Book Synopsis Processes of Immigration in Rural Europe by : Stefan Kordel Igor Jelen
Download or read book Processes of Immigration in Rural Europe written by Stefan Kordel Igor Jelen and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary immigration processes, such as forced migration and labour-induced mobility, as well as lifestyle and leisure-oriented movements, increasingly affect areas in Europe that are considered as peripheral or rural. This edited collection sheds light on the diversity of in-migration, its specific implications for development and strategies for coping. Contributions from various sub-disciplines of the social sciences, including human and cultural geography, sociology and spatial planning with different regional foci, encourage theoretical discussions, enhancing empirical knowledge and providing stimuli for practitioners involved in migration and development issues. The structure of the volume therefore follows four main themes: (1) conceptual reflections on immigration to peripheral rural areas and development prospects; (2) patterns and types of immigration processes, drawing on various case studies from all over Europe; (3) realms of integration: namely, housing, economy and social life; (4) immigration management with a special emphasis on regional and local strategies, undertaken by policy-makers, the private sector and civil society.
Book Synopsis The History of Migration in Europe by : Francesca Fauri
Download or read book The History of Migration in Europe written by Francesca Fauri and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of Migration in Europe belies several myths by arguing, for example, that immobility has not been the "normal" condition of people before the modern era. Migration (far from being an income-maximizing choice taken by lone individuals) is often a household strategy, and local wages benefit from migration. This book shows how ssuccesses arise when governments liberalize and accompany the international movements of people with appropriate legislation, while failures take place when the legislation enacted is insufficient, belated or ill shaped. Part I of this book addresses mainly methodological issues. Past and present migration is basically defined as a cross-cultural movement; cultural boundaries need prolonged residence and active integrationist policies to allow cross-fertilization of cultures among migrants and non-migrants. Part II collects chapters that examine the role of public bodies with reference to migratory movements, depicting a series of successes and failures in the migration policies through examples drawn from the European Union or single countries. Part III deals with challenges immigrants face once they have settled in their new countries: Do immigrants seek "integration" in their host culture? Through which channels is such integration achieved, and what roles are played by citizenship and political participation? What is the "identity" of migrants and their children born in the host countries? This text's originality stems from the fact that it explains the complex nature of migratory movements by incorporating a variety of perspectives and using a multi-disciplinary approach, including economic, political and sociological contributions.
Book Synopsis The Europeanization of Citizenship by : Fiorella Dell'Olio
Download or read book The Europeanization of Citizenship written by Fiorella Dell'Olio and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The connection between immigration and citizenship in Europe is an increasingly important issue. This timely and informative book investigates three main aspects of the issue: the degree to which European citizenship encourages the development of a European identity; the impact of European citizenship at the nation-state level in Italy and the UK in regard to domestic policy-making in the areas of immigration and citizenship; and what is needed to make a supranational citizenship work in practice. Fiorella Dell'Olio examines changes in laws on citizenship, nationality, and immigration in Italy and the UK, and assesses the relationship between the political conceptualization of European citizenship and the public response as revealed by opinion polls. She argues that the establishment of a European citizenship has reinforced the ideology of nationality in both Italy and the UK and that it consequently has failed to forge a European identity.
