Book excerpt: The present book is an addition to the ethnographic studies made by the scholars on Indian tribes since the pre-independence days. This book envisages a holistic study of the Bhils, a major tribe, inhabiting in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra. The Bhils are supposed to be inhabiting this part of the country from ancient time and their interaction with Rajputs in medieval time is well known. The Bhils of Madhya Pradesh have little contact with outside population and as such they have preserved their culture and tradition over the centuries. In this work detailed account of the cultural history of the Bhils have been recorded on the basis of actual field-work done by the author. Here an attempt has been made to understand the life-cycle of the Bhils through their economic activities, material way of life, social organisation, world view and religion in their very natural environment. This book also gives some idea about the impact of the nature in shaping the culture of the Bhils.

Book Synopsis Education and Polity in Nepal by : Dharam Vir
Download or read book Education and Polity in Nepal written by Dharam Vir and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 1988 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The educational process appears to be a dialectical process being the centre of generation of new knowledge, ideas and innovations and, therefore, it has a tendency to reflect upon political processes. Intellectuals produced within its corridors generally raise the voice of dissent, not only against the establishment, but sometimes against the existing social structure itself. Thus the relationship between education and polity is not unidimensional but a two-way traffic. Unveil the patterns of interaction between the polity and education, the interplay between education and social stratification and the interaction between the education and the process of modernization. Nepal, the magnificent, snow-clad and ancient Himalayan kingdom, is the focus of the work. Review ``On the whole, the book provides a very good analytical and empirical insight into the development of higher education in Nepal, in the light of the socio-political factors. This book can be useful for a good reading for all those who are interested in the area of higher education''. Dr. Sneha Joshi, Review Projector, Vol. VIII, Nos. 10–12.

Book Synopsis The Modern Anthropology of India by : Peter Berger
Download or read book The Modern Anthropology of India written by Peter Berger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-03 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Modern Anthropology of India is an accessible textbook providing a critical overview of the ethnographic work done in India since 1947. It assesses the history of research in each region and serves as a practical and comprehensive guide to the main themes dealt with by ethnographers. It highlights key analytical concepts and paradigms that came to be of relevance in particular regions in the recent history of research in India, and which possibly gained a pan-Indian or even trans-Indian significance. Structured according to the states of the Indian union, contributors raise several key questions, including: What themes were ethnographers interested in? What are the significant ethnographic contributions? How are peoples, communities and cultural areas represented? How has the ethnographic research in the area developed? Filling a significant gap in the literature, the book is an invaluable resource to students and researchers in the field of Indian anthropology/ethnography, regional anthropology and postcolonial studies. It is also of interest to students of South Asian studies in general as it provides an extensive and critical overview of regionally based ethnographic activity undertaken in India.

Book Synopsis The City and the Country in Early India by : P. K. Basant
Download or read book The City and the Country in Early India written by P. K. Basant and published by Primus Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The City and the Country in Early India: A Study of Malwa is about the emergence of urban centres in the sixth century bce, and analyses the processes and spatiality of urbanization, taking Malwa as its case study. Earlier research on urbanism has focussed on either literary or archaeological sources. While literary sources tend to locate the agency for change exclusively in preachers and rulers, in archaeology, the forces of change become nameless and faceless. The study of inscriptions from Malwa helps in restoring agency to common people. The beginnings of urbanism are to be found in the pre-literate past, and, therefore, require an analysis of archaeological data. Using insights from anthropology and studies of early states, in the first half of the book an attempt has been made to look for new ways to account for urbanization. The second half of the book tries to understand the process of urbanization by examining epigraphic and literary sources. The process of the emergence of urban centres created new forms of division of space: urban centres were surrounded by villages which in turn were surrounded by wilderness. This book tries to recover the histories of their complex interrelations. Since caste and kinship are considered central to the world of Indian sociology, an attempt has also been made to understand the relationships between caste, kinship and urbanism. Changes in the attitude of the literati towards the city and the country have also been examined.

Download or read book Health, Medicine, and Nutrition of the Tribals written by Robin D. Tribhuwan and published by Discovery Publishing House. This book was released on 2004 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about primary health care in rural India, however research on primary health care in tribal India still needs attention. Tribals in India still continue to suffer from digestive, skin, respiratory and nutritional disorders. This is especially the case amongst women and children. The recent studies by the Tribal Research and Training Institute of Maharashtra. Pune, have demonstrated that malnutrition amongst tribal children below the age of five years is 92 per cent and as high as 70 per cent amongst tribal women. The problem of tribal health and nutrition is linked with social, economic and educational status of the tribals. This book presents issues of concern in tribal health, nutrition and medicine. It provides recommendations to resolve tribal health, nutrition and medicine issues. The book will be useful to students of anthropology, sociology, health sciences, social work, tribal and general readers. Contents: Tribal People in the Indian Context and the Bhils, Nature and Role of Ethnomedical Specialists, Changing Circumstances, Current Health Needs of the Bhils, Recommendations for the Future.
