Download or read book The Mollusca written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mollusca, Volume 5: Physiology, Part 2 focuses on the biochemistry and physiology of mollusks. The selection first elaborates on the feeding biology of gastropods and feeding and digestion in Bivalvia and cephalopods. Discussions focus on feeding, digestion, feeding and digestive rhythms, feeding behavior, ontogeny of gastropod feeding biology, and feeding mechanisms. The text then examines the circulatory systems of gastropods and bivalves and circulation in cephalopods, including blood vessels and extracellular space, chemical control of the circulation, fluid mechanics of the circulation, and nature and anatomy of the circulatory system. The text takes a look at ionic regulation and water balance, excretion, and molluscan immunobiology. Topics include internal defenses of gastropods, bivalves, cephalopods, and Polyplacophorans, Monoplacophora, Cephalopoda, and Scaphopoda. The selection is a vital reference for researchers interested in the biochemistry and physiology of mollusks.
Book Synopsis Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology by : Edwin Cooper
Download or read book Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology written by Edwin Cooper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fourth volume of Contemporary Topics In Immunobiology treats in vertebrate immunity. Specifically, the results represent several approaches to humoral and cellular immunity. It is evident that invertebrates do have function ing immune systems. For example, cellular immunity is characterized by both specificity and memory, but it is still problematical whether vertebrate immune capacity evolved directly from invertebrates. Most of the manuscripts were formally presented at the International Symposium on Invertebrate Pathology, University of Minnesota, August 1972, held in connection with the 25th anniversary celebration of the American Insti tute of Biological Sciences. I wish to express my appreciation to the contributors and to beg their indulgence in what may have been overzealous editing. This was done, though, in the interest of clarity and to seek uniformity. Because of earlier problems, time limitations did not permit consultations between submission of manuscripts and final editing. For assistance, I extend a special note of gratitude to Mrs. Lois Gehringer who unselfishly retyped many of the manuscripts. The preparation of this volume was aided partially by NSF Grant GB17767, two grants from The California Institute for Cancer Research, and a grant from The Brown-Hazen Corporation. E.L.C. Book Synopsis Invertebrate Immunity by : Karl Maramorosch
Download or read book Invertebrate Immunity written by Karl Maramorosch and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invertebrate Immunity: Mechanisms of Invertebrate Vector-Parasite Relations consists of chapters presented at a workshop on invertebrate defense mechanisms, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and held in Bethesda, Maryland, on April 17 and 18, 1974. Organized into four parts, having a total of 24 chapters, this book first discusses the barrier imposed by the gut of invertebrates to invading parasites. It then centers on the role of invertebrate hemocytes and other phagocytic cells in immunity, as well as the humoral defense mechanisms of these organisms. Other topics discussed include parasite encapsulation in insects, role of melanin in host-parasite interaction, and use of host hormones by insect parasites to make the host environment favorable for their growth and development. This book will be essential for those interested in comparative immunology and in invertebrate immune responses. It will be of special interest to entomologists, protozoologists, physicians, veterinarians, ecologists, pathologists, research workers, science teachers, and graduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1966 Congress passed the National Sea Grant College Program Act to promote marine research, education, and extension services in institutions along the nation's ocean and Great Lakes coasts. In Maryland a Sea Grant Program -- a partnership among federal and state governments, universities, and industries -- began in 1977, and in 1982 the University of Maryland was named the nation's seventeenth Sea Grant College. The Maryland Sea Grant College focuses its efforts on the Chesapeake Bay, with emphasis on the marine concerns of fisheries, seafood technology, and environmental quality. The first comprehensive review of the biology of the eastern oyster in more than thirty years. The twenty-one chapters synthesize every aspect of oyster biology -- for instance, general anatomy, physiology, the circulatory system, reproduction, genetics, diseases -- and issues related to management and aquaculture.
