effect of mid-season foliar fungicide and insecticide application on soybean yield, applied alone or in combination. A trial was established at 12 on-farm field site-years in Ohio during 2015 and 2016 in a randomized complete block design with four replications per treatment. Fungicide and insecticide treatments included: 1) nontreated control, 2) fungicide alone, 3) insecticide alone, 4) fungicide plus insecticide (tank-mixed), 5) fungicide and insecticide (separate tank), 6) fungicide plus crop oil, 7) insecticide plus crop oil, 8) fungicide, insecticide plus crop oil (tank-mixed). All treatments were applied at R3 growth stage (initial pod development), and data on the percent leaf area affected by foliar diseases and insect defoliation was collected. There was no significant yield response associated with insecticide application due to low insect pressure and low insect defoliation levels at the time of insecticide application at all 12 site-years. Though increased phosphorus and potassium levels have the potential to enhance crop productivity and profitability, secondary effects on pathogens may prove detrimental to overall plant health. Fertility recommendations serve to define optimum levels and require periodic revision to balance nutrient demands of modern cultivars and economic yield response with the associated increases in production costs, environmental considerations, and potential disease development. Fertility recommendations for soybean in the Tri-State area of Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana have not been updated in over 20 years, despite dramatic yield increases and other changes in the industry. As part of a larger collaboration working to re-evaluate current recommendations, this study assessed the effects of higher than recommended rates of phosphorus and potassium on seedling disease and sudden death syndrome disease (SDS) development in soybean through both field and greenhouse trials. Treatments above the recommended rates in the form of 112 kg/ha diammonium phosphate (DAP), 112 kg/ha potash, 112 kg/ha DAP and 112 kg/ha potash, and a nontreated control were applied to 5 field sites with seedling disease history and no differences in stand nor yield occurred. However, a significantly higher number of plants affected by damping-off was observed in plots treated with potassium than the other treatments at one location (p= 0.041). Furthermore, a trend occurred in two intensively surveyed fields in that higher than recommended rates of phosphorus, potassium, and phosphorus plus potassium seemed to increase the number of oomycetes, as more isolates were recovered from plots that had been treated with fertilizer than the nontreated control. More than 15 different oomycete species were recovered from both fields. In greenhouse assays, lower root weights occurred in plants which received fertilizer in 2 of 3 greenhouse trials. When the same treatments were applied to field soils naturally infested with Fusarium virguliforme, the addition of phosphorus and potassium applied separately significantly reduced SDS disease index at one of two locations (p= 0.052). The significant difference detected at this site may be due to lower baseline potassium levels and higher soybean cyst nematode (SCN) counts. Furthermore, in the presence of SCN and SDS, phosphorus and phosphorus plus potassium applied at levels higher than currently recommended enhanced yields, suggesting these additions may decrease disease pressure or compensate for the biotic stress. Clear trends were not observed in greenhouse trials with SDS infested soil amended with any of the fertility treatments. These trends are worth further investigation in continued field trials and greenhouse trials modified to use inoculated soil with fertility applied incrementally under consistent conditions. Future field studies which examine the effects of higher fertility on SDS should prioritize fields with low base levels of potassium and high SCN counts, as preliminary work suggests applying phosphorus and potassium at rates higher than currently recommended may enhance yield under these conditions.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Ohio ranks 9th among leading U.S. corn-producing states in total grain corn acreage. The corn crop adds an estimated $3 billion to Ohio's economy each year. Since the 1980s and 1990s when gray leaf spot, caused by Cercospora zeae-maydis, provoked widespread yield and economic losses in Ohio, foliar diseases have only been a concern in localized areas of the state. In most years, producers effectively manage foliar diseases by practicing some form of crop residue management, rotating corn with soybean, and planting resistant hybrids. However, without a major corn disease epidemic in more than a decade, the focus has shifted away from production practices geared to minimized disease-related losses. Since 2006, growers across the Corn Belt have been investing heavily in fungicide application. This is due in part to recent corn prices and the potential for greater disease development in a continuous-corn conservation-tillage cropping system, but most importantly, to industry claims of substantial yield increases due to the use of foliar fungicide, particularly the Quinone Outside Inhibitors (QoI). In Ohio, more than 650,000 hectares acres of corn were sprayed with fungicide during 2007. At an estimated application cost of $57 per hectare, this represented a total expenditure on fungicide of $37 M. Based on grain prices in that year, it would have required an estimated 375-501 kg/ha increase in yield to offset the cost of fungicide application. Results from university-based replicated trials suggest that the effect of fungicide application on yield is less clear-cut than industry data seem to suggest. In some university trials, positive yield responses were associated with disease control, in others there were no yield benefits even when diseases were controlled, yet in other trials positive yield responses were observed in the absence of high disease pressure. Since production practices have changed substantially since the available disease management recommendations were developed, there is a need to revisit these recommendations and develop sustainable management guidelines suitable for current production systems. Hence the objectives of the research presented in this thesis were to: investigate the effects of hybrid gray leaf spot resistance and yield potential, and fungicide application (product and timing) on the development of gray leaf spot and grain yield and yield components in a minimum-till/continuous-corn and a corn-soybean rotation cropping systems.
