Book excerpt: Excerpt from Immortality of Man From the Standpoint of Reason The truths most interesting to us, as human beings, are those of our past, - before our birth into this world, of our future after we leave it, and of our duty while in it. These are facts, for the answer to which the eager cry of the human race forever goes up. What is man? Whence came he? Whither goes he? In the hands of what power is he? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evidence of Immortality This essay is an examination from a scientific view point into the probability of the continued existence of' human life after the death of the body. Of course, by scientific is meant the light Of reason applied to the phe nomena of life - not a demonstration by means Of the microscope or balances. Perhaps philosophical would be a better word to use in describing its method, but as all true science is philosophical, and all true philosophy scientific, the writer is not disposed to insist too strongly upon the term used. It is believed that a careful analysis of undisputed phenomena of existence, which have been perhaps overlooked, or which have not been assigned their ptoper importance, will establish the truth of the persist ence of life beyond the grave as certainly as any other fact of existence. It will assuredly place it upon a much firmer basis than that enjoyed by many Of the accepted scientific hypotheses, such as those which attempt to prove the existence and functions of the ether, atoms, matter itself, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Man and the Attainment of Immortality That this period of stress and of fierce challenge should have been without its influence on that whole range of thought and activity that may be covered by the word Religion, was not to be expected. If some were persuaded by the very course of things that the world in which they found themselves was indeed God's world, there were many on the other hand whose contribution to the scrap-heaps of the war was religion, or what they deemed to be religion. In addition to the moral issues that were involved in the question of what kind of a world it could be in which such a cataclysm was possible, there was the circumstance that the whole conduct of the war was a matter of exact science in a degree which was true of no previous war in history. The mathematician won greater victories than the musketeer: the engineer had everywhere laid the basis of success If there were branches of science that were put under heavy contri bution in the saving and restoring of human life, there was no corner of the known that had not been ransacked for the wherewithal to destroy it. It was science ordered, tested, exact, organised knowledge - that was the sign in which men had conquered blessed be Science which gave us the victory! She it is that alone can guarantee certitude, and what goes counter to, or tran scends the limits of, her achievements, either of state ment or construction, may well be looked at askance. There is a realm of hard and fast fact, of things that can be known, and that with certainty, in a way to which there is nothing comparable in the whole field of religion. A life of faith all up in the air, so to speak, and un related to everything else that is known, is not a matter for serious consideration in an age of continuously menacing realism. Such have been, and are, the thoughts consciously and subconsciously at work in the minds of many to-day, and with ample reason. Nevertheless the fact remains that investigation of the long history of mankind has disclosed no period in which the most distinctive thing about him has not been his sense of Powers or a Power, expressing itself in the universe, with which he instinctively wished to come into some sort of a satisfactory relationship. There is in man a sense of need and dependence on something without him there is that in his being which goes out to something in the universe which he feels secures his place in it, and with which he desires to be at one. Challenged from the dawn of intelligence by the world order external to him, and impelled by his sense of need, he has committed himself to that world order in one way or another. As the initial acts of self-committal proved to be justified, man with his awakening mind made ever greater demands upon that order, and in turn began to feel its demands upon himself. 3'7man, that is to say, whether he likes it or not, is dis tinctively the religious creature. Man, constituted as he is, cannot help being religious, however different the expressions and form of the sense of the relation that religion represents. Thus the Bible did not make religion: rather did religion make the Bible, and the Koran and the Indian Vedas also, for that matter. The word Religion has had to cover an immense range of experience, from primitive man's tremulous response to lightning and thunder, or the feelings associated with the hesitant yet expectant sowing of his scant seed in the earth, up to conscious fellowship with Jesus Christ. Religion is a capacity and character - a higher awareness and responsiveness - that have developed with man's mental and spiritual progress, of which the growing revelation of God to man has been the converse side. In short, it is the last and highest expression of that elan vital that has characterised the whole history of life from the beginning - that reaching out towards a richer, completer, more harmonious life which was all uncon scious until it be...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Beyond Life: A Study of Immortality This little book on Immortality is frankly from the standpoint of a Chris tian believer, whose chief interest is in theology. But it has genuine sympathy and respect for the philosopher and the scientist who know not whether to look for an abiding city or to fold their hands for a final rest. These pages may pos sibly seem unfair to the exact attitude which distinguished philosophers and sci entists would maintain. But perhaps, should they look into them, they will forgive misrepresentation, because un intentional, and because to see truth whole is a task worth many blunders, if to attempt it may become a habit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Immortality: The Principal Philosophic Arguments for and Against It N the Immediate sense, this is writ ten responsive'ly to the urgent request of an agnostic friend. In a sense that is far from remote, it is written too for the benefit of all doubters. I should not im pose upon myself this task, if it did not seem reasonably certain to me that, when completed, it will be helpful to at least a few who have thought themselves out into hopelessness. Thls Is presumptious, I know, but I find justification in the facts first, that I know as much about the mat ter as any other man, and second, that my mode of presenting it may have peou liar advantages. It is my purpose to be perfectly fair in the treatment of this mighty problem. This will be easy for me, for, being an ag nostic myself, I shall be hampered by no doctrinal, nor partisan bias. Although I do not know immortality to be a fact, I feel that I know a great many nearly in contestable reasons why it should be a fact. In carrying out the wishes of my late beloved father, George Goldthwait Ingersoll, as declared by him in his last will and testament, I give and bequeath to Harvard University in Cam bridge, Mass., where my late father was graduated, and which he always held in love and honor, the sum of Five thousand dollars as a fund for the establishment of a Lectureship on a plan some what similar to that of the Dudleian lecture, that is - one lecture to be delivered each year, on any con venient day between the last day of May and the first day of December, on this subject, the Im mortality of Man, said lecture not to form a part of the usual college course, nor to be delivered by any Professor or Tutor as part of his usual routine Of instruction, though any such Professor or Tutor may be appointed to such service. The Choice of said lecturer is not to be limited to any one religious denomination, nor to any one profession, but may be that of either clergyman or layman, the appoint ment to take place at least Six months before the delivery of said lecture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of Life and Immortality: An Inquiry Into the Origin, Composition, and Destiny of Man The part containing the proofs and illustrations of immortality was written as a lecture more than twelve years ago. And although no subject of such deep and abiding interest has reached, or even approximated, the stage of final settlement, and though none has been more ably and earnestly discussed during these years than this, I have as yet seen no reason to change my views on any of the points here presented. It was my original purpose to leave the problem of God, or First Cause, as already settled affirmatively. Then I remembered that the sacred books of Jews, Brahmins, Christians, Mohammedans, are no longer of binding authority with the deepest thinkers. And it is bandied about among half-thinking materialists, that the argument from design is exploded, merely because Paley overdrew a little in some of his illustra tions from natural history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Immortality Triumphant: The Existence of a God and Human Immortality Philosophically Considered, and the Truth of Divine Revelation Substantiated The above fear great and interesting Subjects, that I have philosophically considered, embrace matter sufficient for at least four volumes of three hundred pages each, and hence I have been compelled to study condensation as well as brevity throughout, and in several instances to classify the materials of my subject in order to effect this end. Sensible of the solemnity and vast importance of my subject to man, and of the deep and thrilling interest that every reflecting mind must naturally feel in regard to its present happiness and future destiny, it should be read and understood by all. And as voluminous works are owned and read by comparatively but few individuals, not only on account of their price, but the discouraging thought of wading through an ocean of words, Often of extraneous matter, to' gain the desired information, so I have labored to obviate these objections, by presenting the great and important points of the subject in a small volume, which is offered as a cheap pocket companion to the Christian community.
